  1. in a word---Fat and entitled---they started out 2-10 in April and in September were 7-20, In between those times they had the best record in baseball but were never in shape and the whole year never had any 'fire'. A lot of players mailed it in.

I heard there was no discipline -- players not in the game drinking beer and such. I gotta wonder...where was the "C" man, Jason Varitek? Could it be that he was drinking beer with them?

  2. Soulsearcher, if the God you believe in is not loving, how do you keep from falling into depression and despair? What gives you hope?

I've had depression and despair for much of my life. I tried God (praying, reading the bible, etc.) but it didn't work. Zoloft and psychotherapy work much better, and I'm not being facetious.

My sister-in-law, a born-again Christian, talks about God all the time. It's apparent to me that what she calls "God", I call luck.

Why would an all loving God allow random acts of tragedy to occur?

I've been asking that question for all of my adult life -- and I've never gotten a good answer.

  3. Of course I was never in TWI but...

I don't believe there is a loving god. Certainly not a god who demands to be glorified.

I do believe there is a higher being -- whatever being or entity or force that makes a sperm cell swim up a fallopian tube and fertilize an egg (for example). That's the god I believe in and there's nothing "loving" about it.

  4. (entire 2nd verse):

Don't believe I'm taken in by stories I have heard

I just read the Daily News and swear by every word

And don't think that I'm out of line

For speaking out for what is mine

I'd like to see you do just fine

But look at what you wear

And the way you cut your hair

  5. Okay, here's the next clue. It may be semi obscure. Not sure how big a hit it was, but it's been running through my head for about a week now, so...

    I'm a bookkeeper's son

I don't want to shoot no one

Well I crossed my old man back in Oregon

Don't Take Me Alive! (Steely Dan)

    great song

I think this song is somewhat less obscure...

"While the music played you worked by candlelight"

  6. say hey waysider!! that sure looks like a Ruth's Chris filet with their terrific asparagus and maybe some taters. am i close?? if so, maybe you, me, and the twinks, the ham--ster, soul searcher, jerry the barrax, the opera buff, steve L, frankie123ol, and the cman can meet at one of Ruth's Chris many locations someday...

There's one right here at the Roosevelt Field Mall in Garden City, NY. If any of you are ever in town, give me a holler. :B)

  7. Thanks, waysider.

...So, these evil doings of God in the O.T. were really the doings of the devil but had to be explained in terms that could be understood by people with no spiritual perspective.

Is this related to the "idiom of permission"? I participate in other bible discussion forums and nobody has ever heard of this.

  8. I cant think of any examples in the Gospels or throughout the NT where Jesus, the apostles or christians in general were clamoring for the death penalty or even discussed it.

There is a whole heckuva a lot about forgiveness, grace, mercy, praying for your enemies etc however.

They say that God doesn't change, but the God of the OT certainly behaves differently from the God of the NT.
