Name that Actor/Actress (or Role)
GeorgeStGeorge replied to Raf's topic in Movies, Music, Books, Art
This one may be a little tougher, as the actress, while quite recognizable in a couple of roles, isn't an A-lister. Beverly Switzler Alice Mitchell Caroline Duffy George -
The Gauntlet of Classes and Indoctrination
GeorgeStGeorge replied to skyrider's topic in About The Way
Aparently, my thinking on the subject hasn't changed in ten years. :)/> From the link skyrider posted: "I remember when I first heard that the Corps were all going to be salaried. I thought, "Either LCM is believing for a miracle, or he's an idiot." Turn all the cash-supplying Corps into cash sinks, all the while running off everyone else who was sending in ABS. I guess the miracle never appeared." George -
The Gauntlet of Classes and Indoctrination

And the "paid" Corps on the field got a subsistence wage. I seem to recall my Branch Leader and his wife sharing an apartment with a couple of other guys. And if you wanted to bless them with a gift (especially cash), they couldn't accept it, because it was a "bribe." Of course, when LCM came into town, there were ALL SORTS of gifts for the MOG. The Gauntlet of Classes and Indoctrination

Some random thoughts: Corps go full-time staff. When I first heard that, I thought, If this ISN'T revelation, it's the dumbest thing I can think of. Turning one of your biggest revenue sources into a revenue sink, overnight, certainly flouted "worldly" wisdom. As WordWolf pointed out, there COULD have been some non-obvious benefit (increased classes, book sales, etc.); but, of course, none of that ever materialized. Fun vs. rigid ROA. I took PFAL in 1982 and the Advanced Class in 1983, so I didn't attend a ROA until 1984. I had signed up for Bless Patrol and volunteered for the "Way Chorale." In order to make rehearsals and the "shows" (evening meetings) I traded most of my BP shifts for the late night ones. Still, I was happy to be there. I didn't mind sitting up all night in a drizzle, because I felt I was actually blessing other people. And there was still plenty of free time in the day to socialize. In later years, people from different branches were "assigned" duties (BP, kitchen, bookstore) without any say in it from the people involved. I still enjoyed hanging with friends, but the whole deal seemed to controlled. I have some good memories of ROA, but I'm not sad that it's gone. George -
I was thinking of the former. I haven't seen "Aladdin," but I doubt that "Et tu, Brute" was its most memorable line. :) You're up. George

Some of the names seem familiar, but I can't place them. I'm hoping "Ray Kinsella" is another clue, not an actor's name. :) George -

Game: Before & After (Movies and TV)

That's it. I figured that if you got Lost Boys and Band of Brothers, that it might trigger an old memory of Boys in the Band. You're up. George -
Twinky, I don't know if you'll see this reply, since the computer questions forum hardly gets looked at, but here goes: I got the free upgrade from W7 to W10 a few days ago. It tried to add a bunch of features which really looked stupid to me (letting people track me, letting advertisers push stuff), a new web browser (Edge -- though I immediately switched back to IE11 as my default); and it took away stuff I really liked, like the suite of games. W10 has a "Store" from which you can download games as "apps" but the newer versions (at least of Minesweeper and Mahjong) are poorer than the W7 versions. W10 also ditched my Kaspersky software, so I had to re-load that. I'm not fond of the new file explorer, but I can manage it. There are other bugs, as well. As you may recall, I said I made IE11 my default browser. Now, whenever I click a link, I get a popup window showing my alternatives for browsing. IE is highlighted, but I still have to select it. There's one of those check boxes that says "use this app every time," but it's apparently ignored by the rest of the operating system. I have to click the damn thing even if I open the exact same link. Maybe, if I were one-third my current age, I might find this "upgrade" pleasant. To me, it's an annoyance AT BEST. George

I remember "Wolf Lake" now. "Moonlight" also seems familiar. George

"The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" (Gene Pittney)? George

Of course. George

The cast listings help a little, but I'm still not remembering any of the shows clearly enough. New choice (E) sounds fun. Sergeant O'Roarke and Corporal Agarne as paranormal investigators? :) George
