  1. Sorry, Sprawled, but I would have to disagree. I've seen lots of changes in usage in my 20+ years as an editor/copy editor, but it is still incorrect to use "they" with a singular antecedent.

i get it, linda. i'm usually a stickler for these things, but when what's "right" is so awkward (i always trip over "he or she"), i'm happy to see an evolution in what's acceptable. but i'm an ADVERTISING copywriter--and you know how loosey-goosey we are!

I'm still trying to recover from "impact" as a verb

gee, i thought impact was always a verb. (just fyi, the American Heritage Dictionary says "Impact has been used as a verb since 1601, when it meant 'to fix or pack in,' and its modern, figurative use dates from 1935.") but when you talk about nouns turning into verbs, "task" has become my favorite hate: "I've been tasked with this responsibility." man, that one bothers me.

  2. Sorry, Belle. I couldn't resist.

    George

actually, george, both are accepted usage today. (i'm a copywriter, and have been 'round and 'round on these two--and many others! welcome to the 21st century.)

  3. Hiya sprawled out. :)

Perhaps an *assumption* was made about *folks like you all*, but I'm thinking it was a valid one.

Given the track record that GSC posting has concerning CES, it's not hard to discern.

Personally -- I think it was an accurate statement/ observation.

Not trying to denigrate what you said --- but it doesn't take a rocket scientist

to figure out where most of GS posters stand, concerning CES. ;)

the assumption is that "folks like me" are only interested in finding fault. so it's a bs assumption, especially since billy d doesn't know ME from a rock. the truth is, i had no particular bone to pick with ces until all this stuff happened--i wasn't involved with them, and didn't want to be, but i wasn't against them in any way (though i knew enough about them to know they aren't my cup of meat).

if ces were to truly come clean and ask their people (not outsiders--i don't think they owe us anything) for forgiveness, i'd be the first to applaud them. the problem is, folks like me know that ain't about to happen. and that especially ticks off folks like me, because we know that the original bylaws of the group that became ces were specifically designed to make anyone in a leadership role accountable to the people they serve. and they have obviously subverted that original intent.

folks like me hate that kind of thing.

  4. You may say that ongoing litigation isn't a valid excuse for being tight lipped. Perhaps you'd have a different opinion if you were the one on the other end of the lawsuit. Guess we'll never know.

"excuse" is the operative word, here, billy. if it ain't one excuse, it's another. and it's all bs to me. there's plenty that could be said without fear of legal repercussion. but they won't say it--not openly, publicly--because they still operate within a twi-like mindset, no matter what they say or think. and this behavior is proof. trust me, it is NOT what was intended when ces (or more precisely, its predecessor) started.

if the folks at CES/STF accounted, asked forgiveness and treated people with love from this point forward (as much as is humanly possible, at least!!!), would folks like you let it go, or would you look for something else to harp on? I wonder.

you like making assumptions about "folks like [me]," don't you, bill? you don't even know me! but the truth is, we'll never have to worry about it, because they won't do any of the above. if they were gonna, they would've by now.

  5. I still got most of my accent and I refrain from saying (ugh!), "Y'all"

    Does that help???

Sprawled - maybe you can send my a slice from Ray's down in the Village???? :biglaugh: :biglaugh: :biglaugh: I need to renew my Yankee strength!

you know, i just took my kids to Famous Joe's on carmine st. what a disappointment! i get better pizza in sayville...though NOTHING compares to that slice i had at my father's cousin's pizza joint in brooklyn....sitting at the counter, the windows all steamed up...mmmmmmm.

  6. I'm sorry, I was too busy making a pizza WITHOUT FRUIT TOPPINGS to understand what you were talking about.....

i hate to tell you, dooj, but the fact that you refer to them as "toppings" means you've been in texas too long! pizza doesn't have "toppings." yes, you can put stuff on it, but they ain't toppings. (in good ol' new york, the question--if there IS any question at all, which there usually isn't--would be "do you want anything on it?" not "which toppings would you like?")

i lived in texas and in washington state (gee, i wonder how i ended up there?!), so i know what you've been exposed to. i just wanted to point out that, as much as you may have tried to defend against it, you've been infected. :P

  7. Oddly the x-way site idea was a mistake, initially. Little known but true fact - the original concept for the site was to be an "x-RAY" site, and intended as a service for dental technicians.

    ba-dum-bum

but seriously, i don't get no respect...

  8. It's wishful thinking. ;)

ah. well, my knowledge is pretty limited, but i don't know of any 11th who are still in. though i know a few who might as well be!

out there--HIT BY A TREE BRANCH AND WOKE UP TWO DAYS LATER? are you all right? what is your doctor saying? (and how do you get hit by a tree branch?) hope you're feeling better!

  9. Most of us 11th were smart enough to leave before the manure hit the spreader...

do you know that for a fact? i mean, i hope you're right, but i'm wondering what that statement is based on.

  10. How does one regain their self-esteem, their sense of self-worth, confidence in making our own decisions, taking care of ourselves, asking for help when we need it? How do you / did you get back to the "real you"?

belle, are you asking this question for yourself, or just because you're curious?

because if you're asking for yourself, it seems to me that the real YOU is all over these threads. smart, sassy, funny, sweet...all i've ever seen in your posts is a very real--and fully realized--woman. take a look for yourself. i think you've gotten back more than you might think!

  11. That album was a crash test dummy...

gee, johniam, you sure say a lot for someone who doesn't know what he's talking about.

first of all, you can find "drug references" in beatle songs before pepper. revolver is loaded with them. ("tomorrow never knows," anyone?) sgt. pepper, on the other hand, has very few. it has a psychedelic feel, absolutely. but other than "i get high with a little help...," "lucy in the sky with diamonds" (which lennon swore wasn't about LSD) and "i'd love to turn you on," there ain't much else that would qualify as a "drug reference."

and you're giving the "suits" way more credit than they deserve. especially as early as '66/'67--they had no clue what was going on.

  12. it seems everyone i know thought she was the best--but apparently everyone i know isn't who votes!

unless, because melinda was certainly not the perfect "american idol" type, it's fixed. or at least, manipulated in some way.

  13. i wish it were a higher resolution pic! but what's funny to me is that if you showed me pics of individuals, i think i'd tell you i went to high school with them. some people just feel like i knew them my whole life.

  14. Look at the photo of us in 11th and F7. My N*cky (N*cole) is in the fifth row back and about the third from the left. (Don't count the ne'er do well leaders in the front row. Anyone know where she is?

    where's the photo?

  15. Suppose that Coco had the power to expose Victor Paul's latent inclinations? That's what might make a man like Victor desperate enough to have the poodle wacked.

The same kind of anxiety probably led to escalation of homo-purges later on, carried on by another unlikely character, who ostensibly dedicated his life to applying the examples of Broadway, ballet, and the Greek games to the "rise and expansion" of the church. Where did he get this stuff? Answer: out of his own head. Majorly gay, folks.

And who is the current president of TWI? No issues there, right?

so you're saying the way is gay?

(i remember back in the mid '80s, when every limb had to come up with a state slogan. massachusetts' was "making the bay state the way state," which always became, to me, anyway, "making the bay state the gay state.")

  16. no, really, i think the 11th corps was a special group of folks. maybe everyone feels that way about the corps they were in. (of course, they'd be wrong, but...) ;)
