  1. A-ha! There ya go, Oakspear, thanks. I thought they were BS'ers. There goes that small bit of appreciation. icon_razz.gif:P-->

Chwester, I see what you're saying. I got tripped up on the food/music comparison, but I think I get what you're saying.

I'd compare music differently to eating food, though. Hearing music may be more like rubbing an apple on my head than it would be like eating it. Maybe.

In fact, I suggest a test. Let's all rub cake on our heads, the real high calorie stuff, and see if we gain weight. It may take several pieces to get it right. In further fact, let's all rub cake on each OTHERS heads and see who gains weight! Who wants to be first?? icon_smile.gif:)-->

    icon_biggrin.gif:D--> icon_biggrin.gif:D--> FOOD FIGHT!!!! icon_biggrin.gif:D--> icon_biggrin.gif:D-->

  2. Well, Chwester, I'd agree with you that Black Sabbath was always a pretty pi$$ poor band outside of the guitarists who came through it, Randy Rhoads, Jake Lee, Zak Wylde, can't recall any others right off.

IMO Ozzie O was and is a sad-sack "performer" who sounds like a bad case of nasal drip. (ducking bananas from the BS fans!) I dunno, they never moved me. I figured, if Satan is actually using fat a$$es like Ozzie to pump his stuff, he's pretty hard up. But then your average televangelist has roast rump too. I just never took them seriously. Like, if they think that's evil, they need to take a walk through the neighborhood I grew up in and see a guided tour of hell.

Anyway, that's my yearly BS rant. icon_razz.gif:P-->

I don't understand this though: "Any music you listen to is definitely going to have an effect on the listener. Just as any food you eat is going to effect the eater."

Any music? Has an effect? How do you figure?

Music isn't like glue, it doesn't stick to our brains just because we hear it. I'm not sure what you mean. I'm taking it you're talking about pop music and "songs"? Also. instrumental music is a while different ballgame in my book, it required a much more engaged body and mind.

Granted, if I hear lyrics about killing hamsters or abusing ducks, I turn it off right away but in general, I'm not sure what you mean...?

  3. Hey Goey, I'm inclined to agree with you. Another thing that hits me along these lines is that Lucifer/The Devil isn't actually the mirror image of God, as in the "opposite". God's God. Luci's a created angel of high rank with a bad attitude or something. They aren't equal. So it doesn't follow by any "logic" that ol' Luci would be utomatically able to replicate something like a "birth".

The older Dealing with the Adversary class taught that the "seed" birth thing boiled down to an impregantion that "held the mind" open. I pictured it at the time as sort of a permanent wedge. It was taught that it held the person open to the D.S.'s influence.

I know why Ali won the Louis fight though.

  4. "Beavis and Butthead Do America", one of, anyway.

The scene where they meet this old, drunk, destitute couple out in the desert and it turns out to be their long, lost parents. It's sad. icon_frown.gif:(-->

(In the whole B & B series it's never said where their parents are. Although there are hilarious moments, I think, you keep coming back to where's the parents for these two kids? The movie puts that piece in place).

Both funny and tragic. Classic film making. I know, I'm a softie.

  6. Dearest Larry,

I was about to call for the complete and total deletion of this thread, and any thread that refers, implies, insinuates or even sets within close proximity to it, due to various and sundry irresponsible and incredible statements, but I suddenly realized that there is a juxtaposition between the irresponsible and RESPONSIBLE statements which sets forth a little known and heretofore lost structural figure known in antiquity as "apodectinowyouseeitnowyoudontous".

This isn't apparent upon first reading, in fact after poring over this thread not less than 378 times (not counting partial references to the tape library) it still wasn't apparent, however upon the 379TH time, the various statements began to give off a slight green glow, and it was at that time this structural balance stepped forward and fell in my lap, much like a cup of 160 degree MacDonald's coffee, only not as hot and slightly less wet.

It's there, believe me, and if I had the time to show everyone I would, but I really don't right now, but rest assured I am giving it my full attention. I highly suggest everyone do the full 378 readings and see for themselves.

In the meantime, I am REELING at the possibilities of EX10's "forgetfulness, unremembrance, and cluelessness" offerings. The implications are truly awesome, and once I can get the time to post my thoughts, I will, but needless to say, this changes everything. Everything!!! (all hail EX10!) bowsmiley.gif

I think chat's cool, I always get pschizo using it, but that's just me. Lots of people enjoy it, and that's great. I'm learning the drill, slowly but surely. Might try it again sometime. Thanks again.

  8. Ah, thanks Kathy! That's Satch alright! The Alien is in the house! icon_smile.gif:)--> Still buzzing from that concert!

Oaks, has to figure you'd be a Jaco fan! Great choice for bedtime. Here's another bio if you haven't seen it: "Jaco (the extraordinary and tragic life of Jaco Pastorius, the world's greatest bass player)" by Bill Milkowski. If that ain't a long title, don't know what is. Great book, though. Cool photos including a couple of his two sons, little guys.

  9. Great tune, A la!

Well, I'm up wandering around and had to say hi to the music thread!

Saw Joe Satriani tonight at the Fillmore, San Francisco (CA.) Whew hooo! I love that guy. Has Jeff Bissonette on bass guitar, who did a fretless bass solo spot that was just off the charts. I thought I saw the spirit of Jaco Pastorius high fiving the sound man for a second. icon_smile.gif:)--> JB is a fine player

But Joe. He spanked the plank for over 2 hours and looked as fresh at the end as he did at the start. His playing has a real sense of humor, for a "metal" speedster shredder type of player. His harmonic sense is so refreshing, he goes from down-low heavy blues stuff to "outside" jazz melodies in the same song and really does just about everything you could do on and to a guitar. He's still doing the bald look, with the little sunglasses, so he's truly "surfing like an alien now." Great show. Had a guy open named Ned Evett who played a fretless glass/mirrored neck guitar in a really unique style. Joe came out and introduced him, very graciously set up the audience for him. For such an accomplished and well known artist, Joe was really down to earth, just really having a good time playing. Great show.

My daughter got the tickets as a Christmas gift for me. What could be better? We both went and had a great night. icon_smile.gif:)--> I didn't dance A la, so nobody got hurt. icon_biggrin.gif:D--> I did a lot of hoo haing and clapping though.

  10. Hey Chatty, I notice that sometimes too. I keep a couple stations pegged on my radio and usually listen to them on the way into work. Off the top of my head I can't think of anything that's grabbed my attention..John Mayer's one, we got his cd. Avril Lavigne was another.

Yeah, it's easy for a week to go by like that. Trouble for me is a lot of music I hear sounds the same. I have to cast around to various stations, college, jazz, to find one that plays something beyond one kind of programming. Plus all the digital sound makes a lot of it sound dead. Not all of it, but some.

  11. A la Prochaine mentioned the Taylor tune "Home by Another Way". Sweet tune, so I dug it out this weekend, from the "Never Die Young" cd. You be right, 'Chaine! Great tune, and it has a very thoughtful message inside it. Classic Taylor, snappy beat, easy feel. For all those heading home by another way, The Maestro of the Healing Soul sings, children: icon_smile.gif:)-->

    "Home By Another Way"

    Timothy Mayer and James Taylor

    Those magic men the Magi

    Some people call them wise

    Or Oriental, even kings

    Well anyway, those guys

    They visited with Jesus

    They sure enjoyed their stay

Then warned in a dream of King Herod's scheme

They went home by another way

Yes they went home by another way

    Home by another way

Maybe me and you can be wise guys too

And go home by another way

We can make it another way

Safe home as they used to say

Keep a weather eye to the chart on high

    And go home another way

    Steer clear of royal welcomes

    Avoid a big to-do

A king who would slaughter the innocents

Will not cut a deal for you

He really, really wants those presents

    He'll comb your camel's fur

Until his boys announce they've found trace amounts

Of your frankincense, gold and myrrh

Time to go home by another way

    Home by another way

You have to figure the Gods saying play the odds

And go home by another way

We can make it another way

Safe home as they used to say

Keep a weather eye to the chart on high

    And go home another way

Home is where they want you now

You can more or less assume that you'll be welcome in the end

Mustn't let King Herod haunt you so

Or fantasize his features when you're looking at a friend

Well it pleasures me to be here

And to sing this song tonight

They tell me that life is a miracle

And I figured that they're right

    But Herod's always out there

He's got our cards on file

It's a lead pipe cinch, if we give an inch

Old Herod likes to take a mile

It's best to go home by another way

    Home by another way

We got this far to a lucky star

    But tomorrow is another day

We can make it another way

Safe home as they used to say

Keep a weather eye to the chart on high

    And go home another way

  12. Man, you need to be back on the radio, Oaks. You're got a great program!

I saw the early Fleetwood Mac out here, in San Francisco around 1970 or so when Peter Green was still with them. Seems like...I'm fuzzy on this, that a guitarist was also with them then, a Curly Cook. Got that stuck in my head. Not sure though.

They ripped. Peter's "Black Magic Woman" is great. Very soulful player and singer. They did an xxx-rated version of "Shake Your MoneyMaker" that was hilarious. They were drunk as skunks. Great band. Funny how it evolved over time in to the Big Mac. icon_smile.gif:)-->

  13. Hope you said this and it reminded me of something:

    quote:
I've always compared leaving TWI to quitting smoking. It's hard at first - you suffer from withdrawal, you crave it, but know it's not good for you so you stay away from it.

Recntly, a Dr. told me something about quitting smoking that totally surprised me. Check this out. He said that the actual withdrawal from the nicotine addiction is only about 24-48 hours. That's it. Your body won't "want" it after that.

So I asked him, what's all the big deal about it being so hard, it IS hard y'know.

He said the personal habits around it are what's hard. It's a mental battle and a tough one, but the physical stuff? Couple days. He also said all the publicity about how hard it is, was in his opinion, counter productive and helpful to tobacco companies. People become AFRAID to guit, thinking it's too hard so why try?

Interesting hey? I too see some similarities there.

  15. Yes I do Hope! We remember it well and often. It was such a fun night. Didn't he make a joke, something about being down in the dressing rooms and looking out at the parking lot through the window and seeing all the cars? He said "You all have some real nice cars". icon_smile.gif:)-->

I'd love to see those pictures. Yes!!

  16. Hey Happy Gang!

Kathy, praying, and stayin' as u can see. My best to you!

It's cloudy, cool and has all the makings of another rainy day on the west coast. Listened to this tune on the way in to work this morning. It's shower time, James Taylor style. The pastor of sweet music speaks icon_smile.gif:)--> :

    -----------------

    Shower the People

You can play the game and you can act out the part

Though you know it wasn't written for you

But tell me, how can you stand there with your broken heart

    Ashamed of playing the fool

One thing can lead to another; it doesn't take any sacrifice

Oh, father and mother, sister and brother

if it feels nice, don't think twice

Just shower the people you love with love

Show them the way that you feel

Things are gonna work out fine if you only will

Shower the people you love with love

Show them the way you feel

Things are gonna be much better if you only will

You can run but you cannot hide

    This is widely known

And what you plan to do with your foolish pride

When you're all by yourself alone

Once you tell somebody the way that you feel

You can feel it beginning to ease

I think it's true what they say about the squeaky wheel

    Always getting the grease.

Better to shower the people you love with love

Show them the way that you feel

Things are gonna be just fine if you only will

Shower the people you love with love

Show them the way that you feel

Things are gonna be much better if you only will

  18. Hey Raf. Is it the PFAL videotapes you're thinking of? He does mention it along the lines of "regarding figures of speech, the person who's done the most work on it that (he) knows of is E.W. Bullinger". It's a brief statement.

EW was definitely the 900 lb gorilla on figures of speech. I've got some of his stuff. "How to Enjoy the Bible" is a nice piece of work, has a great deal of the same material in PFAL, presented differently.

Here's what he says, parts of, in his intro to Figures of Speech, if this is of any interest:

    ------------

In fact, it is not too much to say that, in the use of these figures, we have, as it were, the Holy Spirit's own markings of our Bibles.

This is the most important point of all. For it is not by fleshly wisdom that the "words which the Holy Ghost teacheth" are to be understood. The natural man cannot understand the Word of God. It is foolishness unto him. A man may admire a sun-dial, he may marvel at its use, and appreciate the cleverness of its design; he may be interested in its carved-work, or wonder at the mosaics or other beauties which adorn its structure: but, if he holds a lamp in his hand or any other light emanating from himself or from this world, he can make it any hour he pleases, and he will never be able to tell the time of day. Nothing but the light from God's sun in the Heavens can tell him that. So it is with the Word of God. The natural man may admire its structure, or be interested in its statements; he may study its geography, its history, yea, even its prophecy; but none of these things will reveal to him his relation to time and eternity. Nothing but the light that cometh from Heaven. Nothing but the Sun of Righteousness can tell him that. It may be said of the Bible, therefore, as it is of the New Jerusalem -- "The Lamb is the light thereof." The Holy Spirit's work in this world is to lead to Christ, to glorify Christ. The Scriptures are inspired by the Holy Spirit; and the same Spirit that inspired the words in the Book must inspire its truths in our hearts, for they can and must be " Spiritually discerned " (I Cor. 2:1-16).

On this foundation, then, we have prosecuted this work. And on these lines we have sought to carry it out.

    --------------------------

Kind of long, but pretty nifty. He does say he considered them "holy spirit's own markings".

Still and all, he strongly suggests a two-fold learning curve-biblical study and the inspiration of Holy Spirit to open it's truths to us. The end result is to lead to Christ. Knowledge without the corresponding understanding is incomplete. So, his approach seemed to recognize that just knowing the figures of speech wasn't enough. That may be why he words it the way he does..."not too much to say"...."we have, as it were"....

It also seems that if a person were to study the bible, research it say, than as their understanding was opened to it's truth, they would be led to Christ, in an ongoing process. In other words, it keeps taking you back to Him. It may not be too much to say then, that if we find it taking us anywhere else we have a DEFinite marking of the Holy Spirit telling us that we're heading in the wrong direction. As it were. icon_smile.gif:)-->

  19. Hey Buck, yeah! Nice background there. Harve and I talked about Roy back then and he later played me a live cassette of that tune Someday. It was very nice and I remember it just the way you describe it.

First met Harve that summer he came in for the workshop. He had his Gibson SG strapped on the back of his bike. I was hanging around the BRC driveway.

Couple years later, played him an album by a guy named Ray Gomez, who is another RB kind of player, with a Jeff Beckish kind of sound. Not that well known. By that time Harvey was dropping secular music out of his vocablulary and we didn't get far. But life goes on.

Not for Roy though. There is some unresolved controversy with his surviving wife over how he actually died. She attempted to investigate the possibility that his death was the result of police brutality, made to look like a suicide. Phil Carson ties some of it together in his book. Apparently there wasn't enough evidence or money to carry on with it, and he wasn't a big enough "name" for the media to jump on it.

It is sad. I feel like he was a long lost brother to me.
