Rocky, you “suppose” victor’s intent was constraint of listener’s minds? I’m surprised. I thought that had been established — the 2nd time did it. I think understanding that phrase as a command is insightful. It’s so often repeated. It’s a mantra. It’s subtle, cunning. One is unaware they are obeying the command when they choose not to go beyond what they have been taught. They are obedient doulos of sound mind when not going beyond the teaching. The whole point is to NOT go beyond. Surely, you CAN, but he doesn’t want you to, so you don’t. You will be out of the household or family or protection… It’s a command, phrased as a suggestive aphorism.
