  2. Just started a job that requires loooooong hours for a while. Am in desperate need of some ideas for meals that I can cook on Saturdays that can be heated or completed thru the week when time is at a premium. Would like to use a crock-pot as much as I can - have a timer that I can use because I leave early and return late. Am hoping for recipes that serve 4-6 Any recipes, advice greatly appreciated
  3. My family loves split pea soup. We always serve it with fresh lemon and tabasco sauce on the side - they freshen and enhance the flavors so nicely.

I recall reading of your nephew in the days following the attack and his death. I was saddened then and am saddened now. May God comfort you and your family.
  6. I am so very sorry for what you and your family have had to endure. The only true satisfaction would be that her death did not occur, especially under such circumstances. Life is not fair. My prayers are with you and your family. Kindest regards.

    Many Thanks

For the past three years I have been working toward a master's degree. The past year has been particularly difficult and wearisome. God has been graceful and merciful toward me - He has strengthened me. I am finnished! I have spent many hours at my computer - and often took brief excursions to the "Cafe" where I sat for a few moments to hear what was going on with you all. I feel that I must say "thank you" for letting me listen in to your conversations - it was often just the distaction and just the type of fellowship that I needed to type that next page, read that next article. thanks again to all you greasespotters. you just never know the lives you touch -
  8. I also had a sweet occurance today. Was at my college library at closing time when an old, disheveld man was trying to check out a Bible with his health insurance card - when that didn't work, he offered a phone card. Was able to offer a Bible that was in my car - nice, large print - he was surprised and delighted and very thankful. So was I.

Mackinac Island is definately a wonderful vacation spot. One of the things that we have enjoyed the most is to bike around the island - just over eight miles of beautiful rock formations and trees on the left, with the bluest, clearest water you can imagine on the right. If you take the last ferry back to the main land (both upper and lower peninsulas offer plenty of places to stay at a great price) you are treated to the sight of the bridge in its sparkling glory. Have to have lake perch from Scalawags, fudge - let me count the ways, and fresh washed cherries while you are there. Do it once and you'll do it again and again.

  20. I never cease to be amazed by the intertwining of the simplicities and complexities of life. Monday we returned to our hometown to attend the funeral of a dear friend who died at the new hospice residence at the age of 95. She was one of my dearest, spriritual mentors. She always said, "There is nothing sweeter nor more satisfiying than knowing you are where God would have you to be." In the last year, she frequently would express a desire "to be called home" as she suffered with dementia and in recent days, a broken hip. We were well prepared to celebrate her life with people we had not seen for several years. What we were not prepared for when we arrived at the service was to find out that her daughter-in-law, who was also dear to us was transferred to the hospice the night before. Everyone thought that someone else had let us know about her brief but devastating illness. We were unbelievably shocked. She was one of the people we longed to see - to laugh with and to cry with. We were able to spend some good moments together and I am grateful. But, I am reminded again at how the predictability and surprise of death affect me. When this topic was started, I responded as a nurse. Yesterday I responded as a well prepared friend, as well as a poorly prepared friend. I never cease to be amazed.
  21. Your life will never be the same. Some of the most intense living that I ever experienced was during the years that I was a hospice nurse. I never could have imagined the impact this would have on me and on my family. One of the best analogies for me is that of a dying celestial star. http://heasarc.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/snr.html They burn so brightly and so purely - there is so much energy at the end. No wonder it is called a super nova. As an artist, you will be amazed at the response to your gifts. We had a music therapist at one hospice and I marvelled at the therapeutic effect of music in the last days and hours of a person's life. I would never trade any time that I worked as a hospice nurse. Kindest regards.
  22. so, sorry! went back to the game, and Buffalo scored in the 1st 18 seconds! have never been a hockey fan until this year - can't believe what I've missed all these years - and to think I lived in Michigan for a good long time. Was watching on a Canadian channel - think, cbc next game - next monday
  23. Buffalo and Ottawa are now into overtime. Game one of the 2nd series - 6/6. Go Sabres!

    Quality of Life

One of my oldest (now 95) and dearest friends told me one time, and I believe it is true, "there is nothing better than being where God has called you." For me that has not been easy, but it has been wonderful in some strange and exciting ways. Enjoying life at this time. Both the bitter and the sweet. We live in an "urban village" otherwise known as a transitional neighborhood in a large city. When I sit on my front porch (we all have large front porches - even those who live in the 'uppers' or second stories), it is not unusual to hear/see/smell the cultures of Africa, Puerto Rico, the middle east as well as All American punk rock. Thankful to have been married almost 28 years. Not all those years were good, but as Wendell Berry (now there's a great poet) said, we were "faithful to the good in each other" - even when that good was hard to see. Kids are independent thinkers who love God and seek to follow Jesus Christ - Have a wonderful job in an urban medical practice. We see people from around the world (literally) and down the street, whether they have health insurance or not. Have friends there who are Christian and Muslim and we laugh over lunch. All day hear Swahili, Russian, Arabic and Spanish spoken. Watch unbelievable explanations acted out when language fails. Have friends who will travel (as will I) 400 miles for a good breakfast together. Can it get better than this?

    Do you celebrate?

Buffalo NY celebrates ethnic heritage like no city I have ever seen. Polka bands and beer are the big news of the day - and I had to work! However...........Dyngus Day has become Dyngus week - there still is time. This is the way we do it here - week by week, rather than day by day. Last month it was St. Pats, followed by the Italian St. Joe's Summer festival season starts in March and goes to the Wingfest finale in Sept. Ahhhh, Buffalo.
