  1. For those of you who would like to read about the First Annual Southern Comfort Weenie Roast....it's the top subject in the July 2002 Inactive forum under Archives. It is highly recommended reading! Everyone was considerate of other's needs.....whatever they were.

Also - for those staying in a cabin, especially if all the beds are spoken for:

The Park is pretty stingy with bathtowels....only four to a cabin (and they are tiny). So, I'm bringing my own.

  2. Please keep this in your prayers - I just called the Park, Cabin #13 has not yet yielded. I just KNOW they will, but they need to cancel in time for us to know how to proceed.

Pray that they will call and cancel their reservation soon!

  3. Ummm - I don't know if I should say this or not - but because I love you all....I think I will.

Cathy.....bring everything you can fit in your vehicle. Remember last year? Mikey (whom I love dearly!) icon_biggrin.gif:D--> said he'd bring coffee, but didn't. So, don't count on his stuff. icon_wink.gif;)--> He means well, but he IS a guy. LOL

I'm riding in someone else's car, and I have to limit what I'm bringing. I thought I'd bring some non-essential stuff that would just make the weekend more fun/or comfortable.

  4. How so very typical of you to be so considerate to post a greeting, Tcat! Thank you!!!! You've been in my prayers, and it's rewarding to see your post. Thank you. icon_wink.gif;)-->

  5. Thank you all for being in agreement with me on this.

It IS a big deal to me (otherwise I wouldn't have posted here)....but I meant 'a small request' in light of the other more serious requests usually on this board.

After all - I keep reminding myself, Xena is ONLY a dog. But.....I still want her to be able to come, too.

  6. Up On High & Everyone who's interested -

It's sort of late, now, to make arrangements - but "too far" is NO excuse. Some are driving 8 hours (or more) after they get off work Friday night to join us.

Decide now, to join us next year at the Third Annual Southern Comfort Weenie Roast.

I drove through a tornado to get there last year - it was worth the effort!

(And I'm an old 'disabled' single lady. If I can do it) - you can too!

  7. Dot -

I s'pose so, but it's more complicated than that. "Whomever" has the reservation for that cabin, is NOT a Greasespot person. The Park Employees (understandably) won't reveal the name of that party to me.

They probably have a dog they want to bring, too.

There are about 20 cabins at that park, and 3 are reserved by GS'ers. If a 'pet-approved' cabin were reserved by another GS'er, I'm sure we could work something out. But I got in on this years' Weenie Roast too late to claim the cabin I wanted. I only just secured my transportation a few days ago. Oh! That's another need.

My "ride" has to be okay with a dog coming along too - but I thought I'd take this one step at a time. LOL

  8. The reservation of cabin #13 at the Tim's Ford State Park needs to be cancelled for the weekend of the Sept 19. I don't want anything bad to happen to the current holder of that reservation - but I want them to change their minds in light of something (better?) different for that weekend.

Cabin #13 is one of only two cabins that allow pets. Please pray with me, that I can bring Xena, the cocker spaniel who is a sweet joy-inspiring dog and my best friend.

  9. Herbi -

    Pay Tenshun! LOL

    Sudo gots #11

Zix gots #7 (if he's still commin)

    You got #10

(all gleaned from this forum) - if I'm wrong please correct me.

Cathy - my address book is gone. Could you please e-mail me? same address as last year. thks.

Has anyone from this Forum reserved Cabin #1 or #13? VERY IMPORTANT - let Herbal or me know, please!!!

    -------------------------------------------

May Is National Military Appreciation Month

Air Force Print News reports that organizers for National Military Appreciation Month are asking Americans to show their appreciation for the military by displaying the American flag and the POW/MIA flag May 1 through Flag Day on June 14. In 1999, a resolution was passed in Congress proclaiming May as National Military Appreciation Month. The month remembers those who gave their lives in defense of the nation's freedom and honors those Americans who have served their country, and the men and women now serving in uniform on active duty, in the National Guard and Reserve and all of their families. More than 80 million Americans have served in uniform in more than 225 years of American history. May includes Loyalty Day (May 1), VE Day (May 8), Military Spouse Day (May 9), Armed Forces Day (May 17) and Memorial Day (May 30). Event organizers are asking all Americans to remember, honor and appreciate the military by displaying U.S. flags and yellow ribbons on cars, homes, businesses and in classrooms.

  11. Conspiracy? Naw! Really?

    ******************************************

Bush recently went to an elementary school for a photo op. He met with a gifted class and was taking questions from the kids.

Little Johnny stood up and said he had three questions.

    1) Doesn't the Constitution require congress to make a formal declaration before going to war?

    2) Isn't it true that there's no evidence linking Saddam to 9/11?

    3) Whatever happened to Osama?

Just then the bell rang and the class was taken out to recess. When they came back the President said that he'd take more questions again.

Little Nancy jumped up and said she had five questions. She said, 'I want you to answer Johnny's three questions and I have two more:

    1) Why did the bell ring twenty minutes early, and;

    2) Where's Johnny?

"Good intentions will always be pleaded for every assumption of authority. It is hardly too strong to say that the Constitution was made to guard the people against the dangers of good intentions. There are men in all ages who

mean to govern well, but they mean to govern. They promise to be good masters, but they mean to be masters." -- Daniel Webster

  12. The funny thing 'bout pet dogs, is this - they can be as demanding as a child, but the return for lots of care and love, is priceless!

I adopted a cocker spaniel from the local shelter. She was about a year old then, and had big behavioral problems (yes, she snapped when she felt threatened). But with lots of love, tolerance, and patience, she is now, the sweetest, most beautiful dog you can imagine.

For 3 years, I kept her groomed with the standard Cocker cut. Waayyyy too much trouble to keep nice! And because I didn't brush her regularly (she fought it, hated brushing) she developed skin allergy problems. So the answer for us, was to clip her hair fairly short.....just a little longer on the legs and 'skirt' (below the front and hind shoulders ). She needs good food, and is a picky eater.

She's small (under 30 lbs) but has a ferocious bark, when she thinks her home needs defense. She would be happier if she got more exercise, she loves to sniff new odors. This dog just loves to please. She loves people, is gentle (instinctively) with babies and stangers. She draws compliments from everyone....strangers stop and remark at how beautiful she is - she just inspires joy! She plays well with a cat who also shares our appartment. She no longer 'snaps' at anyone, under any circumstance.

There are lots of really great dogs who need loving homes at the animal shelters. Plan to spend money at the vetinarian to get the animal healthy, then learn how to keep her healthy; you'll have a loyal, loving companion.

    My Costs:

As for messes - I recommend that everyone with a pet, get a Bissell Little Green Machine($69 at K-mart). Accidents happen living in an apartment (no fenced yard). But the little carpet cleaner removes a lot of the anxiety for me.

Costs can vary from city to city. Luckily, on the 'poor' side of town, I found an animal hospital that offers very cheap services (spay or neuter your pet!) and loving, competent care. That's around $100 - $150. In some areas, pet-advocacy groups offer coupons or discounts on the surgery.

Vaccinations & boosters are a yearly event: $10-rabies, $30-cocktail of assorted vaccines. Flea protection (I stand by Advantage for dogs, the cost is guaged by weight of the dog) is around $35 for 3 month supply. Then add $25/6 mos for heartworm pills. I can't remember the original fee the shelter charged - it might have been $25 for application processing.

If you need to be away from home for 24 hours or more, boarding costs start at $10 a day (not including the guilt you'll feel, of leaving her and missing her presence). Mixed breeds are, from what I've read and heard, generally better at resistance to disease, and are 'smarter' and have less problems than purebreds.

I'm single and was able to spend the time with my dog that she needed, so the 'typical' problems of her breed are not evident. Your dog will grow up to mirror the love you've given her.
