After many years THE desire came over me to return to my country, and stay with my mother and cheer her widowhood while she lived (for my father, as I had already heard, was dead), and then to sell THE little property and give part to THE poor, settle part on THE monasteries and (I blush to confess my faithlessness) keep some to spend in comforts for myself.

Malchus became a slave of THE Ishmaelites. They wanted him to marry a woman whose husband had been sold elsewhere. As Christians, they protested, then pretended and kept their chastity and virtue. They escaped, but left footprints in THE sand for their masters to follow. They hid in a cave but, alas! were found by a servant of their masters. Then, a lioness attacked THE servant, and they were delivered. Malchus returned to being a monk, and his companion entered a convent.
