MEMO
DATE: September 1997
TO: The Way Corps
FROM: Trunk Office/Bill
Greene
SUBJECT: Vision and
Direction
God bless you.
Rev. Martindale is very
excited for each of you to receive a copy of this document, which we are
calling "Vision and Direction." This vital document has been
developed over the course of the past several months with input from the Board
of Trustees and the U.S. Trunk Staff. In addition, it has been reviewed by and
has gained the full support of all the ministry leadership present at our
1997-98 Corps and Staff Placement meetings.
Rev. Martindale has consistently taught us the Biblical basis for planning,
scheduling, organizing, and implementing so that we can function as the most
brilliant ministers of the Lord Jesus Christ. Vision and Direction provides us
with a strong framework to more effectively move in the direction Rev.
Martindale has clearly set for us. This will result in increased growth and
productivity in the household at all levels.
You will want to study this document in detail and be especially knowledgeable
of the job description that applies to your assigned responsibility. We would
like for you to be ready to go into full operation with the guidelines of
Vision and Direction on October 6, 1997, after the fifty-fifth anniversary.
This means that the Limb coordinators will send their first Vision and
Direction Report to their Region coordinators by September 30, and the Region
coordinators will submit their first Vision and Direction Report to the Trunk Office
by October 5.
We anticipate great days ahead as we cross the bridge together into the
promised land of the prevailing Word.
Goal: The Prevailing Word in the Household and to the World
I. Vision and Direction. I
Timothy 3:1-7; Habakkuk 2:2; Proverbs 29:2-18.
The prevailing Word in the
household and to the world is each Region, Limb, and Branch implementing a
clear vision and action plan set by the Board of Trustees that will make the
Word of God and a clean household available where we have established household
fellowships.
The direction is to provide
a framework of accountability for all the Corps so there can be a godly
proportion, a just, spiritual equilibrium of work for them in each Limb. All
will have solid standards and goals to work toward, resulting in more
productivity in their work and growth in the household.
II. Expansion. Acts 11:21;
12:24; 16:5; 19:20.
Every Branch work that is
overseen by Way Corps which consists of 2 to 3 household fellowships or
approximately 15 to 30 faithful disciples will coordinate a minimum of I
Foundational Class and I Intermediate Class per year ' Each year a Branch of 2
to 3 household fellowships or approximately 15 to 30 disciples would reasonably
show an increase of I fellowship (8-10 disciples) per year.
Works of 4 to 6 household
fellowships or approximately 30 to 60 disciples will coordinate a minimum of 2
Foundational Classes and 2 Intermediate Classes a year. Works of 4 to 6
household fellowships or approximately 30 to 60 disciples would reasonably show
an increase of 2 fellowships (16 to 20 disciples) per year. Acts 6:7.
Financially, it is
reasonable and feasible for a Region to be operating at a minimum of 50% of its
total income with the additional 50% being returned to The Way International.
I Corinthians 8:14; I
Corinthians 9:9.
The total income revenue in
a Limb and Branch (including abundant sharing, class fees, bookstore sales, and
conferences) would reasonably show an increase of 20% a year. This would
indicate that new people are rising up to the level of abundant sharing and
that the faithful disciples are increasing their proportionate giving each
year. Also, The Way Corps would be motivating their disciples to buy and
utilize items in the bookstore for their spiritual growth. People would be
signing up for classes and special Limb weekends to further increase their
knowledge of the Word, Acts 4:33-35, 11 Corinthians 8:7.
III. Disciple and
Leadership Development. Colossians 1:26 to 2:3.
Each Limb and Branch should
inspire believers to be Way Disciples and to be Way Corps ministers each year.
(Eventually as we begin arriving at the goals for growth, recommended numbers
for each Limb could be calculated to aim for in each of these two categories.)
Each Region, Limb, and
Branch will set an action plan to inspire and train Advanced Class grads who
show the capabilities of living up to the standards of I Timothy 3:8-13 in
order to coordinate a Way household fellowship. (See "The Qualifications
and Training of Household Fellowship Coordinators.")
The Qualifications and Training of Household Fellowship
Coordinators
These guidelines
will be a checklist that will help to evaluate (qualify and train) potential leaders. This guide should provide a measure to help to know if a person
is living I Timothy
3:8-13, the standards of a minister in the Word, and then to train them in
their responsibilities
as household fellowship coordinator.
I. Qualifications:
I Timothy 3:8-13: Likewise must the deacons [ministers]
be...
1. Grave--Dignified, worthy of respect,
honorable, reputable. Do their lives disgrace the ministry in any way? Do they
have a good report among the household (Acts 16:1 and 2)?
2. Not doubletongued -- Solid in their presentation of the Word;
not contradictory to the doctrine or practice of the present truth, Are they
convinced, clear, and consistent in their teachings?
3. Not given to much wine-- Not
excessive drinkers. How
much do they drink? How often do they drink? How much alcohol do they keep at home?
4. Not greedy of filthy lucre-- Are
they in control of their finances (e.g., do they keep a budget,
etc.)? Are they in debt? If so, are
they getting out of debt? (The best is if they are totally debt-free and have lived that way for at
least one year.) Have they been faithfully tithing (preferably abundantly sharing) for at least one
year? Be very specific in
evaluating their financial fife.
5. Holding [upholding] the mystery of the [household
of] faith in a pure [unmixed]
conscience-- Do
they walk with humility, meekness, and long-suffering, endeavoring
to keep spiritually united in the bond of peace? Do they ask for wise counsel?
Do they strive to live one day at a time and to resolve opportunities quickly
according to the Word? Do they report back? Do they reprove and correct according
to the Word (Matthew 18:15-17)? How do they respond to reproof and correction?
6. And let these also first be proved [examined, investigated, scrutinized, expecting a
positive result]--They should
have stood faithfully in the household for at least one year and have proven
themselves in all the qualifications of I Timothy 3:8-13. They should at least be Intermediate Class graduates, preferably Advanced Class graduates. In
most cases, a majority of this proving time would have been spent serving as an
assistant home fellowship coordinator.
7. Then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless [prepared on all points, unimpeachable in conduct] -- Once the Branch coordinator and the Limb
coordinator are both convinced that potential fellowship coordinators have
proven themselves and are unimpeachable in conduct and quality of life, then
they can serve as household fellowship coordinators.
8. Even so must their wives be grave--If
potential leaders are married, then their wives must also be dignified, worthy
of respect, honorable, reputable. Do their lives disgrace the ministry in any
way? Do they have a good report among the household (Acts 16:1 and 2)?
9. Not slanderers [Greek: diabolos]-- The wives should not be prone to speak false, injurious,
or devilish statements about others. Can they keep confidences? Do they speak
the truth with wisdom and love (Ephesians 4:15, Proverbs 31:26)?
10. Sober-- Are the wives clearheaded, mentally
alert, and self-controlled? How do they handle pressure?
11. Faithful in all things -- The wives should be thoroughly
trustworthy in every way. Are they as passionate about the truth and serving in
leadership as their husbands? Do they keep their homes decent and in order? Are
they gracious and hospitable? Do they report back?
12. Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife
--If potential leaders are married, they should have proven that they
faithfully strive to live up to what the Word says about husbands (Ephesians
5:23-29). Do they take care of their wives physically, mentally, and
spiritually?
13. Ruling their children and their own houses well-- Each potential leader should
diligently preside over his children and household. Is the rod of correction
used properly and consistently? How
does their home life work? Do the husband and wife relate to each
other? Are the children in order? Visit
their home and see how they live. Do they plan weekly or monthly schedules in
advance?
II. Training:
1. General--One of
the first great principles to developing and training leaders is that they
closely follow, observe, and work with their immediate overseers (home
fellowship and Branch coordinators). In Acts 1:21, Peter wanted to know who had
"companied with us" as Jesus Christ lived his life and exercised his
leadership abilities. In most cases, this means a potential home fellowship
coordinator would be an assistant coordinator.
2. Leading, a meeting
--The Way Corps minister should teach the potential leaders the heart and
details of running a meeting. This would include physical setup, planning an
order of service, song leading, preparing an inspirational and informative
announcement, introducing the teacher, etc. Then each leader-in-training should lead at least five meetings in the
Branch coordinator's presence. (Running
a meeting properly is one indicator of a good leader but is not the only indicator.)
3. Teaching --The
Way Corps minister should instruct the potential leaders on the fine art of
publicly expounding the scriptures (homiletics). This would include the three
major forms of teachings: topical, textual, and expository. This also would
include how to prepare to teach; how to organize the teaching (introduction,
overview, main body, summary, and conclusion); how to use appropriate
illustrations, visual aids, and props; and how to deliver the teaching within a
certain time frame (i.e., 15-20 minutes) so it has the maximum "kratos" impact. Then each leader-in-training should do at least five
teachings in the Branch coordinator's
presence. Two teachings should key off of current Way Magazine articles, two teachings
should key off of current Sunday Teaching Services, and one teaching from the
foundational class on The Way of Abundance and Power.
4. Planning,-- The
Way Corps minister would teach the potential leaders how to work a calendar in
planning a weekly and monthly schedule. This would include planning for
personal and family time, regular household fellowships, outreach activities,
etc. Each leader-in-training would then prepare and present a one-month
calendar to the Branch coordinator.
5. Outreach--The Way Corps
minister would teach the basic principles of witnessing and undershepherding to
the potential leaders using Outreach
Strategies of Jesus Christ and The
Rise and Expansion of the Christian Church in the First Century. Then
the Branch coordinator would go witnessing personally with each
leader-in-training at least twice. He would also work with them on detailed
follow-ups.
6. Counseling -- The potential leader should sit with the Branch coordinator in at least one
counseling session (if it is not too
confidential).
7. Finances --The
Way Corps minister should teach the potential leaders the heart and truth of
receiving an abundant sharing. This would include how and when to receive one,
how to steward the moneys, how to properly complete, submit, and keep records
of the required administrative forms, and how to send the moneys to the Finance Department at
Headquarters, Then each leader-in-training would handle the financial
responsibilities in the Branch coordinator's presence at least twice.

The Framework for Planning and Stewarding of Time
for The Way Corps
Every Way Corps individual
will do a weekly schedule to be submitted to his or her overseer. A
"proposed" schedule should be submitted for the following week by 5
p.m. on Friday. Although husbands and wives will work the ministry as a team,
each should submit their own schedule that would reflect their work in ministry
events, classes, and outreach activities as well as their personal time.
Singles will follow the same guidelines. At the end of the week each person
will submit to their overseer an "actual" report of what they
accomplished in that week, of both ministry and personal time. The "actual"
report is submitted along with the following week's schedule.
This is an example of a
workday for a full-time minister of The Way International.
I 8 a.m.-noon Way
Corps are to be in the office by 8 a.m. in proper office attire. This time is
reserved for office work for the head of the household. Wives should have
scheduled office time included as a part of their ministry hours. (Wives with
children should refer to the hours sheet to determine what is expected of
them.)
Office time should include:
planning time, planning outreach events, class preparation, and preparation for
leaders' meetings. It is also a time to work on ministry finances, make phone
calls, set appointments to secure rooms for events, handle ministry
correspondence, e.g., faxes, memos, letters, etc. This time may include study
of the Word to prepare for teachings and classes.
This is not a time for:
errands, doctor appointments, grocery shopping, car washing, lawn mowing,
exercising, family time, or personal study time.
2. 1 p. m. -3 p.m.
when an evening meeting is scheduled, I p.m.-5 r).m. when no evening
meeting is scheduled. The afternoon schedule would include: appointments with
believers for counseling, witnessing, securing meeting rooms, and checking out
areas in the community where you can move the Word of God with the household
fellowships in the Branch.
3. Evenings
Evenings are when we are
out with people. This would include household fellowship or Branch meetings,
including travel time, classes, outreach activities, counseling situations, and
follow-up time.
Evenings could also include
necessary phone and office time,
4. Schedule one full day
off or two half days. This can be during the week as long as your immediate
overseer is informed of this.
How to Implement the Weekly Schedule
On Friday, each Way Corps
individual plans the week ahead by filling out their weekly schedules. By
Friday at 5 p.m., each Way Corps faxes his schedule to his immediate overseer
for his review. He also faxes his "actual" report on his schedule from
the prior week. Overseers are to return the schedule sheets no later than 8:00
a.m. each Monday.
