  1. Splash screens are the name given to those annoying windows that pop up right before a program opens. They amount to nothing more than advertisements for the company that created them. Furthermore they add to the time it takes for the program to open.

First try to get rid of them through the usual options in the program. Sometimes there are no options to get rid of these damn splash screens. Naturally, the offenders purposely do not make it easy. Here are the keys to disabling a few common splash screens:

    Outlook Express

To disable the opening Outlook Express screen:

    Start Regedit

    Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER Identities

Keep drilling down below your unique identity all the way until you get to 5.0. For example: HKEY_CURRENT_USER Identities{ABE2B8A0-C02D-11D3-867B-948FF355BD32}SoftwareMicrosoft Outlook Express 5.0

Add a DWORD and call it NoSplash

Click on your new DWORD and give it a value of 1.

Close Regedit. No more splash screen in Outlook Express.

    MusicMatch Jukebox

To remove the splash screen in MusicMatch Jukebox simply go to the MusicMatch directory, probably under C:Program FilesMusic Match.

Find the .jpg file and the .wav file associated with the splash screen and delete them both.

    PC Anywhere

You can disable the pcAnywhere splash screen with a command line switch added to the shortcut.

The command line with switch is:

    WINAW32.EXE /R.

The easiest way to implement this is to create a

shortcut either on the desktop, on the Start Menu, or under Start/Programs

on the Start Menu if you do not already have one. Just add the /R outside the quotes. For example:

    "C:Program FilesSymantecpcAnywhereWinaw32.exe" /r

    To edit the shortcut:

    1. Right-click the shortcut. The context menu appears.

    2. Choose Properties and then choose the shortcut tab.

    3. In the "Target" window, scroll to the end of the command line

and add the /R after the quotes..

    4. Click Apply and then click OK

  2. He said he once smoked pot with the real Beatles so I sorta, kinda, thought that kinda made him a Beatle too. After all, he sounded like them.

    Is my logic flawed or....???

  3. Attention 9th Corps - You are welcome to have your Household Holiday Banquet at the newly refurbished Ex-Way Fine Arts & Historical Center.

We have many historical photos and artifacts from the early days when we were just getting started with the things of God.

Dress your best. We will have Wolfgang and gang doing chamber music in the background all night. Also a surprise guest is coming from Toledo to give us a lecture entitled "What to look for in a personal trainer."

  4. Ex- Tried guzzling that six pack and fell into a deep sleep. (Last I heard, ME was not as young as I used to be).

Power searched Google, still no trace of Me.

Tuttle, I asked my daughter for advice and she said this to ME:

"I hate you, you hate me

    I shot Barney's Family,

With an M-16 I shot him in the head,

Aren't you glad that Barney's dead"

    Still searching.

  5. There is more to this about our Corps being so perfect beside being #7.

The good Doctor at a Night Owl one night told us how great we were. Something about our Corps having more potential than anybody, anywhere, anyhow, anyway.

I'll try to find the exact quote. Maybe Cookie can get it for me. That statement was treated like words of prophecy among some of the more "zealous" ones in our group.

  6. Simon

I think it is because of the group picture which is posted above. Not sure what can be done about that. Maybe won't happen on page 2 if we ever reach page 2 status.

This will give you an excuse to ask for that 21" monitor from Santa for Xmas.

  7. Saimoneon, we just saw Bruce Springsteen in concert. It was great. What a show!

Remember all those 8mm movies Tricia Byrne took? She was forever carrying around her little camera and filming things. This was you first, our last year.

After some digging I finally contacted her in Germany. I asked her if I could get copies of her films so I could convert them to DVD. I offered to pay for it. Regretably she said she lost all her films

  8. You extreme PC tweakers and overclockers are making my head spin. But I must admit I find it very interesting.

But back to a basic tip. Some of you may know it but for anyone who doesn't, you will find it very useful.

I am referring to "Send To"

RIGHT click on a file or a Word document, for example. You will find the choice to Send To: (several things to choose from)

My most commonly used choices are "Mail Recipient" and "Desktop as a shortcut".

Selecting Mail recipient opens Outlook and automatically attaches the file to your email message.

You can also find these "Send To" features under File at the top left corner of most programs.

Look at your broswer now and go to File and look for Send To. You can select from three useful choices.

  9. (Sorry, me.) I had a feeling you were an expert from some of your posts. I will be having a few questions for you on a few things in the future if you don't mind.

I am using RDRAM on a few computers but SDRAM on several others. How do I try some of those BIOS tweaks you were suggesting? I do not recall seeing things like that in my Bios but will check again. You said:

    _________________________________________________________________

First, you can tweak the BIOS settings in the system set up to speed up memory. SDRAM can usually handle a " CAS Latency" of 2 instead of 3. The "RAS to CAS Delay can also usually take a lower setting. A lower RAS Precharge Time can also speed up the system memory, but could make it unstable. A lower setting for SDRAM Precharge Time could also help but may cause also cause instability. You need to test for stability after each change.

    _________________________________________________________________

I think I am beginning to agree with you about 2000 over XP. I use both every day and for whatever reason, 2000 seems a bit more stable and even faster. But I am all the way into XP on this machine. Too much work to format and reinstall 2000. Maybe future service packs will help. But both are better than 98 wouldn’t you agree?

GOEY, there is a way to have MSCONFIG in windows 2000. You just need a file. Click here: MSCONFIG FOR 2000

Finally - interesting about that picture degradation. What about a program I use called Thumbs Plus? It is similar to ACDSEE but seems to have loads of bells and whistles. It appears that you can do just about anything with it. Also a free download but I like it so much I purchased it. I have a lot to learn about digital photos and how to manage them. But lets start another thread for that some day.

    JR

PS - Datway - are you using Webshots? They do the daily changing screens too. It is a cool and free program. But I like to turn off ALL their automatic features and use it manually. But they sure have an amazing collection, millions I think. Look for them to start charging a fee in the future

  10. I knew about the Print Screen key but I did not know about ALT Print Screen. Thanks. I have always wondered how to do that. But how do you turn the print screen shot into a JPEG?

It appears you are a Win 98 user. with your knowledge, have you ever considered going to Windows 2000 or XP? They're both awesome in my opinion and far superior to 98. If you email me I may have an extra "copy" of Windows 2000 that I could let you "have" for an evaluation if you would like. You can keep it for as long as you want to "evaluate" it.

Also have you considered trying to get rid of a few of those things in your System Tray? They have been known to hog resources. See my two part tip earlier in this thread> It's great information I got from elsewhere on how to determine if each item is even needed and how to turn them off permanently.

  11. I think I am beginning to see why I was drawn to hang around with 9th Corpse most of our last year, forsaking my own 7th spirit in favor of yours. (Plus I was very attracted to Lady McMillan.) They shoulda held me back a year.

  12. Sunesis. Yeah I think I still have my yearbook somewhere around here. If not I will be very disappointed. I want to scan each and every page to preserve it digitally. Otherwise it will fade eventually.

That yearbook was an awesome idea I believe Dana Ranyak had. But I think she was prevented from doing it up right by the freakin Corps Nazi leadership. I am sure she could tell more about that.

Hey, if I can't find my copy could I borrow yours? I promise to take excellent care of it and will return it "better than I found it". (Sorry. WayBrain at work.) I'll also give you a CD containing all the scanned images.

  13. I am glad I didn't say what I REALLY feel about Shannon and how she used to sleep with all of us and other scandals.

Well...we did...remember when we would do a twig sleepover only to have to get up at 5:30am (oh nevermind)

Shannon! How the hell are you! How many times you lightened the pressures of in res with your positive outlook and especially that huge loud laugh of yours. If I recall, you were an Okie weren't you? Please post on here. Your hubby can show you how or just pop in and say hi under his name.

It's easier to stay in touch with folks on a forum than it is one on one in my opinion. I think the internet is amazing. (I have become an easily amused geek.)

In case you are reading this, FYI, we stayed in The Way until 2000. Isn't that a hoot? But I stayed a nice guy all along. Really. I never was hardhearted and never shunned people. Probably why we were finally kicked out in 2000.

Other than that I became a window washer like a lot of us did except I kinda stayed with it:

    Bay Area Window click here

Damn! I've been here ever since we graduated!

Take care Shannon, and please send me a pic of your family.

  14. You should know how to open a monitoring tool called Task Manager so you can view what kind of usage you CPU is getting when you are using certain tasks. (This is for XP & NT, & 2000 users).

    To open it:

    Hold down Ctrl+Alt+Del, or

Hold down Shift+Ctrl+Esc, or · Right-click an empty spot down on the Windows Taskbar and pick Task Manager

Once Task Manager is running, click on the Performance tab. You'll see a live meter of your CPU usage, plus a rolling log of usage history. Cool, but you probably already knew about that.

    Here's a trick I bet you didn't know.

Double-click on the label "CPU Usage" or "CPU Usage History." (In fact, you can double-click just about anywhere in the upper part of the dialog box.) All of Task Manager's menus and tabs disappear, and you're left with a simple, resizable box that includes the CPU meter and the usage log.

    From that point you can:

Click and drag the corners to re-size this unobtrusive dialog box.

Click on the box and drag it to a new location.

Double-click the box to bring back the original Task Manager.

If you've ever wondered why your system wasn't responding, a quick glance at this unobtrusive version of Task Manager may well tell the tale.
