The goal is the thing you have to keep in mind. The goal is to have the number of THE Two posts (the number we see on page one of the open forums) be neatly connected with the original THE so we can still have clear benchmarks and so forth.
Think about it. If we had to add 4082 to the total of THE Two every time we wanted to calculate the REAL number of THE posts... well, among other things, dabobbada would never be able to keep up. And we can't have that.
So for example, without the placeholder adjustments, the 118th post on this thread would APPEAR to be #118 but in reality (the reality where the original THE is still part of THE and let's face it - we GOTTA cling to that kind of reality)... in reality it's 4082 + 118 or 4200. That person had a benchmark without even knowing it!
Adding the 82 placeholder posts is kind of like moving those 82 posts (#4001 through #4082) off the original THE thread and putting them here... as if we had made the transition at a nice even number (and if the evil Vishnu hadn't been so evil he would have thought of that and locked THE right at 4000).
So now... if you want to be the THE5K poster you just have to be the one that manages to get the 1000th post on this thread. If we hadn't straightened things out with placeholder posts then the THE5K poster would have been the person who got the 918th post on this thread. Neanderalgebra would never have measured up to such a difficult task and our Prophet would never get a benchmark again... (heck, as it is, the only one he did get was handed to him by Lifted Up the Philanthropist of THE).
Now... there is one part of this thing that just requires blind faith. Technically, you could argue that the 118th post on THE Two wasn't really post #4118 yet because the placeholder posts had NOT yet been made. But oh lord, do we really want to go there?
I like to think of the placeholder posts spiritually. Sort of like eternal life. I know it's coming, I know I already have what it takes to get it... but it just hasn't happened yet. I personally think that all benchmarks should be considered valid and worthy whether they come before or after the final Postus Placeholderus (B.PP. or A.PP.).
The only other choice would be ignoring all benchmarks and considering them null and void until I finish with all the placeholders... and dammit, I just don't want to work that hard... or fast. I have other things to do. This Priestess gig is starting to look more and more like a full-time job as it is (for example, Paw thinks I can just chauffeur him around in my purple car anytime he wants to go for a ride - the heck with that!).
Don'tcha think it would be better to just accept the reality of the Postus Placeholderus on blind faith, despite the fact that we see THE through a glass darkly until it's complete?
And besides, we gotta have a little something going on here for the obsessive-compulsives...
Speaking of Vine... anybody seen her?
