Another song.

The festival was over, the boys were all plannin' for a fall
The cabaret was quiet except for the drillin' in the wall
The curfew had been lifted and the gamblin' wheel shut down
Anyone with any sense had already left town

He moved across the mirrored room, "Set it up for everyone, " he said
Then everyone commenced to do what they were doin' before he turned their heads
Then he walked up to a stranger and he asked him with a grin
"Could you kindly tell me, friend, what time the show begins?"

Backstage the girls were playing five card stud by the stairs
Lily had two queens she was hoping for a third to match her pair
Outside the streets were filling up, the window was open wide
A gentle breeze was blowing, you could feel it from inside
Lily called another bet

Big Jim was no one's fool, he owned the town's only diamond mine
He made his usual entrance looking so dandy and so fine
With his bodyguards and silver cane and every hair in place
He took whatever he wanted to and he laid it all to waste
But his bodyguards and silver cane

Lily was a princess she was fair-skinned and precious as a child

It's not Simple Twist of Fate or Tangled Up in Blue or even Shelter From the Storm but it's a song from ~Bob Dylan~ on the same album as those songs.  Blood on The Tracks.  1976.  I didn't expect anyone would get it.  I was more expecting a guess I guess at the artist.   Dylan's 76 birthday was May 24 and in honor of that day I have posted the video to Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts.  I love these ballets because his songs have more than just lyrics.  Dylan puts characters in the song and brings them to life in the story.   I can see Lily, Rosemary, the hanging Judge just sitting around the Cabaret waiting for the dealer to deliver the next card.

I posted another clue last week, oh I want to say Saturday, and somehow it didn't show up.  Well, well.  Let's try it again.

She looks in the mirror and stares at the wrinkles
That weren't there yesterday
And thinks of the young man that she almost married
What would he think if he saw her this way?

She picks up her apron in little girl-fashion
As something comes into her mind
Slowly starts dancing remembering her girlhood
And all of the boys she had waiting in line

Cut and print, that's a wrap!   This is a real oldie.

Glenn Yarbrough is a folk singer, same type of artist as the clue.  Bobby Goldsboro is another one.  But neither of them is the artist for this particular song.

*checks*  Glenn Yarbrough was a folk singer. Among his portfolio is the songs in the Rankin-Bass animated movie, "the Hobbit" (like "the Road Goes Ever On" and he did some songs for their animated "Return of the King."  ( You may recall the troubadour at the beginning. "Frodo of the nine fingers....and the ring of doom!")   For me, that's the best-known stuff he's done. And the stuff he's done I've heard most recently.

Well, Glenn is the wrong Glen as I said.  Just dropped it in there as a hint for you so you guys would get an idea of the genre and the kind of artist that the guy was.  He's really country, but he was considered a folk guy too as many artists were of the day.  It's ballet song, like Goldsboro's "Honey".

She looks in the mirror and stares at the wrinkles
That weren't there yesterday
And thinks of the young man that she almost married
What would he think if he saw her this way?

She picks up her apron in little girl-fashion
As something comes into her mind
Slowly starts dancing remembering her girlhood
And all of the boys she had waiting in line

The photograph album she takes from the closet
And slowly turns the page
And carefully picks up the crumbling flower
The first one he gave her now withered today
She closes her eyes and
Touches the house dress that suddenly disappears
And just for the moment she's wearing the gown

That broke all their minds back so many years
