  1. Good gried, OS, that's outrageous. How long do all those penalties lasdt? How long till someone can vote again, receive Federal aid, etc.? Surely these things are time-limited, though the article doesn't say so. The US doesn't seem very good at rehabilitating people back into society, but surely punishment doesn't go on...and on...and on.

They key word in that link is MAY. Doesn't mean it will happen - the implementation of the MAY part is dependent upon a number of factors, including what you were convicted of, whether or not it was a first offence, etc. etc.

  2. So is rape a "spiritual event?" I hadn't thought much CF&S but I must have not paid attention when he said that.

How totally weird it sounds now.

Well, if you were raping your wife it was a Godly act. Afterall, you body is no longer your own.

    Just sayin

  3. I totally agree Ducttape. And yes, Facebook does pull information to suggest friends. I'm not sure it accesses your email accounts to do this unless you give them permission to. It will pull information from your friends list on facebook to suggest people you might know.

And you have to know how to set your privacy settings and what the pitfalls of using applications are. But, if you think your email providers and your internet service provider is not also tracking where you go on the internet, you are fooling yourself. In this day and age, internet privacy is mostly a myth.

Everything you do on the internet has a risk factor attached to it. Each individual has to decide the risk v the value and make their own judgment call. Many people enjoy facebook and have few problems, others have had a lot of problems.

The facebook group is set up for those who want to use it. It is not going to be for everyone and is not intended to be a replacement for greasespot. It is simply another method to allow those who want to, to stay in touch.

  4. There are a couple of people in the facebook group that are using their Greasespot names for their facebook accounts. That is fine. I only ask that you PM me here, so that I know it is really you.

  5. Just so everything is up front, Bramble has made me an administrator at GSC again with my permission. I volunteered to continue to help out there at least until her husband is well. But, I have also made sure I am protected against further false accusations, by gathering what I needed to show that I did not remove anyone from the list.

  6. Some people, I wouldn't moderate if my life depended on it. Never moderated Mike. Never moderated johniam. Tried never to moderate anyone I got into fights with, just to play it safe. I did moderate one person I probably shouldn't have. I stand by the moderating, but someone else should have done it. In any event, I checked with the other mods to make sure I wasn't letting personal tension get in the way of fairness. Funny thing is, I actually like that poster. We just got into fights now and then for reasons that somehow don't seem important.

Funny how some of the things that once seemed so important don't anymore, eh?

  7. It isn't so much that I want my life back, as it is time for a fresh look at what the ex-way community is. I put the blog section up, hoping more would utilize it. Blogs are much better for sharing your experience than a thread, I think anyway.

And I am finally setting out on my spiritual journey, no offshoots thank you very much, I haven't done that since starting GS. I didn't want my viewpoint to skew things here and they would have done that. The position that I am in, almost requires "religious neutrality" Over the years, I have spoken with Dr. Juedes about this matter, I just wasn't drawn to anything. And the Way teachings had soured my outlook on traditional religions.

I may have mentioned this elsewhere, but I will share it again. I had something from my past that needed resolution, being molested as a teen by a priest. That had filtered the way I looked at just about everything in life. I have let it sit in the back of my mind for decades. About a year ago, I got in contact with a local journalist that followed the Catholic priest molestations for years. I asked him if he had heard of this priest, he hadn't. He did say that the Diocese had set up an independent office to investigate the crimes and he kept the bishop up to date, but it would first be reported to the authorities, (Police or Sheriff) And he would not let the Diocese interfer in any way.

I contacted the office, reported the crime, was deposed. I got to find out what happened to the priest. While he had died many years ago and the statute of limitations had long expired, I had finally reported the crime. It lifted quite a load from my shoulders and cleared the way for getting on with my journey.

This year has been challenging. With all the good, much turmoil has happened.

It is a very difficult thing, to come forward with a story like yours. I wish you peace on your continued journey and may 2011 bring much joy to all of us!

  8. There have been many that have moderated over the years. It's not a fun job much of the time, but it has to be done. I started identifying moderators with the "mod" prefix to give the mods a chance to be a poster and a moderator. In the beginning, they did it with their normal screen name, and could not post without getting hounded for their moderator duties.

Here are the "mod" names, not all were used

    Modaustin

    modwaiter

    Mod Kirk

    modpsycho

    modcat5

    Modbot

    ModDog

    modduck

    modrabbit

    modrobin

    modmalibu386

    mod45rpm

    modchef

    modbaker

    mdousop

    modwildcat

    Modgellan

    ModRocker

    modelvis

Okay, okay, I confess. I am Modbaker. There, I have come out of the closet. Are you happy now??

Actually this is Abigail. The most hated and feared of all moderators. ;)

  9. Some of the newer posters down here have been making exremely lengthy posts. I would like to point out that the doctrinal forum is for discussion, not recruitment and not lecturing. It is a place where people can have a conversation with each other and/or friendly debate about doctrinal issues.

Posts that are as lengthy as some of them have been more recently, are not condusive to conversation and take up a lot of bandwidth. In addition, if you are posting information that is taken from another website, you are potentially infriging on a copyright. Please simply post a link and a small sampling of what can be found on the website instead of cutting and pasting the entire thing.

  10. I'm not certain that there is such a "rule" George, but it has been my experience that generally moderators do not moderate in threads they are posting in - generally they ask another mod to take a look at it, if they think there is a problem.

  11. Again, the topic of the thread is Defining WayBrain. Just as it was asked that it not be changed to a topic regarding rules (there is such a thread already in the Open Forum btw), I would ask that the topic not be changed to one discussing another poster.

    Thank you. :)

  12. To me this is very simple. There is no NEED (though some may certainly want to) to use insulting/attacking language towards other posters or reveal personal information about other posters (which in essence is what the rules say).

Some people may feel their freedom of speech has been hindered because insulting/attacking language will be moderated. They may even leave. But I think ultimately a lot more people will be more comfortable posting, if they know they don't have to put up with being attacked. Having been at the cafe pretty much since its inception, I can think of quite a few people who don't come here at all anymore or rarely come here, because they got sick of being attacked and insulted.

One can disagree with someone's opinion and state that disagreement without attacking the person who posted it. Attack the message, don't attack the messenger.

And as one of the new mods (who also cares a great deal about what happens to this place and how effective or ineffective it is at "telling the other side of the story") I will make mistakes as I learn. When anyone else out there suddenly becomes perfect, let me know and I will hand over my moderating log-in information with great pleasure. :biglaugh:

And this should be considered too - if Paw really wanted to (and quite obviously he doesn't) he could shut down the forums and simply work with what is already here in articles and posts. Similarly he could shut down all forums except "about the way" and in a sense achieve the goal of telling the other side of the story.

He is very generous to give us so much room and so many forums to post in. Perhaps we could remember that. Perhaps we could remember that no matter how much we may dislike another poster, no matter how much we may want to lash out at them in a post - this is Paw's place and out of respect for all Paw does in making this place available, one should use a bit more self-restraint.

  13. D - as moderators we are still learning the ropes too. There will be a learning curve for us, in knowing when to edit a post and when to just leave it alone. I would suggest that people please feel free to send a PM to a moderator if they don't understand why one of their posts were moderated.

I also hope as moderators we will communicate well with the posters, who also have a learning curve in figuring out how the new rules apply, and will let you know why we have taken an action. :)

  14. You might try taking this issue up with the moderator in question and have a discussion with him/her. I must say though, it is my understaning that no one threatened or even hinted that you might be banned.
