Playboy cover crosses line with Virgin Mary theme

Recommend 0 Express-News - It is never a good idea to satirize, cheapen or take similar liberties with the image of a religious icon.

But it's an especially bad idea to sexualize one in the process.

Such was the case in the latest issue of the Mexican edition of Playboy Magazine.

On its cover, the magazine published a photograph of a model posed and styled to resemble the Virgin Mary in front of what appears to be a stained glass window.

The model appears to be nude except for a white cloth draped over her head and parts of her breasts.

The dominant headline on the cover translates to "We adore you, Mary."

The cover model's first name, incidentally, is Maria.

Reports indicate that Raul Sayrols, the publisher of Playboy Mexico, defended the decision by explaining that "the image is not and never was intended to portray the Virgin of Guadalupe or any other religious figure. The intent was to reflect a Renaissance-like mood on the cover."

But the model's pose, the religious overtone and the headline taken almost directly from a prayer make that argument really hard to believe.

There would never have been a good time to publish such a cover, but to do so during the Christmas season — and precisely when Mexican Catholics are celebrating the yearly pilgrimage to the Mexico City basilica honoring the Virgin of Guadalupe, a grand religious event — was particularly offensive.

The decision to run such a cover was disrespectful to the millions of people who revere the Virgin Mary. And if the idea was to create a stir to sell more issues, it was an especially seamy marketing strategy.

Reuters News Service reports that the Chicago-based Playboy Enterprises Inc. released a statement explaining that, because the Mexican edition of the magazine was published by a licensee, the company did not approve or endorse the cover, but apologized along with Sayrols for any offense just as well.

'LIQUID GRAIN STORAGE FACILITY.'

2. He is not a 'BAD DANCER' - He is

' OVERLY CAUCASIAN.'

3. He does not 'GET LOST ALL THE TIME' - He

' INVESTIGATES ALTERNATIVE DESTINATIONS.'

4. He is not 'BALDING' - He is in

'FOLLICLE REGRESSION.'

5. He does not act like a 'TOTAL foot' - He develops a case of

RECTAL-CRANIAL INVERSION.'

Through ridicule, twi especially desensitized us to peoples' religious sensitivities.

Since being out of twi and more in touch with the Holy Spirit, I find the Holy Spirit encourages sensitivity and kindness towards others religious beliefs -- religious beliefs being found at the core of a person.
