  1. A few years ago an author of a book about how the King James Version was written was on C-SPAN.

He said that the King James Version's English was old-fashioned English at the time it was written and by using language that was a few generations out-of-date the writers were following the tradition of Wycliffe and the Latin Vulgate.

    It's still my favorite version.

  2. Well of course then there's the other lie of religion in general - "We know something REALLY important that you don't know!"

That may be true for some but I don't think it's a general law.

I'm reading a primer titled "The Greek and Roman Myths" by Philip Matyszk and I get the sense that everybody in the Greek world knew about the legends so I don't think having special knowledge was a drawing card for them.

  3. I agree with your first two statements.

What do you mean by "spirit teaching"?

    A side note:

By Jewish lore (not the bible) the name we call Jehovah is not to be pronounced but, among his many accomplishments, Immanuel Velikovsky knew enough of the Hebrew language to be one of the first in British controlled Palestine to translate modern literature into Hebrew and he suggests that the probable pronunciation of the last vowel is "oo" (as in "who") rather than "eh."

  4. Pot and kettle, dude. Pot and kettle. Refresh my memory: what was that you were saying about intellectual honesty?

You repeat yourself and your memory isn't fresh.

Is there anything else you'd like to share about yourself?

  5. It appears to me that he replies to posts (often personal attacks) directed at him.

Perhaps if the posters who call him names or make up psychological diagnosis about him poured some cool water on their heads-on-fire then maybe the threads would be shorter.

  6. I don't know if you realize how much your polarity response is damaging your credibility. Just in this thread:

Searching "polarity response" one finds the best advice for polarity response is to make the center pin the load.

    Polarity response

Your power supply should be fine since it is AC and the Monitor needs AC thus the polarity shouldn't matter but to be safe make the center pin should be the load and the outer pin should be neutral!

    Polarity Response

The only other sites that come up about "polarity response" are from a devotee of cult maven Tony Robbins.

johniam is a long time poster on these forums and his views have been consistent and credible.

  7. Hi Tony!

    And a belated Welcome!

(I see you’ve already met the official welcoming committee :) )

I sympathize with those who come to a site with its own prayer forum and then get their heads bit off for thinking it’s a Christian site.

For what it’s worth, I’ve been following these forums from the get-go and haven’t evolved ten seconds from PFAL.

  8. It...

    just...

    won't...

    die!!!!

Now, at the end of days, there is a song out about your obsession. They think they're singing "Drop the THE" about Facebook but we know better.

  9. He sent them to the principal’s office because their hair was too long and in return they named their band after him.

Their first album was titled “Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd.”

When he first heard the album he called it "noise" but he later allowed them to put a photo of his realty company on the inside cover of their third album and introduced them at a concert in Jacksonville.

Forby Leonard Skinner has passed away.

Tongue-in-cheek inspiration to Lynyrd Skynyrd dies at 77 - Jacksonville - Florida Times Union

Pronounced Lynyrd Skynyrd; band namesake dies

  10. The people of the Middle East were aware of much of the world. They certainly knew about Africa and India and Russia and probably China and the Far East.

The Romans (and therefore Paul) were well aware of the Britains and Germans since at least the time of Julius Caesar.

The Scandinavians had traded with Egypt since around 2000 B.C. and they traded with and were well known in Bagdad.

    Colossians 1:23:

    23 If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;

The verse could be parsed to mean that it was "every creature" that Paul was "made a minister" to.

Paul did enjoy an occasional embellishment.

    Romans 1:8

8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world.

  11. I am by no means a scholar in Aramaic, but James would be correct. From the Jewish perspective the holy spirit is referenced as a she.

I'm not a language scholar either but I've seen the word "moved" in - "And the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters" - translated as "brooded" - like a mother hen brooding over her eggs.

If in fact that is a correct translation then the first reference to God as spirit is feminine.

  12. Ron,

It looks like GoDaddy has WordPress available - it may be already included in your package. There are a lot of Word Press Themes - as of today 1,213 of them. Some have more features than others. There are some really sharp out-of-the-box photo galleries.

The "Suffusion" theme is often used for photo galleries.

Not much need to code anything and it's fairly easy to change themes until you get one you like but be happy with what you've chosen before loading it up.

In WP you get extra features with plugins. Not all plugins work with every theme.

You activate themes and plugins by point and click.

  13. Hey is "Joe in Joppa" copywrited? Love it.

    Plagiarize at will, Bob. :)

I got so carried away talking about my new avatar I neglected to tell you why I like to be anonymous.

The first time I posted in this community (on GSC's predecessor WayDale) I signed off with my full name. The site's administrator quickly removed it. I figured he probably knew more about the site's posters and lurkers than I did and I haven't used it since.

  14. Thanks Bob, that cleared up a lot.

Turns out, I'm one of them there substrate guzzlers my own self but more for populist reasoning than scholarly.

The way I figure, since most of the early church were Semitic language speakers and readers, the originals would be in a Semitic language rather than the highfalutin Greek which the average Joe in Joppa or Jerusalem wouldn't know.

My avatar is brand new. I've been posting for years without one and started shopping around for one a few weeks ago. One of my Twitter followers is an Iranian (in-country Green) who has an Oxford student follower who has an avatar of the intensely swarthy chap I'm now sporting.

I'm hoping the snappy fez will be a hit with the chicks.
