Music And Plants - How To Use Music To Improve Plant Growth The classic book The Secret Life of Plants by Peter Tompkins and Christopher Bird documents many scientific, statistically-significant studies done on the fascinating relationship between sound and music and plants. The right sounds can produce tremendous improvements in growth, and the wrong sounds can do just the opposite. Plants are more aware of their surroundings than we think, probably much more so than us! Here, I just want to give you a taste of what some researchers have observed with respect to plants and music, and sound and plants. This has direct implications for organic gardening. Music And Plants Colorado Dorothy Retallack did many controlled greenhouse experiments with different genres of music and plants. She found after 2 weeks, plants physically leaned 15 to 20 degrees towards a radio playing classical and jazz music, while they scramble to grow away from rock music and become sick. Marigolds “listening” to rock music died within 2 weeks, whereas those in the classical music room 6 feet away were flowering. But by far the most noticeable positive reactions were to classical Indian music for plants. A researcher in India also had success with Indian music... India T.C. Singh, head of the department of botany at Annamalai University, did many experiments with Indian plants and music, with amazing results. Eventually, he stimulated rice harvests that were from 25-60% higher than average, and nearly 50% higher for peanuts and tobacco. Experiments were done on many other plants and had “proven beyond any shadow of doubt that harmonic sound waves affect the growth, flowering, fruiting, and seed-yields of plants”. Illinois George Smith, skeptical botanist and agricultural researcher, planted corn and soybeans in separate greenhouses under controlled conditions and began to experiment with music and plants. In one greenhouse, he played George Gershwin's “Rhapsody in Blue” 24 hours a day, producing thicker, greener plants that weighed 40% more for corn and 24% more for soy. He went on to produce amazing corn harvests using ear-splitting continuous notes at high and low pitches. Sound And Plants Ottawa Two researchers at the University of Ottawa did trials with high-frequency vibrations in wheat. Plants responded best to a frequency of 5000 cycles a second. They were baffled and could not explain why audible sound had nearly doubled wheat harvests. Canada Peter Belton, researcher for Canada's Department of Agriculture, controlled the European corn-borer moth by broadcasting ultrasonic waves. 50% of the corn was damaged in the control plot, and only 5% in the plot with sound. The sound plot also had 60% fewer larvae and was 3” taller on average. New York George Milstein found that a continuous low hum at 3000 cycles per second accelerated the growth of most of his plants and even caused some of them to bloom six full months ahead of their normal schedule. Conclusion Of course, many people think this is all bologni, especially when it comes to plants responding to music. Scientists often think it is possible, but that it must all be happening purely because of “physics” and not because plants prefer Debussy to Dylan. It is romantic to think of plants having a taste more for the “intellectual” music, and I strongly believe this relationship between plants and music is possible after all of my studies into the amazing world of plants, but in terms of music, I don’t know enough to argue one way or the other. Plants Respond to Music Did you know that your plants respond to music the same as human beings do? It has been proven scientifically through many experiments that plants thrive on music, though there are some who do not agree with the theory. Gardeners, however, have no doubt that fading flowers get a new lease of life by music and flowers blossom in their fullest glory listening to music. In 1973, Dorothy Retallack’s book The Sound of Music and Plants based on scientific experiments created ripples. Retallack began her experiment at the Colorado Women’s College in Denver. Using three separate laboratories containing the same species of plants, Retallack began her experiment. Piping in different types of music to each facility, she recorded the daily growth of each plant. The results were quite surprising. The plants in the laboratory where music was played daily for three hours a day grew twice as large and became twice as healthy as those in a music-free environment. On the other extreme, plants in the laboratory where music was played for eight hours a day died within two weeks of the start of the experiment. Dorothy Retallack tried experimenting with different types of music. She played rock to one group of plants and, soothing music to another. The group that heard rock turned out to be sickly and small whereas the other group grew large and healthy. What’s more surprising is that the group of plants listening to the soothing music grew bending towards the radio just as they bend towards the sunlight. This experiment encouraged many individuals and organizations to exercise the act of playing music to plants. These connoisseurs of music warn you about the sort of music that you play. The plants will grow better if you play soft soothing music of old era instead of loud rock music of Gen X. The noisy rock music will only make the plants grow feeble and sick. Preferably, play Mozart, Bach, or Beethoven to make your plant grow better. Another important point that we can pick up from Retallack’s experiments is the duration of music. If you are keen on playing music to your plants, keep the time limit to be about three hour. This will make the plants grow healthy and properly. Jan Hus) is regarded to be one of the earliest known religious thinkers and reformers in the world. A philosopher and a Master at Charles University (Prague), Huss was greatly influenced by the writings and teachings of John Wyclife. He made a number of followers during his time, who came to be known as Hussites. Reformers, in the later years, looked up to Huss for his unswerving commitment in the face of the church's cunning brutality, due to which he had to face extreme consequences. Condemning Hus' uprising, the Church first excommunicated him and then burned him to death, in an unfair trial. Rise to Fame Huss, along with other Bohemian leaders, initiated a decree; according to which Bohemian nation had to have three votes and the foreign nations were to have one vote. This verdict led to the evacuation of many doctors, masters and students from Prague University, in 1409, resulting in the formation of the University of Leipzig. With this, Prague University lost its international repute and turned into a Czech school. The news of the Bohemian heresy spread throughout Europe, thus isolating Archbishop Zbynìk Zajíc. John Huss attained became the rector of the Czech university. Problems With Church A reformer, John Huss condemned various church abuses in his sermons, leading to serious problems between him and the church. Huss directed his thoughts to the faulty disciplines and practices of the church. He discarded the practice of reserving the chalice from the laity, during Holy Communion, for the priest. He whole-heartedly accepted the practice of worshipping in the Czech language, rather than in Latin, by the masses. John Huss argued that the lay man also had an important role to play in the administration and leadership of the Church and that Christ was the true head of the Church, not the Pope. His argument that Church officials should exercise spiritual authority, instead of being earthly governors, contributed to the cause of his excommunication, for insubordination, in 1412. Excommunication of Huss Alexander V authorized the Archbishop to give up all the books of John Wycliffe, cancelled his doctrines and ceased his free preaching. Though Huss argued in favor of Wycliffe, all his arguments and wiles went unheard. To cap it all, Huss and his adherents were excommunicated. However, this did not stop Huss or his adherents. With the government on his side, he continued to preach in the Bethlehem Chapel and his power increased. Huss became fearless in his allegations against the Church, Indulgence and Huss After the death of Pope Alexander V, a crusade against indulgence started, of which Huss was also a part. Huss delivered a speech in 1412, which is said to be directly taken from the last chapter of Wycliffe's book, De ecclesia, and his treatise, De absolutione a pena et culpa. He argued that no Pope or Bishop had the right to raise a sword in the name of Church. Huss was of the opinion that man attained forgiveness only by repentance. His followers burnt the Papal bulls and believed that Huss' sayings should be adhered, to rather than that of Church. Arrest of Huss The Pope ordered the Cardinal of St. Angelo to advance against Huss. Imposed under the great church ban, Huss was seized and delivered to the archbishop. Even his chapel was destroyed. In retaliation to such cruelties, Huss appealed that Jesus Christ, and not the Pope, was the supreme judge. Though he was forced to leave the Prague by Wenceslaus, his exodus did nothing to lessen the excitement that had built already. Council of Constance A council was set up in 1414, at Constance, with the aim to put an end to papal schism and reform the Church. John Huss gladly joined the council to put an end to all oppositions. It is evident from the sermons he carried that he went with the motive of converting the assembled fathers to his own principal doctrines. For the meeting, the Emperor Sigismund of Luxemburg assured John Huss of safe conduct, apart from his safety for the duration of journey. Taking the words of the King, Huss set off for the journey. Imprisonment & Preparations for Trial A day before the council was to assemble, Huss reached Constance. Upon his arrival, it was announced that Michal z Nìmeckého Brodu would be Huss' opponent. While, initially, Huss stayed at the house of a widow, later on, rumors spread that he was about to flee and as a result, he was sent into the dungeon of the Dominican monastery. Though the prosecution witness was heard, Huss was not allowed to even appoint an advocate for his defense. After the downfall of the antipope, Huss was taken to the castle of Archbishop of Constance, Gottlieben on the Rhine. Apart from being poorly fed, he was also chained day and night. Husss was isolated from his friends and followers and was tortured by disease. Trial At the trial, Huss was charged with thirty-nine sentences, out of which twenty-six had been excerpted from his book on the Church, seven from his treatise against Páleè and six from the treatise against Stanislav ze Znojma. However, in return, Huss maintained just one argument that he would renounce himself, if his errors were proven to him from the Bible. He asked for a fair trial and some time, so that he could prove his views. Though there were several attempts to make him recant his words and views forcefully, Huss resisted all of them. Death An Italian clergyman pronounced the sentence of condemnation for Huss. Even at that time, he said that he would only be convinced once he has been given proof from Holy Scriptures. As a result, he was enrobed in priestly vestments and asked to recant. Still, he refused. At this, all his ornaments were taken and his priestly tonsure was destroyed. Huss was deprived of all rights and was delivered to the secular powers. A high paper hat, with the word 'Haeresiarcha' inscribed on it, was placed on his head and he was taken away by armed men. At the execution ground, Huss spread his hands and prayed aloud. After undressing him, the executioners tied his hands behind his back with ropes. His neck was tied, with a chain, to a stake around which wood and straw had been piled up, in such a way that it covered him up to the neck. The sounds that you make in your life span are traveling through the universe right now. In space they say the earth to moon and back still can be view in deep space because are in wave form that does not die. If they would make a smoking ban on anybody under the age of 18 they would be in their rights but there no understanding for people that have been smoking five year to hundred years. Unless they understand that would be cruel and unusual punishments inflicted by them. So people of our government are being cruel to the people that smoke by making a bill that has no understanding at all which I have today even that I not smoke and never had. I understand what it is to have your rights not respected I was hit in the bathroom with about six holding me and hit the bathroom and pick my whole life. I was even rape in first grade and again in eight grade because a girl classmate had good words about me so the boys try take my pant off and the girls try to take her pant off. If that not cruel to me and unusual punishments inflicted on me and girl I do not what is maybe I did not rape the girl but I was rape by my classmates and the girl was too. Yes, laws should be made so this never happen again I am so destroyed in life that I want to die every second of the day. It is unique among the 27 amendments of the U.S. Constitution for being the only one to have been ratified by state ratifying conventions.” Prohibition was not wrong but it done with no understanding so today we can drink all we want but we cannot smoke. Prohibition made a lot of people rich but the wrong got rich which cause it down fall but if was done with understanding it still in the Constitution today. Just like this smoking ban today it will failed because there no understand for the people of this USA.
