1. Thank for all the prayer. It really works!!

I'm doing a lot better and recovering nicely. I never did feel partictularly sick, I just was unable to type express myself.

Now that I'm not as prone to those embarrasing and pesky typos, I feel more confident to post.

Thank you all so very much!!

    ex10

((((((((((ex10))))))))))) and all the rest of the affected Tejanos!

I'm just thankful I evacuated from Texas back in '88 and was reminded this past weekend of why.

We, here in the Ozarks, got the remnant of Ike Saturday night. I was happily chatting with Doojable in the GS chatroom when I lost power at straight up midnight. She probably thinks I hung up on her cuz she was speaking EVIL of Dallas, TX, but it was a power failure. I just now got power and internet service back up and running about an hour ago.

Dooj is probably okay since the brunt of the storm headed off to the east and, as everyone knows, Fort Worth is where the west begins. I think Tom Strange lives in FW, also, or in that vicinity. I pray all is well with them, also.

I was pretty amazed at the intensity of the storm that blew thru our hills, knowing we only got a tiny leftover corner of a remnant (most of it was in Oklahoma) and was struck by how violent it must have been when it made landfall in Galveston and Houston. I've been thinking and praying for ex10, ex70shouston and all the others who weathered that horrific storm.

Watching newscasters on tv blowing around in the wind and rain just doesn't do justice to the reality of these dreadful things.

I haven't had any news or anything since Sat night, but last I heard, the storm was headed off to Chicago where there was already flooding from an already existing storm system.

I think ol' p-mosh lives in the Houston area, but was evacuated to Dallas or something. I hope and pray all is well with him and his family.

A lot of local folks are packing their chainsaws and heading south to volunteer assistance and I may join them. Many think they can be of real help to folks down there and be recompensed with free firewood for the winter.

    Groucho...

I'm amazed and appalled that you'd feel the effects all the way up into Ohio. These storms seem to have a life of their own.

Glad all is well with you and yours.

  2. ((((((EXCIE)))))))

Not only did it make your day and her day, reading about it made MY day!!

Your tenacity, compassion and interest are amazing! How WONDERFUL!!!

  3. After chatting with ex10 last night and learning from her that my alma mater, Texas Tech, is about to lose it's accredation :( , and then reading the latest posts here, I just popped in to say that John Denver was a Tech alumnus.

Back to the regularly schedules posts.

    See you'uns at the barbecue!!

  4. Just browsing the assorted responses here, it becomes clear that, like anything else, different things work for different people.

I have a VERY, VERY big yard and mowing does it for me. Whether I'm riding, pushing, using my old manual push mower or pulling my brush hog, I "get it all out" while mowing...or most any kind of yard/outdoor work. My maintained yard has gone from 1/3 acre to a full three acres from reading the posts in the "About The Way" forum and learning all the stuff that was REALLY going on in TWI while I was happily, vapidly and unknowingly saying "God Bless you" and praising the virtues of VPW and his "class" to others back in the day.

Thanks Paw, Groucho, DWBH et al! You guys have opened my eyes. SERIOUSLY!

Working out with weights is also very effective for me. I've gone from 30 curls at 50 lbs to 200 curls at 90 lbs per day just from reading Rocky's posts in the politics forum.

Thanks, Rocky!! Maybe this election year, they'll suspend the election and let you and me arm wrestle to decide the next POTUS. Ya think?

My third favorite is target practice with firearms. I mostly use my muzzleloader for that because it's loud and belches a lot of flame and smoke, is great catharsis and relatively inepensive to play with.

That's reserved for special occasions like when I do a job and have a hard time getting paid.

  5. I've been heating with wood for about 17 years, now.

I just have a big airtight wood stove in the middle of the house with some fans to circulate the warm air. I can usually keep the house about 50 degrees above the ambient temp, which can be a little chilly when it gets REALLY cold outside.

My costs are about three gallons of gas, 2 cycle oil and bar oil for my chaninsaw. Comes to about $35 a year, now.

Sometimes I get lazy or too busy with other stuff and gave to buy it. It runs about $30 per "rick" (nobody seems to agree on exactly what a "rick" is, but generally, it's about a full size pickup load) these days

Although Confucious was right when he said "Man who cuts own firewood heats self twice", there's a downside in that the house gets really dusty and messy and sometimes smokey. It does keep the house smelling nice and it's a great workout.

I'll probably continue with it for several years to come.

  6. I guess I only look at TWI and God's providence in terms of my own life. I never really have considered it too much in the larger scheme. Since it is dwindled from its glory days of larger participation--God seems to have it under control.

I know that God's will is not thwarted by man, but man's will can be frustrated by God-should it run contrary to His purpose.

I am God, and there is no one like Me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things which have not been done, saying, My purpose will be established, and I will accomplish all My good pleasure. . .Isaiah 46:9-10

The Lord nullifies the counsel of the nations; He frustrates the plans of the peoples. The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the plans of His heart from generation to generation. . .Psalm 33:10, 11

In all that HE does--His plan and purpose HE will be glorified. So, I guess we look for what has glorified God in all of this. Deliverance, Salvation, healing, a keen awareness of His Grace, Love and Mercy in our deliverance.

We missed the boat--I think--because to understand God's providence we have to understand His goodness and Holiness. It is how it all fits together. Otherwise, God looks like a meglomaniac, and we have to find a new way to define Him. Seems to me, that is what we did in TWI.

Proverbs 19:21 Many are the plans in a man's heart, but the counsel of the Lord, it will stand. I guess we did not really understand the greatness and majesty and AUTHORITY of the Lord. Or we could not accept it because we really wanted the reins in our own lives. Not giving over to the Lordship of an "Absent Christ". We really refused to submit to His authority--but gave over all to some very bad men. Go figure??We didn't know Him enough to trust Him. He is worthy of faith.

We are not to be afraid of God's sovereignty, but to rest in it. To find comfort in it. The only way to do this is to know His character--His goodness--His Mercy--How He only does good--How He is a rock in a trial--a safe haven in a tempest. To know that He is love, and to also understand He is just, merciful, gracious, but oh so Holy. That His purpose and will are right, and we are to bend to it, because that is the best thing possible. For us-sinners--with flesh--not always the easiest or quickest or even the most pleasant thing, but ALWAYS the best.

In TWI--I ran the show. Understanding God's sovereign will was nearly impossible for me. I was way too busy believing for what I wanted. Not what was best for me, but what I wanted.

How shocking to find out after TWI--that His will was not thwarted and He was able to use my experience to Glorify Himself to me--in His Mercy and Grace to me in my deliverance from that deadly gospel they preached.

People talk about free-will and yes we do have it--it fits with God's goodness. But, God is so perfect and beyond our pea-brain comprehension it is hard for us to "get" that His purpose can be acomplished without overstepping our freewill.

There are many verses that imply God controls everything--I think it is a bit more complex than we understand.

What a WONDERFUL way to say it! I really appreciate your clear thinking that's so well expressed!

    Thank you.

  7. One of the many things I've done is to eliminate sugar as much as humanly possible from my diet. I now consume cayenne (capsicum) in the same volume most people use sugar. I've replaced black pepper with cayenne and grow it in my garden, using it in or on EVERYTHING.

Cayenne is a wonderful herb. Not only does it help control BP, it helps purify the blood, helps reduce inflammation and even helps heal wounds.

I keep some handy in my backpack and sprinkle it in my socks (sparingly) on extremely cold days as it keeps the feet warm.

I also take a niacin supplement which keeps me well circulated.

My cardiologist is somewhat dismayed by all this as he doesn't really understand it all, but he's taken me off all my cardio meds (Verapamil, coumadin, lanoxin, beta blockers and some other stuff I don't recall) except for the Lasix which I still need for chronic congestive heart failure. He just tells me whatever I'm doing, keep on doing it.

I don't know that I've ever had an actual myocardial infarction as I was born with a congenital birth defect in my heart which was first diagnosed when I was 18 and led to some serious episodes starting when I was 27. When in college, I joined the USMC Platoon Leader Corps which is the Marines equivalent of ROTC. My second physical examination resulted in a years worth of testing and subsequently getting kicked out, a draft status of 4F and a note saying I should go AFTER the women and children.

I now have a pacemaker and one deceased heart chamber and regurgitating valve which accounts for the chronic congestive heart failure.

Anyway, cayenne or capsicum is God's own wonder drug!

  8. Beautiful Ohio... :cryhug_1_:

I'm not sure that when Rottiegrrrl began this thread she necessarily meant songs that made you cry in tortured pain.

Maybe you should start a new thread, "Songs that make me cringe" or "songs that make me yawn". Then we can add The Singing Ladies of the Way.

  9. I am at 37.5 lbs lost as of yesterday.

I've got plenty of energy. I'm digging through my closet for smaller sizes.

Here is the site about the liquid diet that I am doing www.optifast.com

    CONGRATS!!!!

Kinda like getting a whole new life, isn't it?

I'll bet you wish you had a 15 year old kid, like I do, so you can wear his hand-me-downs :D

How much do you have to go?

  10. If you google L Craig Martindale. There is a link that shows up "L. craig martindale iii - Gegufyzu Journal" It tells you that you are infected and will download a pain in the butt virus. Please avoid it if you are on a PC (Macs are safe)

I've never had occasion to google L. Craig Martindale, but I'll keep that in mind if the urge ever overtakes me. It does seem fitting that L. Craig Martindale and virus would be almost synonymous.

    Thanks for the heads up.

So what'd ya have to do to rid yourself of that virus?

  11. So, Ron, does that mean you agree about the fish hook or have something to add about that ... reason for removal of the eye?

I don't know or care anything about a fish hook. It doesn't really matter save to say we were all BS'd.

It really doesn't matter how he got cancer. I really don't care if monkeys flew into his eye and infected him with cancer.

I think what angers most folks is that the very fact he even had cancer was covered up.

That pretty much sums it up for me.

Am I evil for finding a certain poetic justice in the fact that filming of his signature product, the Raison d'etre for what WayWorld would become, was likely what eventually killed off the perverse bastard?

    Yeah, I 'spose...

    George,

I don't think it's necessarily so, but yeah, I agree...it would most certainly be poetic justice. Who knows, maybe old perverts have an unusally high sensitivity to bright lights. I do recall hearing in TWI many times over how the cockroaches would scatter when the light was turned on. Maybe VP's demise was illustrative of why.

For the record, although I was never particularly a VP fan or apologist, I was kinda indifferent to the whole thing, mostly thinking him an eccentric old buffoon that had lost his way somewhere down the line, UNTIL I read Groucho's post about what VP said regarding his daughters and their nipples. When that was corroborated by other posters, that "tore the sheet" for me.

Thanks Groucho et al! Ya done me a service!

Does anyone know why my previous post appears twice here?

  12. It's becoming evident that Pat Robertson, Walter Cronkite and Tom Brokaw all have more clout with God than VPW since they all have probably spent more time under the lights.

Of course they aren't great MOG's, so the adversary wouldn't attack them in such dreadful ways...which brings up the question of why God didn't deliver VP from the attack of the enemy....either way, God must love them more than VPW....right?

I'm calling BS on this. I can't contribute anything over WordWolf's contribution, which is quite accurate, IMHO, except to say studio lights have been in use for decades and decades. Yes, they're very bright and yes, they're hot (which probably contributes more to eye irritation and dryness than UV), but I'm convinced VPW's claim is specious.

    lights.jpg

Rank unbelievers using the lights to no ill effect.

That story is just absurd, yet it still circulates among some offshoots. The myth of VPW's mogginess seems to continue unabated in some circles.

    HACK PTUI!

  14. Herbert W. Armstrong. From what I've read and heard from ex members of his Worldwide Church of God, it was as legalistic to its people and corrupt at its center as The Way International. It also splintered into offshoot groups after Armstrong's death just like TWI.

My mama used to listen to "The World Tomorrow" broadcasts and take "The Plain Truth" mag so subsequently I ended up getting some of their literature when I was in college, but paid no attention to it.

All I remember was there was some scandal involving Garner Ted over womanizing. It seemed like Garner Ted had a lot in common with LCM. Evidently, Garner Ted is still preaching, tho.

Until your post, Mark, I hadn't thought about them in decades. Now that I think about it, when I was sorta active in the Methodist church in my pre TWI days, I remember everyone in the church was into some other outside group that, ostensibly, offered them unique insights into certain things not found in the ordinary church setting. Some got Armstrong literature while others got stuff from Oral Roberts etc. etc. etc. It seems that everyone I knew back then had some sort of peripheral "cult" involvement.

Sheesh, that sure dredged up some ghosts from the past LOL

  15. They disinfect bowling shoes? Really?

VP visited our campus (Rome City) frequently during the last year of his life and never once mentioned a fish hook and for that matter never mentioned cancer. He talked about the damage done to his eyes during the filming of the wonder class (thanks waysider) and even passed the eye around so we could admire the handiwork of the thing. No kidding. I remember being surprised it wasn't round...it was just a curved front piece. Perhaps like a codpiece?

It's truly an honor to know the MOG is keeping an eye out for you.

    I'm envious.

...and yes, in bowling alleys the used to have little lamps with lavendar colored lights and they put the rental bowling shoes on it to disinfect them before replacing them on the shelf.

    EDITED TO ADD THIS...

I did a google and came up with this reference among many.

"Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection units operate by exposing the water to ultraviolet light. This will destroy most bacteria and inactivate viruses, but the process does not remove metals, salts, fibers or minerals. Some manufacturers assert that their UV units will also destroy spores and cysts, but the Environmental Protection Agency feels there is not enough evidence to support these claims......blah blah blah"

Evidently UV emitting lights are still sold for that purpose. They also claim it deodorizes the shoes. I haven't seen this since the 60's, but then I haven't been in many bowling alleys since then, either.

  16. In general, the category of sunlight that is most suspected of contributing to this rare form of cancer is UVB.

UVB has a wavelength range of 280-315nm.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultraviolet

Does anyone here know any specifics regarding the lighting used to film the class?

Comparing the spectral values might be helpful.

I think I read that a 2,500 watt xenon lamp equipped with quartz optics could do such damage, but I'm not sure that's what was used to light the studio for VPW in the filming of his class.

There are lamps that are designed to produce UV. Remember the lights they used to use to disinfect bowling shoes? Maybe those are still used. I don't know, but that's usually done on purpose and ordinary studio lights don't have those characteristics.

  17. I'm very curious here. What kind of lights were used in the filming of that class? I've been around such studio lights (continuous high output) since 1968, including still photo, cine and television and the only place I EVER heard of someone getting their eyes burned so badly, they had to be removed was in TWI.

I'm not saying it couldn't happen, but I just wonder. I knew a man a few years back who, in an emergency situaton, had to use a cutting torch to remove someone from a wrecked vehicle without eye protection. He had laser surgery to clarify his vision and I know that wasn't available to VPW back then, but the only damage was that scar tissue that was removed. I'm sure whoever filmed that class didn't use arc lighting in a studio setup.

One thing I know for sure is that you NEVER position the lights in such a way as to have them directly in the subjects eyes as this would cause your subject to squint and be uncomfortable which would be counter productive. Admittedly, the only time I've ever actually been in front of the lights like that is when taking incident meter readings, but still, they NEVER shine directly into the subjects eyes.

What sort of lights was VPW using then? I've heard that story for years and years and always thought it might be bullshi t (you just never know), but never questioned it until now.

  18. Garth,

I've heard quite a few say that the U.S. should have sided with the Axis then while others claim that we shouldn't have been involved in Europe at all.

The logic being that had we sided with the axis, then Soviet communism would have been destroyed. I'm of the opinion, however, that had that happened, then we would have entered into a cold war with the Axis that, IMHO, would have been a LOT uglier than what we had with the soviets.

I don't know what Wierwilles logic was regarding that, but prior to the war, the Soviets and the Czarist Russians, before them, were every bit as anti semitic as the Nazis.

I don't know a whole lot about VPW and his views as I usually paid little attention to most of the rants and to this day, thank God I never followed thru and went into the corps. I ALMOST did, but, thankfully it never happened.

VPW could easily have had some opinions that were sympathetic to nazism and I'd be somewhat interested in knowing more about that. I was generally appalled at some of the bizarre statements LCM made, but don't remember VPW getting so convoluted in his statements...or at least he wasn't as loud with it, capturing my attention.

The Latin phrase is "Now you see it, now you don't" (more or less). I took Latin for several years from Jr. High school thru college and I used to sit and CRINGE (hair standing straight up) at VPW's occasional references to Latin. Remember when he said in PFAL the word "mortify" (from Mors; mortis = death) meant "blow to smithereens"?

    LOLOLOL

The most recent thing I heard was how the old Rock Band "Iron Butterfly" were believers because "Inna Gadda Da Vida" was Latin for "In the Garden of Eden" (I think "In horto paradisi" would be close, but I don't know the word "Eden")....and this wasn't all that long ago coming from a CFFer...saying he heard it from "Doctor". I KID YOU NOT! The guy actually had the temerity to tell me that.

Anyway, I'm glad Groucho started this thread and am interested in some other folks "take" on this. I'm wondering what sort of apologies he made for Hitle as I never heard any of that.

  19. ...As far as i know, he wasn't a card carrying member of the nazi party...but everything about him...what he believed, his lifestyle, his "apologies for Hitler", his genetic heritage...I think it's a legitimate question.

His total disdain for for anyone who wouldn't "bow down to him"...what do you think?

    Was he a nazi?

As for his lifestyle and his "apologies for Hitler, I know nothing and wouldn't venture an opinion, however being of Rootin' Teuton heritage DOES NOT qualify someone as being Nazi.

    That's a dreadful stretch, Groucho.

BTW, I'm NOT Germanic but of Scottish heritage, so I don't have a dog in that hunt, either.

I'm just sayin' you can't make that kind of judgement.
