Too funny about your uncle playing pool with Elvis. I think just about anybody from Memphis has some kind of Elvis story.

My dad says once he was stopped at a stop light, and Elvis pulled up next to him on his motorcycle with Natalie Wood on the back.

My mom knew a girl in high school (Elvis was a couple of years ahead of her in school) who went out with Elvis once, and when her parents found out, she was forbidden to go out with him again. I guess he was considered kind of a hoodlum by parents. Mom says he hung out with "a rough crowd."

  2. Hey you fellow BB King fans. I don't know if you guys ever get down to Memphis but BB has a club on Beale Street. Whenever he's in town, he plays there and like you said Socks, it's great.

His club isn't that big, and you can touch the musicians from the dance floor. He's a pretty friendly guy and likes to hang out and talk and such. He's definitely the king at his club.

When he's not there, and sometimes even if he is, there's a phenominal singer, Miss Ruby, the "Queen of Beale Street," who usually sings a set or two. The club closes at 2 am, and she always closes with a prayer thanking Jesus Christ her Lord and Saviour. She's a sweetie, and hubby and I have sat and talked with her a time or two. She considers Beale Street her "mission field."

Al Green also pastors a big church in Memphis and the music there really rocks. I love the music scene in Memphis. So if you guys are ever in the neighborhood, it's a good place to stop in.

  3. I've said this before here at the cafe, so if I sound redundant, many apologies.

After being involved with the way, for my latter teens and most of my 20's, I found myself flung into the real world at age 28 or so, not having very good conflict resolution skills.

Working in the "business world," I found myself in a job where resolving conflict was mostly what I was called upon to do. I realized pretty quickly that I was clueless. While I was involved with the way, relationships stayed pretty shallow because people never seemed to be able to work out their differences or resolve problems. Group think mentality prevailed.

Perhaps many of us excultees just need to sharpen our skills a little, and maybe just maybe the cafe is a place where we can "practice?"

Ok, ok, I know I belong to the "why can't we just all get along" group.

As far as RG and CFF goes, I have no experience except here at GS. But I must say, that RG has always impressed me as one who is both a gentleman and a scholar, and handles himself with grace and poise. That impresses me. And even though I don't agree with alot of his ideas and opinions, etc., I respect what he has to say because of his composure and consideration of others' views. He doesn't seem to mind the harder questions. I admire that trait in him. I feel the same way about many of the posters here.

So there, I said it. I think it's probably possible for us to all express ourselves without the jabs and barbs, but then again, what do I know?

I can still disagree with someone, yet respect them as a fellow human. I might not want to have some over for dinner, but then again, I'm not always welcome either. C'est la vie.

    Thoughtfully,

  4. Wow, I just reread this thread and I have a question.

How do I put this delicately? hmmmm, maybe I missed it somewhere, but.....

Have Reuben and Rhoda passed away? or are they still living?

I have many fond memories of keeping "Uncle" Reuben company at the fuel plaza, and eating dinner with them. They were so incredibly kind and sweet to me, and I was just an in-rez peon.

Does anyone know what became of them? Sorry if I missed it somewhere.

"Uncle" Reuben told me LOTS of stories that I still remember. It was quite enlightening, hanging out with him.

  5. Geeze, even though I don't frequent chat as regularly as I used to, the thought of the doors not being open.....sheesh, panic attack. (OK, just kidding.)

It's like the corner drug store with the soda fountain closing. Even though I don't always drop in, it's nice to know that when I do, there's always a friendly face or two, fresh coffee and desserts, and lots of good gossip and such.

Oh my gosh. Where will congregate to discuss the news of the day? Don't tell me a superwalmart or something is moving in.

  6. Al, I'll email you again.

And no, I didn't KNOW Elvis, although I did meet him once by accident. A friend of mine found a pair of his sunglasses and we returned them. He was really glad cause he said they were his favorite pair and he wondered where he'd lost them. He just was nice enough to let us kids ride our horses through his back yard.

His generosity was legendary around town.

I love what you said about Elvis. When I was a kid, we boarded our horse at Graceland Farms, the property adjoining his in Memphis. He was always really good about letting us ride on his land, and didn't mind us kids bugging him. (There were no fences in those days.) Even though I didn't know anything about or appeciate his music, I always thought he was one of the kindest adults around.

  8. I have no profound reason for being ex10 other than I had trouble logging onto Waydale, so my husband did it for me. I was gone when he sat down to do it, and he couldn't ask me what my login name should be. So, being the kind, considerate soul that he is, he thought that an easy to remember login name would be good. And since the whole site had to do with the way, and well, you can guess, ex10 was born. I have family members who lurk, so I wanted to be incognito. But of course, most of them recognized me by my stories. Sigh.

I could've changed my name many times, but actually I've become reacqainted with many former friends and colleagues because of being ex10, so I've stuck with it. Besides, I keep thinking that my greasespot days will be over soon, so why change?

I picked my Grace Kelly icon, because she is tall, blond with blue eyes, and looks like my most of my family. And I really love her in Hitchcock movies.

Alas, I've underestimated the GS hold on me, and my affinity for it.

  9. This subject is one that is so complicated for me in some ways. Geeeze, I don't want to get too personal yet I feel like I should share some things.

My family has a genetic blood disease. Yes, it's in our GENES. The symptoms of this disease are other diseases. Yeah, I know, it gets complicated. My point is that no amount of dietary control and discipline, exercise, herb taking, counseling, etc. will extend the lives of my afflicted family members. Drugs, yes, the kind produced by pharmatceutical companies, as evil as they may be, (ok, I'm being a tad bit sarcastic) are what allows my loved ones to live, and have somewhat of a "normal life."

I love what Goey, Hoperich, oenofil and others have shared. I understand in a perfect world, there would be no need for such therapies.

I just think that my family members should have a chance at life, regardless if it involves prescribed medication or not.

By the way, by the grace of God, I nor my children have the genes for this affliction. But my siblings have not fared as well. Hard as I might try, I can't change anybody's genetic make-up with herbs and diet and exercise.

Sorry if I have offended anybody,

  10. I don't wanna get in a debate or anything, but I have some experience in this field. Take the meds, dear, and get counseling.

I respect what masterherbalist and others have to say, but herbs don't work for everyone. God's not gonna get ya cause you take meds.

    Love, ex10

  11. Hey Sudo

Just thought I'd let you know that my brother is in Memphis and is coming home tomorrow, with, yes, you're not gonna believe it, drumroll please........TOPPS BARBEQUE!!! He's bringing a shoulder with slaw and beans.

It's my husband's birthday, so we're gonna have a pool party with real, true, genuine TOPPS!

Wheeee, doggies. J thinks he done died and went to heaven. I think I might even pull out my life sized, cardboard cut-out of Elvis for the occasion
