  1. Happy Easter everyone!

He is risen! It's a great season to remember Matthew 28:

And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from haven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat on it. His countenance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow. And the guards shook for fear of him, and became like dead men. But the angel answered, and said to the women, Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified.

He is not here; for He is risen,

as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.

And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

Teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo:

I am with you always, even to the end of the age.

  2. Wow

What an awful WOW year! Do you recall his name? The year? Was it around 1976 ish?

Let's see, it was my 9th Corps interim year, must have been 79/80. It was pretty awful, undoubtably the worst year of my life. On top of everything else my Mom died that year and I wasn't able to "leave the field" to be with her. It's taken a lot of His lovingkindness and tender mercies to forgive myself for not being there for her.

Does anyone else remember the "sky is falling, the sky is falling", let's plan on living off the land in the wilderness when the country falls spiel?

  3. Rascal,

It wasn't an "entire W.O.W. family", it was just one. But then, one is plenty when we're talking murder, ain't it?

It happened in Alexander City, Al. in 1979 or early'80 (memory gets a bit hazy now).

It was only a few miles from where I was sent, but I only found out about it after a few beers with

a branch leader, and the alcohol started talking. Nobody was supposed to know.

The Corps "Branch leader" (a serious whackjob from what I could tell) got in an argument with one of his W.O.W.s

and settled it the old fashioned way - and shot him dead. The W.O.W. went home in a pine box and the BL didn't go home at all.

He was still in an Alabama prison last I heard...

I remember that! Hadn't thought about it in so long. I had completely blocked it out of my mind. I was on my interim year as a WOW "branch?" coordinator in Alabama. We were definitely told to "lockbox" what happened. I never knew exactly what happened except that the bc got so teed off at one of the Wows that he shot him dead. I remember that the "leadership" was upset because they had told the murderer's wife to forget about him and move back out of the state but she stayed near the prison where he was incarcerated. They may have been family corps.

Yes, that was such a "great year". I knew that murderer because I was WOW in Tuscaloosa and closest to Alexander City. We had a plan from meetings with the limb coordinator to meet the murderer and his Wow family in the woods and survive off the land when the country was supposed to fall that year. Oh yes, we had our fifty pound sack of millet and maps of the Alabama wilderness where we were supposed to meet when the sh**t hit the fan. Made for a great time, especially when I found out about the murder...

  4. Eeeww. That was so disgusting. I'm still trying to recover from that assault. Thanks for taking care of it so quickly. :eusa_clap: I'm so glad my kids weren't around.

    You guys are the greatest!

  5. You were really cool so you can stay. (P.S. I don't think your that old)

Wow, thanks! Can you tell that to my 15 year old son? Having a teenager really keeps you humble.

I'm still trying to get used to these aliases so I'm not sure who you are, but all the 11th corps were very cool. You guys are fun, I think I'll stay and sip some java with you guys.

  6. me neither thank you god, well except for maybe a backyard campout with my boy, but the house was very close....

I remember Steve Ransom (amazing the names you remember when something triggers a memory peg) when we were done with our "solos or duos or ho-hos or whatever the correct word was) came forth with a huge snake skin that he had killed in his hooch, killed it and skinned it. Who knew he was such an outdoorsman. That's when I got real thankful that I hadn't slept in my hooch.

My idea of a roughing it now is sleeping in a three star hotel.

  7. it was DEFINITELY the company (((((((((((((((((( hugs )))))))))))))))))))))

who was it besides you and me ? i think terry ayers and beatle bailey and who else ????

so very good to see you and the master's son !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ah shucks, thanks for the hug and right back at you. Glad to be here. I can't really remember who else was there, maybe Judy Cunningham? Not sure.

  8. i made a beauuuuuuuuuuuuuutiful hooch

but i didn't fit in it

Oh yeh, mine was really beautiful too, but I was too afraid of snakes and bugs to sleep in it so I slept outside and woke up to pouring rain in my face and nowhere to go to come in from it. Never been so up-close and personal w nature before or since.

  9. i love you and karie

    Hey ExCath,

Love you too. I have a great if fuzzy memory (well it was only 25 years ago) of being on a ROA clean-up crew with you and a bunch of other fun 9th corps. (Wasn’t that you?) We rode around in the back of a big truck picking up really gross, stinky garbage and getting filthy and the weird thing was it was a blast. I think it was the company.

  10. Hi Firefly, I just joined the GS cafe this weekend so I'm a real newbie. I saw your query about Dale Sides and thought I would respond since I've known Dale since 1974 when his WOW family "witnessed" to me in New Orleans. I didn't have much contact with him for quite a few years after that, except he came to Emporia to teach some class when I was in the 9th Corps. I think he probably got carried a way a bit like all of us did with the culture in the Way but I didn't know him well enough to say anything more about that time.

My husband and I left TWI in 1987 and spent a number of years after that trying to figure things out. We met with a few other ex-way people in a home fellowship but it was pretty dead. Then in approx. 1994 a friend invited Dale Sides to come out and teach a class he was giving on Exercising Spiritual Authority. I can honestly say it was a turning point in my life. I got called back to God and actually wanted to join in with the rest of the Church. After Dale's class we joined a real church and started teaching and ministering again, this time not as a little splinter group but joined with others in the body of Christ. I think that Dale is one of a very few ex-way people whose ministries have actually been accepted by top leaders in the body of Christ like C. Peter Wagner, Chuck Pierce and others. I'm not "in" his ministry. In fact as someone else said it's a parachurch ministry and you can't join it. Anyway I wouldn't be nervous about receiving your friend.

(BTW, I really liked your personal statement. I feel pretty much the same way about the years in TWI. And I love Eldredge's books so it must be cool for your hubby to fellowship with him.)

  11. blonde and shorter than sheila?

    Yep

    Was that Sheila Fern?

No, there was another Sheila, McDonald.

Only other Sheila I remember was in my twig ... till she left and became a deprogrammer.

I remember her, she was my roommate in, I think it was Uncle Harry Hall, her name was Toney or something like that.

  12. I saw your tidbit about the Saints ... Your folks are still in New Orleans then? Did they fare OK through Katrina? Most of my friends there had substantial damage, many are rebuilding. The French Quarter was largely high and dry though, and much of uptown.

Hi, All of my immediate family are deceased but I have cousins and an Uncle in New Orleans. My uncle lives on the West Bank which didn't fare too badly but he's in his eighties and had to evacuate for several months. He spent several months "on the road" travelling with my cousin and her family to various friends houses around the country. It was quite an ordeal. My cousin had a house uptown but the roof was damaged and so water and then mold got in the house. It took about a year to make it habitable again. My other cousin's husband passed away in December and I know that stress from the whole ordeal was partly to blame for his death. I know many people are still affected by it. I pray for New Orleans to recover. The successful Saints season was a real shot in the arm for many in the city. Too bad they didn't make it all the way...

  13. Many feathers came from an advance class we had in residence. There was some so called prophet named many feathers on video tape. My twin brother showed up at Emporia for a visit with long hair and was tagged as many feathers. Later like well over twenty years Mrs. wrdsandwrks husband was much of a gentlemen and came and apolagized for the insult. A curses go. Good man!. Many feathers was referred to my twin as I recall. Tallk among yourselves.

Sorry, fellowshipper, I didn't realize it was an insult. I just thought I remembered that some of the "in crowd" used to call you that. Best to you and your wife down under!

  14. OK, I investigated ...Apparently this Socal Mom: Miracles DO Happen is your blog ...That is cool, except you are too smart for me ... still, since you seem patient, maybe we can hang :)I still think we used to talk a little, but can't quite bring it back ...
Hi Bill? Does your last name start with an H? I remember you, I do think we used to talk some. It's nice to hear from some old friends here. You did find my blog, because that's my blurb from it, but the link is to a friend's blog. Here's the link to mine:http://www.allmyways.blogspot.com
  15. Just wanted to say that I know of some great marriages that have lasted from Way days. Sorry to hear about all the broken ones. Since I'm new here I thoght it was a nice prompt for believer marriages that have lasted and one I could respond to positively.

  16. Hey Karie... Wow... you HAVE done a bunch of living. I looked at your blog... very nice.My daughter's name is the same as your daughter's, but spelled differently.And... before going in res for the 9th, I actually lived in Westwood for about 6months....Hope you enjoy the coffee here at the cafe.
Hi Rocky,Thanks for the compliment on the blog. Not sure who you are but glad to hear from you anyway. The coffee here seems really fine. A lot better than the stuff they used to serve in Weirwille. Wow, hadn't though of that in years but me and my friend Sheila used to have these huge plastic cups that we'd fill up with that awful coffee, until we found a room where we could plug our own coffee pot in and keep it going non-stop. I remember we had a great place in the basement of Anderson library that we used to hang out in after meetings or during "self structured veritcal" time. Good to catch up with some fellow 9th Corps!

  17. Hello fellow 9th Corps and friends,

I guess I've been out of the loop for quite a while now, but I just joined the Grease Spot Cafe and wanted to drop by here and say hello. Not sure if if's pc to use names but I don't have any reason not to. I have some great memories of Corps days and experiences. Chuck and I were married in the 9th Corps weddings and are still happily married with 2 great kids, ages 15 and 8. It's kind of interesting explaining to them who all those other people in our wedding pictures are but they don't really know anything about TWI except that we met at a Christian College in Kansas. We left TWI in 1987.

I enjoyed reading all the name puns in the 9th Corps topic posts. A few months ago Chuck and I spent some time trying to list all the 9th Corps we could remember. We thought we came up with most of the names but going through the name puns brought back so many names we had missed.

I'd write more but it's Saturday night and I have to get out and run the stairs in (oh gosh what was the name of that building with the auditorium where I spent many Saturday nights)? to get my aerobic points in before midnight.

    Karie (Tourne) Masterson

  18. Hi, I Just joined the GreaseSpot Cafe last night so I'm new to the forum.

My husband and I have been happily married for 25 years. We met in The Way Corps (9th) and were married in the Corps weddings in 1981. We didn't know each other very well when we got married but I was sure that God had spoken to me and that he was the right man for me. Well God was right. I believe that we were meant to be together. We left TWI ,I believe, in 1987. God has been good to us and I'm thankful for a great marriage to a wonderful man. I really believe that the reason I was blessed to marry the right man is that I surrendered the decision to God in prayer. I remember a time when I was crying on my bed in the dorms at Emporia, crying out to the Lord and telling him that I would never be married if He didn't do it for me. That was during the 1st year in the Corps. Then, shortly before Christmas break of my 3rd year at Emporia I believe that I heard from the Lord. It was out of the blue but I heard distinctly in my spirit that I was going to be proposed to over the Christmas break and that I should accept the proposal. I knew it was from the Lord because I didn't even have a boyfriend at the time and I had no idea who would propose to me. But sure enough, when I was at my Dad's house for the break, I got a call from California from a guy that I had only seen once (for only a few minutes) in a year and a half and we had only been on one "date" a year and a half ago. I was able to accept the proposal because I had been forewarned by the Holy Spirit that it was coming. So we were married and 25 years later we have two great kids and are truly blessed.
