Even on completely-full discs like the Lord of the Rings DVDs, it compresses down to 4.7GB extremely well. If you put them in one after the other and stand next to the screen, you can see the copy is a little bit "softer", but if you go sit back on the sofa, it's almost impossible to tell you're watching a recompressed video.

Plus, the copies are not copy-locked like DVD Xcopy, so if you break your original, you can still backup off the backup.

GFO: Is there a reason to be so dismissive? I'm just curious as to why you'd bring this up here, as opposed to the anything-goes JWO site. I can only speculate, of course, but if your avatar is a self-portrait, then you're probably in your mid- to late-thirties, which, if you were an American, would lead me to guess that given the nature of this thread, you're currently single. As to whether it springs more from curiosity, loneliness, or just plain horniness, that's a bit more difficult to deduce.

Curiosity? From the general level of intelligence exhibited in your other posts, it's extremely unlikely that you're looking to learn anything about sex itself, so that works against curiosity in that regard. Curiosity about our particular habits? Apparently that one's already been asked and answered, but the title of the thread invites more of a discussion than a simply-answered question. Curiosity's not looking so good on those fronts.

Horniness? Well, seeing as how 99.5% of our posters are anywhere from 14 to 17 hours behind Melbourne, that might pose a difficult scheduling problem, seeing how midnight there is 10am yesterday here on the East Coast. Possible, I suppose, but logistically difficult.

Loneliness? Hardest to gauge. Surely there are plenty of folks on the other site willing to engage you in conversations on just about any subject, although you might just be a bit tired of the same old chat-buddies. The over 30/single guess is the strongest evidence for concluding loneliness. Still nothing concrete, though.

I don't think you can get Xcopy Platinum any more due to the litigation. DVD Shrink is still available as freeware. You need an external burning program like Nero, but DVD Shrink will re-compress DVD-9 movies to fit onto a DVD+/-R/RW 4.7GB disc. It will also let you ditch alternate language soundtracks, extras, etc. Works nice to make archival backups of your expensive storebought kids' movies so they don't scratch up the original DVDs.

What gives?

It's one of the problems stemming from the decay of our society. The trust that parents and teachers could once put into each other has dwindled to near nothing. Teachers can't trust parents to take the time to reinforce proper social behavior, let alone ensure that homework is completed satisfactorily. Parents don't trust teachers to exercise necessary discipline, so the power to control unruly children is gone. Schools have not gotten any better since corporal punishment was removed, in fact, the problems are getting worse. The social experiments of the 60s and 70s were not all good ideas. In fact, few were. "New math" was only a cute example. It was nothing compared to the disservice wrought by "political correctness" and absurd "self-esteem" building measures.

The pay for teachers is so low relative to the cost of living that the majority of people drawn to the profession are either idealists or incompetents. That wouldn't be so bad, except that it seems the ratio of the latter to the former is above 1:1! Add to that those who rise to school management usually come from the incompetent side, and the good teachers are few, far between, grossly underpaid, undersupported, and colossally underappreciated.

Tom: In a nutshell, the network card in your computer can see every data packet that flies across the cable, it only catches those addressed to it. Usually. Some cards can be put into "promiscuous mode" and capture every single packet, regardless of the intended destination computer.

Now, since Wi-Fi access is just like Ethernet without the wires, if you go to a public hotspot, every other computer in the restaurant/hotel/airport is on the same network as you are, so you can "sniff" their packets right out of the air, too.

Now, the Wi-Fi connection should be encrypted so no one else but you can read your packets, but many places don't have the encryption protocol turned on because of the tech support headaches in trying to give every customer the right encryption key for the network. Most sites encrypt passwords, but many don't, and if you use the same username and password for many sites, all a sniffer has to do is catch you using it one place and simply snoop around until he finds some interesting site you visit.

That's one way how you wind up on the Citibank identity fraud commercials.

It's yet another classic example of lowering the bar. The states get to define the pass/fail criteria for a school--how fudged up is that?

Georgia recently announced a large percentage increase in the number of elementary school students who passed the state test for that grade, but then refused to reveal what a passing score was. It was eventually discovered that the passing grade was less than 50%.

If your kids don't succeed, make the test easier! Lower your standards! Just don't discipline them, 'cuz it might make them feel bad, and don't help the teachers out because the money is better spent on Jumbo-Trons for the high school football stadium...

I think lawyers and teachers should swap salaries.

One of the problems with TWI was that they felt they constantly had to come up with "new research". While some things were sorely-needed clarifications (Jesus Christ Our Promised Seed) some were just ridiculous stretches indicative of too much research for iconoclastic novelty's sake (Athletes of the Spirit, pretty much anything by Martindale). Sometimes I think that Schoenheit has fallen into the same trap.

imbus: Not as much as you'd think. Breasts and fatty tissues are heavy, so they will tend to sag as the skin loses its elasticity. A man's genitalia, all jokes aside, aren't all that heavy in comparison, and since they're covered by the same skin, what might not be firm enough anymore to hold up a sagging butt can still manage to hold the shape of less-massive organs.

The "bragging rights" thing is relative, too. There is no standard relationship between the size when soft and size when erect. In other words, one fellow's might be 5" when soft, but only grow to be 5.5" when erect. Another might be 3" when soft, but 7" when erect. The first guy might be ahead in the locker room, but it's the second guy's wife who really comes out ahead on the deal. It has to do with different men having different levels of elasticity in the erectile tissues.

How happy I'd be? Are you nuts? The only non-Christians I absolutely don't want here are those who have to get their jollies by abusing Christians.
