When I was young, it seemed that life was so wonderful
A miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical
And all the birds in the trees, well they'd be singing so happily
Oh joyfully, playfully watching me

There are times when all the world's asleep
The questions run too deep
For such a simple man
Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned
I know it sounds absurd
Please tell me who I am

I said, watch what you say or they'll be calling you a radical
Liberal, oh fanatical, criminal
Won't you sign up your name, we'd like to feel you're acceptable
Respectable, oh presentable, a vegetable!

I'm working on the artist.  Is it Peter Frampton?

I think the title of the song is self-evident (unless I have the wrong title in mind.)

No it's not Frampton.  I think you may have the wrong title in mind (I think.)

So it's not "The Obvious Song" either?    I'm really off base, then.

That's not even close WordWolf however it is actually very close to the right answer.  In those three words "The Obvious Song"  two of them are in my clue.  Go figure.

I was beginning to think that I had been transported into another universe where no one remembered ever hearing of ~Supertramp~ or much less ever hearing of The Logical Song, The Long Way Home, Goodbye Stranger, or Breakfast in America, of my favorite Dreamer.  I'm so glad I wasn't sent into outer space.

Let' see, huh?   Here's one.

The roses in the window box
Have tilted to one side
Everything about this house
Was born to grow and die

Oh it doesn't seem a year ago
To this very day
You said I'm sorry honey
If I don't change the pace
I can't face another day

Now this one, I DON'T recognize.

George

Your going to need a hint George.  The songs been around, got lots of air play back in the day.

The song wasn't released as a single because it was 11 minutes long.  It did get played a lot of FM radio.  Hint:  It on the yellow brick road but not the one Judy Garland walked on.

Oops, sorry it took so long.

Song is Love Lies Bleeding from  ~EltonJohn's~  album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.  Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding together were the opening track but taking up to much time at over 11 minutes for the air waves, they received a lot of play on FM radio.  The song Funeral For A Friend is an instrumental arranged by Elton John wondering what type of music he would want at his funeral before a segue into Love Lies Bleeding.

Slipping and a sliding and playin' dominoes

Lefting and then Righting

It's not a crime you know

You gotta tell your story boy

before it's time to go

I was talkin' to the preacher

said God was on my side

Then I ran into the hangman,

he said it's time to die

You gotta telly your story boy,

you know the reason why

That's the whole song except for the chorus that includes the title of the song.  Waylon Jennings and Hank Williams Jr. have covered it if that's any help.
