As far as the ROA that year: It was one of the few i missed, and I thought that if I had gone he wouldn't have died because if I had gone I would have been able to pray more. . . and for years afterwards I made full effort to get to the roa so I could say I did my best to keep God's love alive. Ha! Ha! Ha!
I still miss Elvis, I'm told he actually still lives about 55 miles south of me but I'm starting to not think so. I thought I saw him on a street in Vegas a couple years ago but it was that twin of his (Cal) on the corner singing for quarters
I too was at the Shelby campgrounds when I heard the news. Someone tried to explain to me that it was just to overshadow the ROA but I could'nt buy into it. How could the death of the King not just naturally overshadow the WET, T-SHIRT soakin, tent and sleeping bag ruining group in a campground?
Did it never not rain? Craggers told us it was because of our sin in the camp and someone else said it was because of our unbelief - I wonder who was right. Id sure like to seek out Elvis for his wisdom on this matter

We (T-Bone and I) were standing in line for a wow-burger when we heard of Elvis' untimely death. I remember being stunned, along with a general sense of surprise that "the world" went on turning while we were safely tucked away at "the greatest gathering this side of the gathering together"...or however that quote went.
Because we were broke (having gone to pfal '77 earlier that year), we hitched to ROA all the way from Colorado. We camped in our little two-man pup tent, and I know it rained and was chilly at least part of the time because I remember taking refuge in one of the big tents during a daytime rainstorm.
Liz and I got married during that ROA. Family and friends flew in, and we escorted them from the Fairgrounds to the Way woods for a private little ceremony. 30 years ago, Sunday. While our friend Leslie Olson sang a song during the ceremony, a little bird came down and perched on a fencepost right next to her, and sang along. I never even heard about Elvis until after the honeymoon.

...and get this, the real reason that the devil chose that particular time to kill Elvis was because Stevie Kay Louie had just come out with a new album that was supposedly going to be picked up by a major label...UNTIL the king croaked!...and then all bets were off...they cancelled the contract with Stevie Kay so they could put out more Elvis albums...at least that was what some top twi leaders were saying...
I had pulled into the grassy parking lot that afternoon and was sitting in my car listening to the latest Stevie Kay Louis tape (It's A Wonder?). I got out of my car and saw an old friend just coming in off the WOW field from a state down south. He's the one who told me about Elvis. They had just driven in, and described driving through Memphis-seeing flags at half-staff and people staggering around like lost geese.
Naturally, be Way-brained as we were, we "marveled" at the coincidence of the world's attention being focused on this individual instead of on us!!!! In all fairness, I was not a huge Elvis fan, though I knew of and appreciated some of his music. It was his movies I was not impressed with.
Much later, I came to appreciate him more. Just recently, in one of my low moments, I saw the 25th anniversary Elvis special, and found myself sobbing to 'American Trilogy". Did my heart good, actually.
BTW-anybody remember Joyful Noise performing "American Trilogy" on ROA 71 (or maybe 72?) If anybody has a recording of that.......
People were shocked and horrified by "Elvis the Pelvis." How vulgar! How Obscene! He must be banned! Maybe he should be stoned!
Nowadays we have the genitals-grabbing Michael Jackson, and the obscenity, hate-spewing, " kill all da honkey shoot all da cops, beat the m*****f***** 'til they all drop" rap groups.
We've sure come a long, long way since "Love Me Tender." A long, long, long way DOWN!
I don't remember Joyful Noise doing it but I do remember hearing Barry McCoy perform it on closing night of the Rock one year. He played keyboards and sang.(Played keyboard for Gary Puckett and The Union Gap for a while)
Couldn't have been TOO bad if I still remember it after all this time.

Then again, I'm tempted to say 1973. -----I really don't know. :(
Seems like I remember they had some sort of fireworks display.
I think it was red, white and blue fireworks attached to a fence to replicate the flag.
It was the first time I had ever heard the medley and wasn't even aware of Elvis's version until many years later.
This one is for the princess. Bowtwi's princess of course. I heard she might be performing this song in the town's talent show and if so, Bowtwi will be making her a great costume. To those of you who haven't met her... she's a darling little girl.
I couldn't help but notice you still have $1.85 on that 1980 ROA meal ticket. The way I see it, twi owes you a wow burger and a drink (1980's prices?).
Just finished watching an Elvis concert on TV Land.
I was at the Rock as well getting ready to go out WOW. What a F'n waste of time.
However, the folks in the WOW family were pretty cool. Particularly my WOW brother. I also have fond memories of some of the local believers, a guy who worked theatre in town and a gal in high school. So, it wasn't a total loss. oops, almost forgot Paul Bunyan! Hello Brainerd!

Errr,check that...I mean the Sidney County fairgrounds in Lima (Ohio,not Peru)...

Lima is in Allen County, and the Rock was in Lima in '75.
I'm really really sure the '77 Rock was in Sidney, at the Shelby County fairgrounds.

What I found most significant about Elvis is that he sang/said "love" a million ways and never used ugly words like "hate."
He had about a billion different ways to say "baby," "honey," "sweetheart."
Both Milton Berle and Ed Sullivan said he was a fine young man and they were glad to have had him on their show.
I thought that if Christians prayed for him instead of cursing him, the whole world would have been a lot nicer.
