  1. Just for fun, I'll have to question snopes on this one, and the ag owner explanation. JUST FOR FUN :)

Snopes quotes the guy ... "Our windows will not support the weight of plywood screwed into their frames — neither is there sufficient masonry wall surrounding them for an attachment — therefore our contractor a "good Ag" suggested saving the store from a major cleanup and letting the glass go — it wasn't a difficult decision to make! "

First, before this quote, snopes calls the sheets of OSB "boards", so I think they have no idea.

Second, if the frames didn't support the "plywood", how did they attach it to the inside? If it is somehow attached at top and bottom only, a wind that would break the windows would break the OSB also.

Third, I can understand them not wanting to put holes in their frames, but it sure seems a bunch of sheet metal screws would hold the OSB in place, especially if the weight was born by the ledge. Also, winds would push the boards against the frames on the outside, whereas they would rip right off the screws on the inside, unless they did major construction to bolster the OSB on the inside. If they were going to that much trouble, why not do it on the outside and save $3000 of glass?

Fourth, why don't any of the other hundreds of people that have similiar frames have to put their OSB on the inside?

It wasn't a difficult decision for the guy, but it doesn't seem like the correct decision, either. Unless maybe he had scratched or etched glass that he hoped insurance would replace for him, or he just didn't want to put holes in the frames. Anyway, that's how I see it, and I'm not afraid to be wrong B)

  2. If you would imagine a stream of water from a hose, I'm sure you could see that there could be enough pressure there to force the ball up hill. If enough draft of air existed, why would it not do the same thing?

And no, I expected the ball to spin on an axis as if the axis was E and W on its circumference, not N and S at the poles.

I have no problem if you don't like how I think. But the MJ comment was way out of line. ;) <_<

:P no, I was not the least bit serious, I do like the way you think ... it was just light hearted banter, at least I laughed. :) I guess by the wink you are kidding? Anyway, it was just having fun, OK?

I mean of course if there was enough air blowing it would go uphill, but why would we introduce that into the equation?

I need to see why there would be spin ... maybe I need less wine ?

  3. ... but the friction from the atmosphere would cause the ball to rotate around an axis at it's center - not at it's top or bottom.

It will actually appear to spin around this axis while it slides down the incline. Furthermore the rate of spin and slide will both increase as the ball gets closer to the lower end of the incline.

hmmmm, not at top or bottom, I assume the axis you speak of is parallel to the plane and perpendicular to the slope, in other words, just like it was rolling down WITH friction. I don't DO aerodynamics or fluid mechanics, but without the plane, it seems the air would act equally and cause no spin. The plane would maybe compress air underneath, possibly reducing air pressure under (perpendicular to the plane) the ball but since it is a ball, not a wing, I don't know if there is a net change. I'd guess not.

so maybe the speed it achieves down the slopes is the same as the speed it achieves in freefall.

of course there is another possibility!

IF the ball is the correct size to do so, and IF the incline is steep enough, the ball may not continue to move. Once is starts sliding, the force of the air at it's greatest girth may be large enough to overcome the gravitational force and hold the ball steady.

IF the force of the air moving across the ball is strong enough, the ball my be forced to slide uphill.

Now either I'm missing something here, or you need to be aware that the MJ they sell now is a LOT stronger than in the 70's. :D But really, how can the ball move uphill, unless it has a paraglider attached and a nice updraft?

I'll wait for a certified ME to show up with the correct answers for this and the relativity thingy. I like the thread though.

  4. If your in your futuristic space car at midnight on a very dark night traveling at the speed of light and you turn off your headlights...what will happen? B) B)  <_<

Nothing unusual happens, the lights go off. At least if you are less than the speed of light, everything seems normal. You would supposedly acquire infinite mass AT the speed of light, though I'm not sure that MAKES you light. But relativity says the speed of light is the same for all reference points. So AT the speed of light the lights go off, but time stands still. LOL It means you have infinite mass and there is no time ... you are God :)

    send wine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111 :D

i have some blueberry wine going now

    first time for me

wanna swap if mine comes out ok?

This is my 3rd time, but I don't put a lot of effort into making it. I just check the sugar and then let it go. I rack once if I get to it lol. I'll see how this batch turns out around spring ... swapping would be fun, but prolly not worth the shipping till we develop our skills. I've learned that the lower quality stuff is not bad mixed with orange or red soda :P

I have about 45 gallons going now. I may try making beer too, one of these days ...

  6. Rhino, you get the Greasespotlitzer Prize for your reporting on this one. Glad you took the time to post what you saw rather than what the networks said you were seeing.

Wow ... I won a prize ... is there cash involved? a trophy? LOL

Thanks laleo ... I spent a lot of time watching CNN for the video, but the commentary often was nothing but story telling. They had a story line and a political agenda, facts be damned.

It's still hard to piece it all together ... the story of the "ghost cops" is interesting and sounds typical of New Orleans. http://www.thedeadpelican.com/COMPASS.HTM

I still haven't seen a real great accounting of what actually happened with all the levees and flood walls.

    http://www.hq.usace.army.mil/cepa/katrina/pumps/pumps.html

When you look at all the breaks there, it seems obvious that the levees were just overwhelmed with a huge surge, apparently from Lake Borgne. I saw an Army Corps guy on one morning saying how a 10 mile stretch of levee was basically wiped out, and it was far beyond anything they had ever expected. CNN never replayed that segment. lol That map doesn't show any breaks in New Orleans East, yet it was flooded.

There was a story about these levees, and how they had "sunk" like 300% to 5000% more than anticipated, and Bush cuts kept them from being maintained, ie. it's Bush's fault. You have to read the fine print to discover that 5000% only made them about a foot, maybe two lower than expected at certain points. Creative jounalism at it's worst.

I think there is more afoot here than sloppy journalism ... A police chief tries to cover his arse with wild stories, the reporters are anxious for their headline, bada bing bada boom. They must have had camera crews in the convention center since they kept showing one or two bodies ... I think many deliberately ignored what they saw and ran with the bigger headline.

It is despicable but not surprising that so many New Orleans officials and the teams they put together proved to be incompetent. At first it seemed good that so many are resigning, but I am somewhat irritated that they are probably walking out more because they don't want to face the mess that they left behind. There are plenty of politicians already snorting up to the trough for that $200 billion though, and public service is pretty far down on their list of priorities.

But the real story is about the majority of people in flooded areas that looked out for their neighbors, manned the pumps, used their fishing boats for rescues, those are the real New Orleans Saints. :)

  7. B)

Thanks folks ... looks like a lot of folks here are right around the half century mark ... Maybe because so many of us spent part of our 20's pursuing our youthful ideals ... and ending up for a time in TWI, during their hay days. (or was it hazed & dazed?) Then for me, somehow another 20 years flew by after leaving that.

About 15 of that I spent cleaning windows, playing volleyball, drinking beer, shooting pool ... not bad overall. Then the mid life change ... back to live near the old home town, build my little place in the country, grow some grapes, make some wine, maybe farmers' market ... God is good :D

It's been good chatting with some of you ... and it will be fun to discuss where people have gone since "escaping" twi. Still a nice long journey lies ahead ...

  8. Hey Nika ...

It's because that picture is 25 years old B)

Well, it is probably five, I'll get one more current sometime, but I look like that still. The trick is to drink beer on a daily basis and stay single, but what fun is that? OK, it was kinda fun ... but I sorta envy you married folks with kiddoes.

I have a fear of heights though, and was terrible at climbing on LEAD ... too lanky I guess.

I've only figured out who Tom Strange and Tom Tuttle are so far, oh, and Simon. But I could be gravely mistaken. I guess I'll get to you other guys eventually. :) Even Igot's pic didn't help.

  9. Google earth says you need a broadband connection. You can google 'microsoft terraserver' for some pretty good satellite imagery also, for us poor dial up users.

The google site says you can even switch to a angled view to give more of a 3D look. Sounds neat.

  10. the 3rd and 5th lowest pressure atlantic hurricanes on record ... so close together ...

I guess the conditions are right ... last year it was Florida getting them ...

hope this one slows down a little

  12. Ha ... well, it is funny, and I laugh too, I'd love to see pics of Craig in a more humble postion. Laughing is good ... icon_smile.gif:)-->

I think the attitude I have is that Craig was a screw up ... I don't worry about praying for him, but the "bless them that persecute you" is more about MY attitude, that the bad guy is not in control of my attitude. It is easy to carry some emotional baggage, and maybe lashing out is a necessary part of the process. I certainly don't want to shove scripture on anyone though .. the philosophy of it is more important to me. Maybe I should clarify that I don't believe the Bible is all truth ... but there is a lot of good stuff in there. Reading back to my last post, that was way too close to "preachy" lol

Maybe my point is that Craig was a greasespot long before he fell from his TWI position. He was probably in major denial, but he definitely had "issues.", as did VPW. It seemed some responses indicated some were still taking it quite personally ... I probably just read into what they were saying.

There is probably still some resentment in my head somewhere too, so lets carry on with the Craig bashing ... though I'd rather have my ABS back, and the 10 years I mostly wasted. Man, now that really IS depressing ... HA!

  13. man ... what happened to "bless them which persecute you" ... ?

I bet LC started with some good intentions, he just got pushed a little further into the ego side than some of us ... well, no excuses, but geeeshh ...

I heard stories about VP feeling very bad about his escapades with women, maybe like cocaine addiction ... I'm not sure. Craig got fat for awhile, I bet he knew he was off base ... but that he never changed is his own fault ...

Anyway, if you still believe there is a just God, then let Him deal with LC ("LC, you got some esplainin' to do!" lol) I spose some brutal remarks are a fun release of hostility though, so what the hell ...

If you don't believe there is a just God, then LC had a pretty good gig going on ... as did VP ... old guy gettimg young girls ... man

Anyway, time to let go of the hate ...those that got used and abused are hopefully wiser now ... it is sota funny to think of old Craig hitting on some girls while they are excercising though ... surely someone could get some video of him... icon_smile.gif:)-->

Just some one glass of wine thoughts ...

    Cowgirl

The tiny dremel things are the smallest for tiny stuff, but for your work seems a little small. Maybe a disk on a drill would be intermediate. My little dremel knock off has little discs about 1/2" across at the largest. I'd guess you'd want different sizes for different parts of your work. Can you post a picture or two of what you make, just for fun?

  16. This seems like one of those defining topics where people have to decide how much of the Bible they want to believe is true. Or for that matter, even the question of any sex outside of marriage could define that. Or maybe even the thought of sex outside of marriage. lol

At the least I think it was "wrong" for men proclaiming themselves ministers to have sex with women outside their marriage, especially those seeking Christian direction.

Also "incorrect" to say the the Bible approves of the gay relationship, as far as I can tell, as some gay ministers would claim. But I figure people can do what they want, and nobody is going to stop me from thinking about sex icon_smile.gif:)-->

  17. Hey Raf,

No need to apologize, I didn't remember you claiming that anyway, you were just quoting someone ... I just like lively discussion icon_smile.gif:)-->

NPR has the best account I've seen of the big surge coming in from the east, right over the levees probably.

    http://www.npr.org/templates/ sto...storyId=4838668

The possible toll in the east, ninth ward, chalmette, still concerns me since that surge came through so fast.

    Let us know ...

  19. ok, I can't resist

Just saw CNN's mock up of "how it happened". In my mind they wedged one foot in their mouth when they said the water flowing OUT of the east into the canal was actually water magically flowing in. Now, incredibly, they "wedged" the other foot in there ...

Anyway, they get the wedge from the gulf right, coming into New Orleans east (and Chalmette, etc. ... I worked down to Mereaux) and I guess they say lake water from Lake Pontchartrain came over that levee (I'm not so sure of that, Lake Borgne maybe), but then they say all this caused a break in the industrial canal levee that let a huge wave through (insert dumb cnn comments on this incredible wave after the break, how hard things were hit). Then they show proof ...a picture of St Rose (the nursing home), BUT it is still standing.

OK, let me clarify icon_smile.gif:)-->, I'm just saying what I see, not saying I am absolutely right, feel free to slap me down ... lol

I don't think any levees broke there ... that is why footage a day (?) later showed water flowing out over the levees from New Orleans east (the ninth ward, chalmette, etc). If this huge wave had come in through a levee break, it would have gone back out through the same hole. As far as I can tell, that is where they later intentionally broke the levees to let the water out. I haven't seen footage on this, it just makes sense.

OK, I've said it, I'm smarter than CNN's paid geniuses icon_smile.gif:)--> And that is after 3 glasses of wine, a horticulture degree, and a dial up connection (and that silly bachelor of theology). They should demand a refund and send the money to ME.

Thank God. Rhino, I still think they'll pass 1,000, but I hope they're right and they don't find 10,000.

Yeah, that is a little encouraging ... still so hard to know. I remember hearing an early account of someone saying it came up so fast they barely had time to get upstairs ... that didn't make sense to me at the time, but I guess that was in the east where the surge topped the levees, as later footage showed ...

I never really thought the nightmare scenario could quite happen, north winds filling the city with lake water as the storm passed just to the east. But something close happened in the east, though that is less protected from the surge waters out of the gulf.

I've since seen another nightmare scenario that put hurricane Pam (fictional) from the south to the west of town ... I guess the surge comes through the marsh or up the river ...

Anyway, hopefully no more for a couple hundred years for New Orleans. Now I'll hope for under a 700. icon_smile.gif:)--> I'm counting on those resiliant Chalmatians and hardy folks in the nint'ward.

I guess blasting the levee, even below the city, let the water move quickly enough downstream to relieve the flooding upstream?

I know they can now let it through above the city, where it flows under the interstate into Lake Pontchartrain. It was pretty awesome rapids the year I saw it.

    google is so cool ...

As it turned out, the destruction of the Caernarvon levee was unnecessary; several major levee breaks well upstream of New Orleans, including one the day after the dynamiting, made it impossible for flood waters to seriously threaten the city.
