April Fools 2002

One of the best pranks that I pulled was in 2002.

I posed as a hacker and wrote in "Hackerese" that I had taken over the site. Shut down part of the site. That night I was going to Paul McCartney for the first time. I checked the site and there wasn't much reaction to the joke, so I didn't restore the site, figuring everyone knew it was a joke.

When I checked back a few hours later, total chaos. Poor Steve! took the whole thing seriously. I had phone calls and emails waiting for me.

The next year, I had written an article explaining that twi had bought GSC and we were now a subsidiary of twi. Even redid the logo for the day. But decided not to publish it.

Most admirable Captain Pawtucket. Your actions remind me of Orson Wells' 1938 "The War of the Worlds" (which was in October, not on April 1st).

I believe that per the Department of Tomfoolery , on April 1st of each year certain acts which may be construed as lacking in integrity or decorum during the other days of the year, become the responsibility of the prankee, and therefore the prankster is not held accountable for any repercussions which occur as a result of the gullibility of the prankee.

I thought I held up the tradition yesterday (April Fools 2011) pretty well at work. As I noted in the shoutbox I responded to my boss's request to update my soon to expire gaming registration by saying that I wasn't planning on doing so since the Gaming Control Board really wouldn't mind. Then I wrote an audit report with a finding against the Controller of the company for allowing the Compliance Officer and the Records and Data Retention Specialist to parade around in bunny costumes and dispense variously colored spheres and confections. The Controller responded in her Management's Response that she had performed further research and identified that this was allowed under the auspices of the Department of Tomfoolery. I submitted the report to the Corporate Director of Internal Audit (for whom I am a Manager) so he could issue the report; however, I believe it might have died on his desk, but hope to see it resurrected on the April 1, 2012.

Additionally a Staff Internal Auditor attempted to convince me that some act of non-compliance was in progress and that I was being held accountable for it's occurrence (and he is a most admirable straight-faced liar. I forget exactly what he was saying because he is so funny. He's got the most complicated and dry wit); however, I did remember at the time that no one is to be trusted or believed on April 1st, ever! And was not led astray.

It is my understanding that the mark of a good prankster is to hold off on identifying your actions as tomfoolery.
