As far as I can tell, he's mentioned Major Tom by name in exactly 2 songs, and 1 of those was "Space Oddity."   You do have the correct artist.

I checked the lyrics for "Starman", "Darkstar" and "Hallo Spaceman."  No mentions of "Major" or "Tom" or "Major Tom."  The videos may have included visual referents - "Darkstar" had one I know of-  and he might have been thinking of Major Tom in the others, but a lot of that's open to interpretation.    By name, Bowie mentioned him in the lyrics of 2 songs.

"Ashes To Ashes" seemed to have been Bowie saying goodbye to a decade where he struggled with substance abuse and had hits like "Space Oddity."   I'm glad he was able to get clean and keep going for decades more.

He made mention of Major Tom in four songs, including Hallo Spaceman and Starman and Blackstar.

I listened to the song Hallo Spaceman because I had never heard of it and it does not have the words Major Tom in the lyrics.  And the song Blackstar doesn't have those words in them and neither does Starman .  So, only two songs with the words Major Tom in them.  You are correct yourself WordWolf.

Heads up!

Choose yourself a partner
From the middle of the floor
Blow a little kiss
To the woman next door
Step on the gas
Put your head in the air
Make a 'V' sign
And you throw back your hair

A Blues Brothers esk song

Think about nothing now
You're nice and high
You're advocating love
But you don't know why
Now you getting vibrations
All down to your feet
That's the brow beatin'
Heavy leather resurrection beat

A Blues Brothers esk song

I'm going to turn over the cards.   It was Resurrection Shuffle by ~Ashton, Gardner and Dyke

New song:

I was sick and tired, fed up with this
And decided to take a drive downtown
It was so very quiet and peaceful
There was nobody, not a soul around
I laid myself out, I was so tired
And I started to dream
In the morning the parking tickets were just
Like a flag stuck on my window screen

The telephone is ringing
I say, hi, it's me, who is there on the line?
A voice says, hi, hello, how are you?
Well, I guess I'm doin' fine
He says, it's three a.m., there's too much noise
Don't you people ever wanna go to bed?
Just 'cause you feel so good, do you have
To drive me out of my head

I was sick and tired, fed up with this
And decided to take a drive downtown
It was so very quiet and peaceful
There was nobody, not a soul around
I laid myself out, I was so tired
And I started to dream
In the morning the parking tickets were just

I live in an apartment on the ninety-ninth floor of my block
And I sit at home looking out the window
Imagining the world has stopped
Then in flies a guy who's all dressed up just like a Union Jack
And says, "I've won five pounds if I have his kind of detergent pack"

The telephone is ringing
I say, "hi, it's me, who is there on the line?"
A voice says, "hi, hello, how are you?"
"Well, I guess I'm doin' fine"
He says, "it's three a.m., there's too much noise
Don't you people ever want to go to bed?
Just 'cause you feel so good

Do you have to drive me out of my head?"

That's the song.  And if I may add too, the Palmer in ELP isn't the singer Robert Palmer (Simply Irresistible).  I believe it was you WordWolf who set me straight on that one.

That's quite possible.  ELP's Palmer was CARL PALMER.   At one point, they replaced him with "Powell" but he seemed to return later.    A few years ago,  "THE CARL PALMER TRIO"  did a world tour through here (with a note that he's that  "Palmer" on the posters.)    (World tours seem to pass here a year after they pass the US.)

"We are the World" with just about everybody.

I remember that "turn the stone to bread" line, as it was horribly inaccurate.

George

That song is correct.  The description of the group is accurate enough.  It was called "USA for Africa."

It's funny how, sometimes, it's the inaccuracies that can stick in your craw decades later.

I actually might have gotten it from the end, when Ray Charles took over. "All right, let me here you!" He sang counterpoint to everyone else at that point.
