Both like and as are used in similes, but not interchangeably. Briefly, like is used to compare nouns; as is used to compare verbs. A fuller treatment can be found HERE. Using johniam's example, I could say either "Grammar school was like TWI" or "Grammar school brainwashed us as TWI did." Both are similes. George

Like can be a verb ("I like chocolate.") or a preposition ("It smells like chocolate."). It is not a conjunction, although it is often used as (note: not like) one. Use as, instead. George Also note that when a word is used to represent the word itself, rather than its meaning, it is to be italicized or underlined.

Worf was not amused. I'm sure there was also a main plot involving some dire threat to the Enterprise, but I can't remember it. George
