  1. That specific wouldn't apply, but others would, or might, depending on how they were presented in court. There was no signed contract that said the corps was "signed up for a lifetime of Christian service." It wasn't anything they SIGNED- it was a SLOGAN for the corps. IF they HAD signed such a document (which they didn't), it would be unenforceable to be signed up for "a lifetime" for a program, especially with such a nebulous requirement as "Christian service." That is far too VAGUE. Working in soup kitchens is "Christian service." Mission fields are "Christian service." And so on, and so on. "Misrepresentation" is a separate issue, and violation of twi's fiduciary responsibilities are completely different issues-but applicable to prosecuting twi. The main reasons to sue twi are not "breaking contracts". That's a little like bringing in Al Capone on income tax evasion. It's true and legal, but hardly the main reason to bring in the criminal.
  2. I think EVERY country has had someone hide out there at some point or other, but a reputation for being a refuge for wanted criminals is more a fiction than a reality for any country. (Running to Brazil is as realistic, today, as running to Mexico and being shocked when you're caught and extradited. Most countries don't really look like their media impressions- England is modern, Mexico isn't an old Western set...) IF he slipped the net into Brazil, he'd have to live completely "off the grid" and sponge completely off the followers. That's less likely every year with information nets getting tighter every year. He's practically be under "house arrest" since he doesn't speak Portuguese and would stand out quickly between not looking Brazilian and having a US accent even if he DID try to speak Portuguese. He can make a MUCH more successful fade into the background if he stays in the US somewhere, even if it's an island of the mainland US.
  3. Ok, to move this along, "Batman the Movie". The moustachioed guy was Cesar Romero. As a kid, I never noticed the moustache under the makeup. The cast-change was Julie Newmar replaced by Lee Meriwether. (Julie couldn't clear her schedule for the shooting.) Given that 3 different recurring villains were played by more than 1 actor, none of whom looked like each other, this didn't seem peculiar to me when I was the movie. Then again, I saw it on television years later. (I wasn't ALIVE when the movie hit the theaters.)
  4. Or maybe just for her character.
  5. Wow! I always thought that movie was meant to cash in on the show! I heard that somewhere....apparently incorrectly.....
  6. Ok, that narrows the field a lot, and I have a chance, now. (Slim, but I have one.) "Star Trek The Original Series?" "The Brady Bunch"?
  7. "I've seen the footage. The only thing you really fight for is yourself. You're not the guy to make the sacrifice play, to lay down on a wire and let the other guy crawl over you." "I think I would just cut the wire." "Always a way out..." " You really have got a lid on it, haven't you? What's your secret? Mellow jazz? Bongo drums? Huge bag of weed?" "This is out of line, Director. You're dealing with forces you can't control." "You ever been in a war, Councilman? In a firefight? Did you feel an over-abundance of control?" "They needed a push in the right direction. They got it."
  8. We all know some shows that most people here would never remember. If an initial clue shows people have NO idea (especially 1 season shows), it helps to keep adding clues until we get there, and it helps to admit that sometimes we won't get it unless the clue is blatant because we've barely heard of a show-if ever. When I post on less well-known shows, I like to put clues for 2 shows at once and saying someone guessing one will take the round. When I post on really obscure shows, I like to put clues for 3 shows, since it gives some hope of a chance to people who are, after all, TRYING to solve them.
  9. AFAIK, it's a violation of the General Law of Contracts to sign someone up for a contract who has not signed up for a contract. They were billed for contracted services they never requested. If there is no Offer and Acceptance, there is no Contract. The people never AGREED to purchase the services, so there was no Offer and Acceptance. If they HAD, this would fall under both Misrepresentation and Clean Hands, but neither applies in the absence of a Contract-either could void a Contract. So, QED, what he did was illegal. Naturally, if we had a contract lawyer chat with us here, he might say something I'm unaware of, but I strongly doubt he'd look at everything I did and come to the OPPOSITE conclusion. (Someone showing him a little MIGHT get him to make a statement that didn't apply here, for example, but not if he had all the facts.) Most do. With twi and ex-twi, that changes once you're an insider. Insiders often don't get the "nice guy wants money" thing, they get the "God's protection racket wants their cut" thing that vpw started and lcm exemplified.
  10. Oh. So, IF he could leave the country and somehow get there without being tracked, he could sponge off of them. That gives a reason to think he'd WANT to hide there. It's not like that's the country of refugees, it's the country where he has assets. But the first point of "wanted criminals can't just buy plane tickets, go through customs, and be ignored" still applies. Interesting story you linked to-although hardly shocking by now based on what we already knew about the guy.
  11. This is 2014. Every year, it gets harder to travel from country to country without leaving a digital trail. If he flew out of the US, then there is documentation of when and where he left, and details of the plane tickets, etc. More likely, he's hiding in the US with his head down. There's so many things he would need to do to hide in Brazil- like SPEAK PORTUGUESE, and get currency- which is a good trick if you can't present ID and can't access an account in your name to do it. Hiding in the US, he can sponge off his adherents and keep his head down. Frankly, it's no different than how Osama Bin Laden managed to hide as long as he did. Got something personal against Brazil? I'm just curious how that idea just dropped out of nowhere...
  12. Huge bag of weed?"
  13. The words were added every time the Nazis did a Nazi salute. Someone would make the Nazi salute with hand out, and announce the grass grew that high. They made a joke out of the Nazi salute. Unaltered, it was "Heil Hitler." They swapped out the word "Hitler" and made the phrase into the phrase "medicinal herb." Klink and Schultz, respectively. Making the place snow-bound for the entire series made it easier to make stock footage. A repeated line. Really.
  14. Glad you were convinced- that IS the show.
  15. This TVland-era syndicated show has aired in different countries. When it aired (airs???) in Germany, the dubbing track has some added words. To be specific, all the time, the characters apparently say "The grass grows this high!" A common saying at the time of the story was commonly ALTERED- in Germany- and in English would have meant "medicinal herb", which had absolutely no relevance to what the characters actually said. (Why?) Of the main characters of the show, one had previously been a bookkeeper and the other the president of a toy company before the show and their current "occupations." 2 characters once traveled to London, and several traveled to Paris. The fake snow was sometimes white salt, but later it was all just white paint. Nicknames for the "jolly jokers" included "Goldilocks", "Papa Bear", and "Little Red Riding Hood", apparently all assigned arbitrarily because there seemed to be no pattern to it. "What is this man doing here????" Actors who appeared during the series' run included Gavin Mac Leod, William Christopher, Alice Ghostley, Hans Conried, Joe Tata, and Harvey Keitel. Really.
  16. "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen." (And women.)
  17. This sounds familiar, but I'm not getting it.
  18. You actually have 2 things to go on, even though they're really small things. It is possible to figure it out just from them, even if you've never heard that piece of trivia.
  19. It might well be a quote from Corps Week. However, that was never a movie. (Would have been something, though...) It is indeed "Network."
  20. A claim lacking any substance. vpw had no background in the military by ANYONE's definition. He didn't serve, wasn't in the Guard, wasn't in the Reserves, and was never ROTC. Anything he CLAIMED was about the military was taken from the media. How'd you like someone's supposedly sufficient understanding about your job or your hobbies to be based entirely on movies? There are lots of programs for leadership training. A number are in the military in various branches. A number are on college campuses. A number are out in the world at large. vpw skipped all of them- sounded like voluntary work and that was against his moral code....
  21. Neither can I, but that's not what I said.... words were ADDED, words not in the script.
  22. This syndicated show has aired in different countries. When it aired (airs???) in Germany, the dubbing track has some added words. To be specific, all the time, the characters apparently say "The grass grows this high!"
  23. "You've got to say, 'I'm a HUMAN BEING, GodD*it! My life has VALUE!' So I want you to get up now. I want all of you to get up out of your chairs. I want you to get up right now and go to the window. Open it, and stick your head out, and yell, 'I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!' "
  24. Jesus Christ: "The greatest leader will be a SERVANT." vpw:"The greatest leader is the greatest FOLLOWER." Small but critical distinction.
