  1. It should have been a simple thing. GT moved everything onto the new site earlier in the week. And the transfer was fairly transparent until I realized I hadn't updated one file at Godaddy, when Garth notified me saturday morning.

We changed the NS server before noon. The propagation takes about 24 hours to complete. The larger Hosts update their DNS servers hourly and some of the smaller Yeehaw hosts only do it once a day. About 40 or 50% seemed to be fine (Of the folks that I spoke with) The rest should have been able to get in by Sunday.

Well for whatever reason, Godaddy didn't finish the process on Saturday (Office party probably). They notified me about 1pm today that it had been finished. Basically that is when they heard back from all the NS servers around the globe.

So that's it, George in a nutshell. I figured the reason that you weren't here is that you got in an early line for the Green Hornet or something else Green.

  2. Someone called me tonight wondering what time this place is closing tonight. NOT tonight. We have a few months left and maybe more if necessary.

Happy New Years to all. I have to get up bright and early in 4 hours or so, so I am going to hit the bed.

    THE

And let us add, on the evening the CES board shut down, which was what I was trying to say in the THE thread int he first place.

You probably need to explain what CES was

  3. I think you should just go with a Forum.

    A Forums advantage would be....

    ONE place to find everything

Topics can be pinned and closed if you want to make a Read only Statement or Policy Statement or Way Archives

The Blogs would be in one place similar to a forum.

    THE

THE was the viral thread on Waydale.

Started by Rafael on the Evening that GreaseSpot Cafe premiered. 4/21/2000

EZboard demanded that it be shut down, too many posts on one thread.

Took many emails to convince extwi to split it and continue it.

    I was Casey Kasem.

  4. One of the things that I explored, without success, was a blog section on a site. I tried it two different ways. A separate site as well as integrating it within these forums.

Let me explain what I think as distinct advantages over the forum. If someone wants to tell their story, they can do it uninterrupted. In the forums, when someone takes that chance of telling the story, there is always someone that wants to thwart the story in one form or another. In the blog scenario, the person telling their story has control over all of the comments. You can publish or delete any and all comments. In a thread situation, the story can get lost with comments and off topic replies.

I believe that an individual's testimony to what happened is vital for themselves as well as for others reading it. I would be more than willing to keep the blog section active on this site, if some would be willing to try it out.

    Any opinions?

  5. Well now that everyone has had a few weeks to ponder the closing of Greasespot Cafe. I've been able to come up with a better timeline. I figured that the initial shock has sunk in. I couldn't think of an easier way to do the whole thing. It is very overwhelming for me as I have invested many years to keep this running. But I need to focus on things in my life.

I want everyone to know that I won't leave the community high and dry. The next steps involve figuring out what the community needs and how to get that up and running. GT has been moving everything on the server to a new server and most of that is out of the way.

With the donations in the past few weeks, I can keep everything running until the end of February. I am going to start a new forum in here that will focus on what everyone thinks is needed. All current members can be involved.

I've sent an email out to all registered members letting them know of the closing. Hopefully, we will see some old faces celebrate the countdown.

After the end of February, Greasespotcafe.com will be a ready only site. The forums will be read only. I think that there is a lot of valuable information to be culled. I am considering some type of simple site or addon to GSC that will allow posting of email info for exchange with each other, along the lines of the Cortright page. Totally volunteer with ability for people to email you if you are on the list without giving out your email address, so that you can decide who you want to give your email to you.

As a static site, any links to the forum, should work. I will be deleting some threads along the way, mostly in the political forum. I may even just delete the entire thing. So you should start copying now if you have anything that you want to save.

  6. Pawtucket,

I did not respond to your comment two years ago, because it seemed to me at the time to do so might lead rather quickly to the deletion of this thread. Responding to your post, however, was never so much a question of will I or won't I as it was question of when.

I did NOT insinuate I had any post deleted because I was promoting a website at GSC. I indicated in my post that my then-recent inclusion of my website's URL in my signature line and under my avatar was a precautionary action I was taking due to my possible suspension from GSC. A thoughtful reader should have inferred that my announcement of my website followed (rather than preceded) some situation that existed between one or more GSC moderators and me.

For everyone's information, the situation was that Modgellan had issued me my "one warning that casting aspersions on a moderator WILL result in suspension of your posting privileges," after I had quipped that a moderator who had deleted an exchange I had with Rocky and Garth in the Politics forum was a "functionally codependent moderator."

Two years after the fact, you have decided to say something about an item that I don't think anyone remembers. Gathering your thoughts?

  7. I know it is a twi, but you were invited by either the bride or groom. It will hopefully be the only wedding that they have in their life. Think about them in your decision. Wedding day is special wherever it is held.

That said, always be carrying a glass of red wine.

I will send you a list of people that you could "accidently" trip and spill it on.

  8. I remember that. But someone else, who is a squirrel, so we can't mention his name, one night decided to go in and do sounds non-stop for hours. I got home and the cats were going nuts hearing all these animal sounds. I had no idea where the sounds were coming from until I went to my computer and saw the other white meat doing one sound after another. It was late and I think I just told him to shut up, there may have been some other words in there to spice up the conversation.

  9. The first incarnation of the website was going to be a newspaper format called something to the effect of "The Greasespot After Midnight Gazette" And the first article to grace the front page was written by Groucho.

The second incarnation, pam and I spend hours on the phone trying to think of a byline or whatever you call it. All of a sudden, she comes out with "Midnight has come and gone" We both knew that that was it. The site was basically just a forum in the first year. On the first anniversary of GS, the new site was unveiled. That April had been traumatic for me, I had a breakup at the beginning of the month, then a week before the site was to be unveiled, my house burned down. I was renting it out at the time. So I flew quite a bit that month from northern CA to Socal. One of the weekends, I flew to see pamsandiego so that we could finalize the site. I remember she was house sitting that had a parrot or parakeet named Fred or something like that.

I'll never forget the night of the unveiling, we had to do it AFTER midnight, it was soo much fun and so exciting.

The latest incarnation was designed by pamsandiego, rich (who is first a friend of pams and then we became friends and he is NBW) and myself. I wanted a classic 50's diner look. We took a long time before going with what we did. Rich is a Photoshop Wizard. The chrome across the top behind the logo was taken by Rich on the side of those old fashioned stools with red tops. And if you look very closely, you can see pam's cat zephyr in the chrome.

The square patterned chrome was a photo that Rich took of the lunch truck where he works..

  10. I am acquiring a VPS which will be less expensive. GS will still be open, including the forums. The forums will be read only.

Let's toss an idea around. I added blogs to this site a few years back. They were used very little. That said, one of the most frustrating parts of the forums, is someone telling their story, pouring out their heart and some jerk coming in and call them liars or other things. A blog would give someone a chance to tell their story. Each person would have control of the comments section leave the comments up or not publish them. reply or don't reply. In my opinion, this would keep someone's story in one place, not strewn in a long thread. And would make moderation minimal.

  11. Facebook is notorious for severing connections. I think assuming that someone blocked you, is premature. I would check facebook settings. I found out that closing the little GSC button on my page kicked me out.

  12. Sorry Sunesis,

You weren't even close in the hated list, now the pita list is another story!

The most hated were the ones that preyed on peoples' emotions and used them for their morbid fun. They would take on a screenname and build a fictional life around it over a period of months. Then prey on an individual gain their trust and do some horrendous real life crap. I've never tried to figure out the number, but there were at least 3 different people that did this, humiliating an innocent party. Those were the ones that would make that list. In fact, I think one of them is an active member right now.

So if you wonder why I jump at troll-like behaviour, that is why. I have little tolerance for that kind of behaviour
