  1. I found this tonight while surfing refdesk

The link to the whole article is: Food and Mental Illness

"New reports link mental ill-health to changing diets

News Release, Monday 16 January 2006

As new figures show that mental ill-health is costing the UK almost £100 billion a year, evidence released today by the Mental Health Foundation and Sustain reveals that changes to the human diet in the last fifty years or so could be an important factor behind the major rise of mental ill-health in the UK.

A body of evidence linking the impact of diet on mood and behaviour has been growing for many years. Now scientific evidence, published today, reveals that food can have an immediate and lasting effect upon a person’s mental health and behaviour because of the way it affects the structure and function of the brain.

Significant changes in the way food is produced and manufactured have not only reduced the amounts of essential fats, vitamins and minerals consumed, but have also disturbed the balance of nutrients in the foods eaten. The proliferation of industrialised farming has introduced pesticides and altered the body fat composition of animals due to the diets they are now fed. As a result, the population’s intake of omega-3 fatty acids has decreased whilst the consumption of omega-6 fatty acids has increased. According to the research, this unequal intake combined with a lack of vitamins and minerals is associated with depression, concentration and memory problems."

It is well known within the medical community that exposure to pesticides can cause depression, liver damage, high blood pressure and cancer. A friend of mine last year thanked me for getting the city council to stop daily spraying of Malathion to control mosquitos, her husband died several years ago from cancer which she thinks may have come from him pulling the spray wagon for the city.

  2. When I took over a hotline in '98 I was faced with hundreds of unanswered phone calls and emails a goodly portion of which were sounded alot like that. In fact the email inbox was stuffed with these offers, all coming from Nigeria or close by. I didn't quite know what to do at first but since the org was essentially broke I answered one of them. I asked them to send me a letter from their bank officer detailing the arrangement and for credable bank numbers for all the next few transactions. I never heard back from them for some odd reason.

  3. Belle Said,

Can we do this with the VHS tapes and have everyone drink when the the singing ladies do those stupid arm movements, wanna be dance steps and those ridiculous dip/pivot things with their hips?

When I first saw those movements I was reminded of the EARLY days of television back when Lawrence Welk was in black n white and people were afraid of being themselves on teevee.

  4. The USDA has sent folks through our farmers market several times trying to locate the forbidden cheese. They found none but that was because some of our vendors are old hippies and figured out how to outsmart the man along time ago. What got so Cheech n Chongish about the whole deal was the furtive look in someones face and then the question, "Who's got the cheese man?".

Apparantly California likes to enact laws to protect people from a lack of common sense, other states allow the sale of home grown cheese.

But what I want to know is who cut the cheese and why did they do it while I was standing in the room??

  5. Ahh yes the flying steering column, that could seriously screw up your plans for later that night.

Knowing China's determination to enter this market I'd guess they are putting together a think tank of American trained engineers, a Chiltons Repair Manual and a couple of rusted BMW's to figure out what went wrong.

China's been a pain in the arse to our manufacturing industry for years. They started out making toys for McDonalds and now make tires, textiles, cheap computer chips and a decent supply of what Americans buy while they are shopping the friendly megalomart aisles hand in hand with the dancing smiley face.

China has the momentum in regards to investment cash and the ability to develop or buy technology. They also have a 1 billion man army which can be directed anywhere their leadership should choose provided it makes significant inroads towards human rights openess and democracy.

  6. The last time I ate mutton I was in Ireland many many years ago but I have been wondering what it might taste like under current health regulations and procedures.

I do fondly recall taking the cream to the dairy in Mitchelstown riding on the back of a donkey drawn cart but then I also remember carcases hanging in the window of the butchers shop so I'm guessing times have changed since then ;)

Seriously tho I would like someone to explain to me the meat aging process. My local piggly wiggly likes to sell aged beef but I've heard their standards aren't quite up to snuff.

What is the big thing about aged beef and or fresh lamb? What is going on in there and why do I have to cook some cuts slowly and others quickly? I suspect alot of it has to do with fat content and muscle condition but I could be wrong.

BTW I have just started working up a spaghetti recipe that includes ginger pinapple and hot sausage it kicks arse!

    411

I was quite irked when I noticed that $1.25 charge added for each 411 call I made. I thought to myself isn't that a damnedable rip-off and vowed to use the free phone book they hand out as much as possible but everynownthen I still resort to directory assistance and everynownthen still get ....ed when I see my phone bill. I'm just glad I have no teenagers living at home using those other overpriced "options" like *69, call waiting and three way calling....one month, between one kids *69 another's 3 way calling AND long distance collect calls from a "friend" in jail I ended up with an additional $120 added to my phone bill, needless to say those services were blocked immediately.

  7. Ahh yes the growers school. I have partnered with several local state and regional npo's and government groups to develop a growers school for sustainable agriculture. It is not so much a school at this point as a grant proposal but we should know something by March. It's focus is to give interested growers a good understanding of sustainble and organic practices like cover crops, composting, tractor selection and maintenance, free range chickens, goats and processing. GO has developed the curriculum UGA is providing oversight and the course work itself will be taught by experienced farmers with an emphasis on hands on field work. The farmers have public speaking skills, having hosted several large farm tours last year so we expect good things. A CD and sillybus will accompany the course. I've thought about naming it Power for Abundant Growing or maybe The Way of Abundant Vegetables but I think I like the Growers School name better.

  8. Hi Sharon I'm praying for you too. If things seem shaky and you think it best to be hospitalized I'd definetly do that. It'll help clean your system out and get rid of the fog and cloudy thinking going on inside yer head. I've done inpatient and outpatient recovery work and while the bulk of my sobriety time is on the outside I'm a firm believer in treatment to get sober if you are struggling with staying straight.

  9. WG I remember peering into a hand held magnifying glass at those very stamps you are describing. We had stamps from the British Isles, South America, Russia and many other places

We used some weird kind of mucilage tape to connect the stamps to the pages and had them organized by country.

Gawd only knows what was on that mucilage

  10. Belle I duct taped three filters together to make a shop wide dust collecter prefilter system and I hooked that up to a fan to collect airbourne dust, I also had a 2 horse primary dust collector that ate most of the dust, chips and occasional chunks of wood that I swept into it. In addition, I had a 1/8th horse personal air filtration system that I used while sanding and finishing but it was a pain in the a$$ to use so I mostly didn't. I looked into running central heat into the old house but figured unless it was well insulated it was going to be a waste of my money and time.

Most heating systems are composed of a heating unit, a blower, and duct work to get the hot air from point A to point B, the precise delivery method differs from system to system but overall I'm guessing it's not that hard to figure out nor make adjustements to.
