  1. Linda, dear and beautiful Linda, Did you perhaps play the Kazoo? I'm sure you'd have been a fine, fine, kazoo player. I can hear you in my mind's ear, belting out great tunes like, "I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy" and "You're a Grand Old Flag" even. Such a great childhood memory that must be for you. (please ignore the wailing sound coming from behind me, it's one of those pesky noisemakers my brother pinned to the back of my shirt and I just can't reach it)
  2. My second guess would be that you played the flute. Was it the flute? It could have been the flute. Lots of girls played the flute at that age. It's a great little girl instrument, much better than a violin, which is really a subliminal invitation to marry a mobster when you get older... Nice try Ala, but if it wasn't the recorder, which I'm sure Linda played like a pro, then it was most likely the flute.
  3. Two tourists from Illinois were driving through Wisconsin. As they were approaching Oconomowoc, they started arguing about the pronunciation of the town's name. They argued back and forth until they stopped for lunch. As they stood at the counter, one tourist asked the employee, "Before we order, could you please settle an argument for us? Would you please pronounce where we are? very slowly?" The blonde leaned over the counter and said, "Burrrrrrgerrrrrr Kiiiing."
  4. A man in Topeka, Kansas, decided to write a book about churches around the country. He started by flying to San Francisco, and started working east from there. Going to a very large church, he began taking photographs and making notes. He spotted a golden telephone on the vestibule wall and was intrigued with a sign which read "$10,000 a minute." Seeking out the pastor he asked about the phone and the sign. The Pastor answered that this golden phone is, in fact, a direct line to Heaven and if he pays the price he can talk directly to God. The man thanked the pastor and continued on his way. As he continued to visit churches in Seattle, Austin, Greensboro, Chicago, and all around the United States, he found more phones with the same sign, and the same answer from each pastor. Finally, he arrived in Wisconsin. Upon entering a church in Waterloo, Wisconsin behold, he saw the usual golden telephone. But THIS time, the sign read Calls: 35 cents." Fascinated, he asked to talk to the pastor. "Reverend, I have been in cities all across the country and in each church I have found this golden telephone and have been told it is a direct line to Heaven and that I could talk to God, but, in the other churches the cost was $10,000 a minute. Your sign reads 35 cents a call. Why?" The pastor, smiling benignly, replied, "Son, you're in Wisconsin - now.....it's a local call."
  5. How many guesses do I get? My first guess is the recorder. If one per contestant is all that's allowed, that's my guess. I started to post my second guess, but just in case my first one is wrong and there's some hidden rule like a limit of one guess per post, I sure don't want to risk giving away my second chance at winning (assuming, of course, that there is more than one guess per contestant allowed...) 6. I just bought Mitch Miller's Holiday CD off eBay - have been sort of looking for it for years, as it's an album my mom played every year... Can't wait til it arrives! I'm not in the mood for the Chipmunks yet. Of course, I'll start playing Elvis' Christmas album (CD) this weekend... Have been listening to a local station on the radio that plays all Christmas stuff every couple days for a few hours at a time, but not quite all day yet. I enjoy a variety including most everything that's been mentioned so far. My personal favorite Christmas song (which I NEVER tire of) is Bruce Springsteen singing Santa Claus is Coming to Town. I just heard his Merry Christmas on the radio today for the first time and it's great, but I love his Santa Claus is Coming to Town the most of them all, year after year. My daughter really laughs at how excited I get when it comes on the radio. This year, she has taken to imitating me - as if that'll stop me!!!
  7. Sunesis - I have some of Jim Kweskin and the Jug Band's stuff in my collection - used to get to listen to it more than I do lately, but I appreciate the reminder and will pull it out to enjoy today! I think I remember talking with Ron G. about music and that he also knows of their music... And Doc Watson - oh man - awesome, absolutely awesome picker! I had originally included him in my list of performers I especially enjoyed at the Bluegrass Festival I posted earlier, but I decided to shorten it. Was such a shame when his son Merle died. Loved their shows! Have some of Doc's stuff in the collection, as well - Tennessee Stud comes immediately to mind... I just love to hear exciting pickin! I keep telling myself that one day I will learn to play myself, but so far, I haven't taken the time. Ala - As a young girl, I used to listen to my a.m. radio when I went to bed and my stepdad would come turn it off before he went to bed - most the time I was still awake and pretending to be asleep, so as to be allowed to continue listening... Have always had a passion for music. I remember that same time in music as yo mentioned. Remember Build Me Up Buttercup? I've sang that to every baby I've ever rocked! Mostly I think music is relaxing, but I also love it really loud sometimes. Music is so diverse! I have something playing almost 24/7 - I don't watch much TV. Time to go post on the Favorite Christmas music thread ...
  8. I remember Pete's fight. It had a tremendous effect on my life. I had a hard time digesting all I read on Waydale and GS as I realized that I had been so manipulated by twi leadership, to make a long story shorter. I stayed away for long periods of time as I discovered, for one thing, that the reason I divorced my husband was not entirely my own free will decision. I was manipulated by highly skilled people who had been trained to make one such as myself believe it was my own decision. I have always considered myself a strong, independent individual, and to read others' stories of what twi had done to them was too close to what I had lived through to be coincidences. This bruised my ego as much as the original pain of being M & A'd. I almost could not bear seeing myself as a victim of twi. When I peeked in one day to see if there had been any new developments toward the closing down of twi, I found the community of believing that I used to feel in twi - pretty much the reason why I loved twi once upon a time. That common goal was Pete's recovery. It was such a beautiful thing. His sister's selfless devotion to her brother, along with the energy from the GS in general reminded me that God's kids are still God's kids and we ARE all a family, regardless of twi's failure. I'm so sorry that Pete passed away. It was a terrible loss for us all, of course mainly for his kids and the rest of his family, but also, for God. I can only figure that he would have been so miserable had he continued to live that he passed away - I sure don't understand his death any other way. I was stunned when he did not recover. Having said that, I will not forget the pride I felt when reading how much love and concern and believing and praying went on here. lcm thought it was a bad thing to be a greasespot. I disagree. God bless Pete's family. I continue to pray for them all. Lifted - Thanks for this thread to publicly remember someone who warrants remembering.
  9. Loved the Tubes. We're white punks on dope Mom & Dad went to Hollywood Hang myself if I get enough rope Can't clean up - tho I know I should White punks on dope... of course, I can maybe help you now, by replacing it with their: I was a punk before you were a punk I was a punk before you You want some action? I'll put your *ss in traction. I was a punk before you were a punk I was a punk before you! It's probably a good thing all my albums are tucked away in northern WI. (All I have here are CD's, which are taking over my office LOL!) You don't have to thank me - am glad to help you out there Had thought of The Tubes just last week. Of course now, it's Da Yoopers playing on the radio doing Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer... Slight culture change, eh? Are you a Lou Reed fan too? I used to play his stuff every day for hours... good ol' 70's anyways...
  10. A thousand thank yous, Steve! I don't know how I could have goofed THAT many times, but I sure do appreciate you cruising by to straighten me out. It went so easily when I used the right URL - only one try and voila!, there it was!

  12. Thanks for the info, Toadfriend. I tried both the numbers Yahoo listed, and one was no longer in service, and the one that matched the address on Mikels Ln - a lady answered and said that wasn't the same Michael Caldwell I knew and loved... It was fun, tho - and I think I may try that USSearch next...
  13. I too, appreciate your telling your story. I know it's not easy. I'm sorry that you and your family aren't free to enjoy each other as you all would like. And, congrats to both you and your wife on getting married. I wish you alifetime full of loving each other as you do today.
  14. Cowboy Poetry Jake, the rancher, went one day to fix a distant fence. The wind was cold and gusty and the clouds rolled gray and dense. As he pounded the last staples in and gathered tools to go, The temperature had fallen, the wind and snow began to blow. When he finally reached his pickup, he felt a heavy heart. From the sound of that ignition, he knew it wouldn't start. So Jake did what most of us would do if we had been there. He humbly bowed his balding head and sent aloft a prayer. As he turned the key for the last time, he softly cursed his luck. They found him three days later, frozen stiff in that old truck. Now Jake had been around in life and done his share of roaming. But when he saw Heaven, he was shocked?it looked just like Wyoming! Of all the saints in Heaven, his favorite was St. Peter. (Now, this line ain't needed but it helps with rhyme and meter) So they set and talked a minute or two, or maybe it was three. Nobody was keeping' score -- in Heaven time is free. "I've always heard," Jake said to Pete, "that God will answer prayer, But one time I asked for help, well, he just plain wasn't there." "Does God answer prayers of some, and ignore the prayers of others? That don't seem exactly square -- I know all men are brothers." "Or does he randomly reply, without good rhyme or reason? Maybe, it's the time of day, the weather or the season?" "Now I ain't trying to act smart, it's just the way I feel. And I was wonderin', could you tell me?what the heck's the deal?" Peter listened very patiently and when Jake was done, There were smiles of recognition, and he said, "So, you're the one!!" "That day your truck, it wouldn't start, and you sent your prayer a flying, You gave us all a real bad time, with hundreds of us trying." "A thousand angels rushed, to check the status of your file, But you know, Jake, we hadn't heard from you in quite a long while." "And though all prayers are answered, and God ain't got no quota, He didn't recognize your voice, and started a truck in Minnesota." BETTER KEEP IN BETTER TOUCH!
  15. Ah, bluegrass and folk music - my main musical passion, altho I love almost all music. I am a card carrying member of the John Hartford fan club. I'm having a ball collecting all I can find of his stuff on eBay. Before I ever attended a ROA, I went to the Great Northern Bluegrass Festival at Mole Lake, WI. I think I went to more of them than rocks! It was a 4-day music festival, with Mr. John Hartford closing the show each night. He wrote Gentle On My Mind, which Glen Campbell sang when it skyrocketed. John Hartford also wrote the wonderful Boogie song. I may never forget the 50,000 or so fans all singing the words together and swaying to that one in the rain more times than not! That man absolutely owned every audience I ever was a part of, and I saw him perform at least 60 times that I can count! He not only played the guitar, the fiddle, and the banjo, he danced a clog dance on an amplified piece of plywood all the while! He could make the banjo verbalize words!!! The bluegrass festival at Mole Lake developed for my ex-husband and me, into a weeklong and sometimes 10 day campout as we made friends with so many folks as the years went by. I believe we attended 16 bluegrass festivals. Of course I saw the father of bluegrass, Bill Monroe played that show more times than I can count, and it was truly a sad day when he passed away. He was certainly gracious to all who came forward to speak to him and thrilled many a young musician's heart as he allowed all to jam with them backstage after his shows. Vassar Clements and Benny Martin are personal favorites of mine, in fact, the last time I saw John Hartford was when he played along with Vassar and the FL Symphony orchestra about 5 years ago in Clearwater, FL. There were so many bands that played there, that it is hard to recall them. Pure Prairie League, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Sawyer Brown were especially entertaining. I won't go into all I remember, but I have a fun Dwight Yoakum story. My buddy Laurie, is extremely well-endowed, as they say. Apparently, that is what Dwight Yoakum looks for in a lady. One of his roadies approached my friend and invited her and me to go party on the bus with Dwight. My friend declined, so I did not go, but it was really wild to hear the conversation between the roadie and my very drunk "biker babe" friend... It was the roadie's job to find girls for the musician after the show! John Hartford was also a licensed steamboat pilot. I was fortunate enough to take a trip down the Illinois River when they were still running the Julia Belle Swain out of Peoria. My ex-husband said that was a life-changing experience for me, at age 25. Words fail me to describe my great love for that man. I was delighted to join him up in the pilot house and sing his songs with him, some that I knew better than he did. He confessed to me that he used cue cards and was suprised that I knew all the words to his Julia Belle Swain song. I was so honored. He shared his love for the river and song with me, and I shall never forget that. I also got to see through his binoculars, and that was quite a thrill. My exhusband said that he always knew just where I was during that trip. If I wasn't within his sight, he knew I was up in the pilot house. At the end of that 2 day trip, John introduced my family to his wife, and referred to us as "Diehard Mole Lakers." She gave quite the impressed facial expression, as you would have to really know what he meant by using those exact words, and she did. I was thrilled for him that she was his wife. They were excellent together. It was especially remarkable that after he passed away last June, that his wife took ill and she passed away six months later, on his birthday! Don't leave your records in the sun they'll get all wavy and they just won't run They just won't play just won't play just won't play no more... Well, I had this record that I really did like It was the last one they had in the store. I left it laying on the car back seat and now it just won't play no more!
  16. I love Arlo Guthrie, and his dad, Woody, for that matter! I happen to have a copy of that album, as well as a cassette tape copy... Whenever I notice that movie on tv, I almost always stop what I'm doing and sit down to watch it. It seems lamer as the years go by, but I really still enjoy it. "You can get anything you want at Alice's restaurant, walk right in, it's around the back just a half-a-mile from the railroad track. You can get anything you want at Alice's restaurant 'ceptin' Alice" LOVE THAT SONG (typed from memory) Now if you wanna talk classic lyrics to a song, how 'bout Arlo's Motorcycle Song: I don't want a pickle I just wanna ride on my motor-sickle (spelled as it's pronounced in the song) I don't wanna fly-I(same as above) I just wanna ride on my motor-cy-I...
  17. Hey, Abigail! I have a similar Thanksgiving memory to yours. I think mine was in 1968 though, and my mom lived almost another 10 years. My mom was in the hospital over Thanksgiving that year, and was allowed something like a 2 hour pass to go home. I was 9 years old and had the honor of preparing the dinner. Her husband at the time helped some, like with lifting the turkey in and out of the oven, but the rest was up to me. I think that's the most appreciated I ever felt in my childhood - there were no complaints about anything I did for that meal.
  18. Oh thanks, guys! I will check that out RB - yes, I do have web space avolleyball, just have to learn about how to access it - I'm sure aol has a tutorial or something... Goey - I'll send you the two that we were most hoping to send her when she was here visiting last month. Another friend of mine found the URL for some others and sent them for me, but hasn't written me instructions yet... Thanks again! I really appreciate the help.
  19. I had a complete Publix Thanksgiving dinner last year, Hope! Great stuff! Of course, I still made my potato casserole... yep, I got the pies 2/$5 - can't beat em! Just spoke with bowtwi jr's girlfriend - love that girl! She tells me that bowtwi jr has decided HE wants to make the pumpkin pies!!! So I chuckled and we had pumpkin pie for breakfast. (The princess informed me she does NOT eat sweets for breakfast - what is WITH these kids today??? LOL - as if it matters - it WILL get eaten, no doubt) THEN, the girlfriend tells me that SHE is making stuffing. LOL We'll be eating punkin pie and stuffing over and over til maybe even I will get sick of it!!! LOL But, she ALSO told me she is making ham, no turkey, and is roasting a chicken in case my guest doesn't eat pork... So, what the heck, it's all good. The main thing is, we're getting together and doing what we do best - EAT. Seriously, we do have a Thanksgiving tradition that I really enjoy. We each tell something we're thankful for and I sure like that part!!! btw Hope, party or none, we'll have to get together one of these days...
  20. I have picked up the 3 pies from Publix' bakery and the frozen cool whip. Personally, I'd prefer vanilla ice cream, but it won't travel the hour and a half drive to bowtwi jr's as well as the frozen cool whip will. It's nice of them to bake such a nice pie, so I don't feel obligated to do them from scratch... I have all the fixins for the potato and cheddar cheese casserole with the chex cereal on top and the green bean casserole that are my responsibility to bring anytime we gather for a meal these days, to be prepared in the morning. I have the dressing altogether in the fridge - how do they say, permeating, I think is the word I'm looking for... Oh yeah, we do love Thanksgiving! The best part is all my favorite people will be around me all day!!! Woo hoo!!!
  21. I had heard they left Milwaukee and moved to Knoxville, Tennessee maybe? Anyone know if they're in or out?
  22. one more thing I forgot to add - I do put them in the body of the text, not as an attachment. Thanks Goey!
  23. I have aol. My friend is in Germany - all I know about hers is that it is gmx.net I know that mine is set for html- I'll let her know to set hers that way, too. Do I need to get the URL for these? Thanks so much for your help
  24. I have sent some graphics in emails that dance or move. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. Anyone have any advice? For example, this smiley hug - it's about a 50/50 shot whether or not it will hug. I don't understand. Sure would appreciate if someone can explain what I need to do. I have a bunch of graphics that should move, but don't. I just tried to cut and paste a few here for examples, but that doesn't work either. I'm not trying to post links to websites, just little graphics, like what Kit and Hillsbro do...
  25. John You said You do know that PCAnywhere works with dial-up as well, right? I've been using it for a couple years with both dial-up and cable setups.
