  1. I am so thankful that I entered nursing as a profession more than 20 years ago. Not certain if I chose nursing or it chose me - but I have been able to work in such a variety of settings. Started as an aide and now am a nurse practitioner. Just this month I accepted a position as a nursing instructor - totally new role for me! Funny thing is that I have always been an "adult learner" - I have always been one of the oldest in whatever class I am in. My life is marked by being an old novice - a life long learner, slightly out of step with my contemporaries. It is not always comfortable - but I am sooooo glad that I never have considered myself to be too old to do something new. My advice? Read and re-read, "Let Your Life Speak" by Parker Palmer - It encourages listening and responding to the inner call vs the outer call. I have learned to honor who I am instead of trying to be someone Im not (no matter how noble). Check out Peter Block's book, "Stewardship" and learn to "Choose Adventure over Security" - Scary at times, but I have never been disappointed in the long run. Consider failure as an option to consider another choice - Failure used to scare me. Now I know that it isn't necessarily lethal. Maybe after I actually start as a classroom instructor I'll have more sobering advice. For now I am happy to do something that I think could be the job I am supposed to to for the next few years, instead of the job that paid better and was certainly more prestigious. Best regards for your journey EBN ps Still get to be a nurse practitioner 2 days/week - doesn't get better than that!

    Cheap Gas

We live in Western New York, specifically the 2nd poorest city in the US (Buffalo) and the gas here is the HIGHEST in the continental US. We are at our lowest prices in months - 2.12-2.19 for regular. After years of lame excuses, our US rep announced Friday that the retailers are getting the almost twice the profit they get outside our zone. What a rip.
  3. Have to say thanks to those I do not know for things that I now love. Wish I could remember who mentioned/suggested the following - they are now wonderful parts of my life. 1) Parker Palmer's book "Let Your Life Speak" 2) Madeline L'Engle's books, "The Rock that is Higher" and "Walking on Water" 3) Spike Seasoning. I always find something here - and for that I say thank you.
  4. I was flying from Buffalo NY to Salt Lake City (via Dallas Fort Worth) to present at a meeting of patient educators. I love to fly and the morning was perfect. At app 0850, the steward came to the cabin and announced that we would need to "bring the plane down in Little Rock AK" My friend and co-worker pressed him for more information and all that he would say was that we were being instructed to land - there was no trouble with the plane. I asked my friend if the president was in Texas at the time. Could not help but believe it involved a high level threat. When we landed on the tarmac, they informed us that the WTC was hit, and while we waited we got word that the second plane crashed. When we walked through the airport approximately an hour later, it was like a tomb. Totally vacated. The walkway was cordoned off and all of the phones were hanging off the hook. I'll never forget the detail of the phones hanging. We were able to get a motel room. The people of Little Rock are very gracious. I walked in the evening by myself to a downtown church that was open for prayer. One of the church members recognized I was a newcomer and drove me to my motel when the service concluded. There was no way home for two days. We finally spotted a U-Haul and the three of us (middle aged women) drove a U-Haul from Little Rock to Buffalo. One ticket along the way in TN for speeding - I drive as fast as I talk and we talked alot.... When we arrived in Buffalo - pulled into the lot with our U-Haul at the Olive Garden near the airport, they locked the doors out of fear - everyone expected another bomb in a rented truck. They unlocked them when the three of us piled out. I was thankful to be home, thankful that before I left that I had made a special point to kiss each kid and my husband. I remain thankful for each day of my life.

    Help

For what it is worth - Depending upon the size of the city/county your folks live in, there may be some assistance and guidance through their "Agencies on Aging". Many counties have resources and specialists dedicated to senior citizens. You can check the government listings in the phone book. I would strongly encourage a call to your parents physician. While the office may not be able to discuss their care (unless they have provided consent) it is likely that the health care provider would be interested and may be able to facillitate a family meeting. Kind regards.
  6. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbysP-9AryQ I am not certain if I have cut and pasted this correctly. This was fun to watch. If you are unable to access via the link above, entering "Bill Gates video" onto the You Tube site will take you right there. Hope you enjoy.
  7. Today is the day! Fans who could not get tickets have the option of watching in the HSBC arena - or at home in their jammies. They will interrupt the 3rd period to switch goal ends to give equal advantage - counting on a stiff wind with some gusts about that time. Catch it on NBC, CBC or the NHL network. Happy new year. Long live hockey.
  8. respnding to the chocolate in the chili sideline I always add unsweetened chocolate (comes individually wrapped in squares for baking) to my chili. I also use strong black coffee to increase the liquid. In my way of thinking, it is a matter of adding (2) new beans to the mix and doesn't seem odd at all.
  9. I feel so silly asking this, but I could not hear/understand what the player said to the coach at the end (think his name is Jerry). Can someone help me out? thanks!
