  1. I've been told the Dept of Consumer Affairs gets better results than the Better Business Bureau. I'd tell BOTH groups. =================== If nobody can get your money back for you, I'd look into suing them in Small Claims Court. Legally, you are entitled to pay a fair price for a product as advertised and free of defects.
  2. Some people are real tetchy about it, and I may be one of the loudest. I don't think most care too much, unless you start piling a stack of them in the wrong forum. In the "About the Way" forum, it woul be a LOT easier to direct you to other threads on related subjects to what you asked, and people looking to discuss this would be able to find it. I'm sure you knew that already. :)-->
  3. [WordWolf in boldface.] [sadly, yes, I agree with you there. Inflammatory statements DO happen around here. However, I do NOT agree that they SHOULD happen here. We are adults, and do NOT need to resort to insults and similar things when communicating. I think better of almost all the posters here than to think they can't communicate without insulting people they disagree with. There are new arrivals, lurkers, and old timers, trying to heal wounds dealt them by life and twi here. To expect so little of ourselves that we can't behave civilly does them and us a disservice. I owe myself better than that, and I prefer to give better than that, even to total strangers. Perhaps we see this differently than each other.]
  4. If making the statement causes Zix to ask that the bigotry be kept to himself, the obvious inference is that he is calling the statement bigotted, although he has not _technically_ done so.That being said, I find the statement offensive and inflammatory as well. *thinks* I'll have to disagree with you on that point, Oakspear. The statement was that the post was "offensive." The comment that followed concerned the poster's "bigotry". Were the two connected? Yes. Were the two identical? There, I'd have to disagree. vpw was never caught actually making anti-Semitic statements that I know of. (For the sake of this discussion, let's presume he was never caught at them and move on.) He DID, however, make some statements that demonstrated an anti-Semitic MENTALITY. They statements THEMSELVES were not necessarily anti-Semitic. Related, but not identical. Of course, you may disagree with me, and think he's directly saying the statement was bigoted. Me, I think he was saying the statement was a result of a bigoted mentality, resulting in an offensive statement. Of course, I'm not the mog here- feel free to draw your own conclusions.
  5. A review of the "About the Way" forum threads and the twi Doctrine archives should give you all the content you need without subjecting you to the actual books. You DON'T need the books. Really. Oh, and next time, please post this in "About the Way" since this is "About the Way". The Open forum is for everything that there isn't a specific forum for.
  6. I'm currently fiddling with FireFox. So far, so good. We're still getting to know each other. Seems for every thing I preferred on IE, there's one I like better on FireFox. Plus, it's nice not to have to sweat security as much.
  7. He said it was "offensive." I'll add that it's inflammatory. Neither of us said the statement is bigotry. (The attitude BEHIND the statement might be bigotry, but that's another issue.)
  8. But if you have BOTH, why not use BOTH- each when it's best for the job at hand?
  9. Was there a reason beyond him being of Germanic descent and wanting to legitimize the Nazis, which meant he had to discredit Jews? vpw was a brilliant salesman, but I find, in 20/20 hindsight, he was unremarkable beyond that.
  10. Just to elaborate, Fonzie, until then, was shown to ride motorcycles, but when did he EVER learn to waterski at ALL? It's when a show adds things that produce the comment "WTF?" Other moments that have produced similar responses include bringing in a cute kid to try to extend the life of a show. ("Cousin Oliver", anyone?)
  11. If vpw taught the British Israel thing, I didn't hear about it. "The Myth of the Six Million" says that the numbers of people killed in the Holocaust are inflated, and the nazis weren't THAT bad, actually. I just explained "the Thirteenth Tribe" one post back.
  12. I'll save you the trouble. We discussed this on a thread once. The main premise of the book was that the modern "Jews" are genetically different from the historical "Jews", and are all instead descended from the Khazars. This was disproven by taking DNA samples from various Jews and doing comparisons. They are genetically the SAME people. The end. :)--> (If you need a smarter answer than that, dig for the old thread or start a new one and ask for our resident scientists to check in.)
  13. Well, we knew it wasn't a "materials fee". I took it for $40, got the Orange and White Books, the syllabus, and "Christians Should Be Prosperous." Retail, that's about how much it would have cost for the books, and the 4th book was meant to encourage me to give more money. Those who paid over $50 were hosed, plain and simple. Paying $80 is plainly meant to send money to hq, paying $100 even moreso. Since their only expense was the books-which they did NOT pay retail for- and the tapes, which were reused- they cleared a LOT of profit, even at $40 per student. ============== (Edited to correct obvious typos.)
  14. vpw tended to tread lightly on subjects he knew so little about that he couldn't even FAKE it convincingly. Let me get back to you on this one. Frankly, though, I'd consider checking out some Christian websites and messageboards on this. Some of them are quite good.
  15. Actually, it's more of a technical concept. If you'd been subjected to pfal Session I or the first 4 chapters of the Blue Book like the rest of us, you'd know that vpw taught that the volume of one's believing was critical to seeing results. With big enough believing, one can see instant miracles, with not-so-big believing, one can see somewhat slower (but still very fast) results. Thus, a mega-believer could see their arm heal within seconds to a minute, while a big believer could see it heal overnite. We were taught that WE were the critical element in receiving things from God, and to relegate God to a secondary role as a sort of quartermaster or supply sergeant or requisitions officer.
  16. I didn't say you were wrong. (???) You said Arlo said the song lasts 18 m, 20 s-same as the Watergate Tape gap. I said I'd see if he was right.
  17. It's about freaking.... I mean, I'm blessed to hear that! :)-->
  18. I'll have to check exactly how long the song lasts. When he sings the original, he keeps highballing the time. ("I've been singing this song for 45 minutes. I can sing for another 45. I'm not proud. Or tired.") I always render that "25 minutes" also, since that's a LOT closer to the exact time. I still consider that song a Thanksgiving tradition. I also consider it a handy way to kill 20 minutes, if recited. I think the website dedicated to this song is http://www.arlo.net (Well, this song and other things Arlo Guthrie related.) It has some stuff on Officer Obie I found interesting. Tom? It's one side of the cassette, too. Some people still use those....
  19. That's not such an impossible task, so long as the ground rules were clear, agreed-upon, and enforced. (For example, a "no profanity" rule posted, which, if violated, would result in an account suspension, and banning for repeat offenses. That's just one example.) Otherwise, posters might think "anything goes" and dive for a jugular. =========================== In other news, somewhere online I saw a one-panel cartoon. Frodo, from about midway thru "Fellowship of the Ring", in the House of Elrond Half-Elven, in Rivendell. Frodo's just beginning to wake up from his ordeal and poisoning. Elrond's standing a few feet away, dressed as Elrond, with dark sunglasses added. "Mr BAGGINS! So good of you to JOIN us...."
  20. Please point out the purposes of this forum and ask them to be mindful of its stated and understood purposes when posting. As a board dedicated to information and to recovery, it may have more in common with AA than with boards they're used to.
  21. *high-fives Pirate* But no fair! It's never named in the song, only the movie!
  22. You're just mad that you don't know the name of the restaurant, just the name of the song....which is why it's called "Alice's Restaurant"....
  23. BTW, Refiner, People who visit the GSC are either investigating twi, or looking to recover from exposure to twi without a hazmat suit. There is a third group of people: drive-by posters. Those are people who show up, and, in their first post, advertise their website, messageboard, or doctrine. Thus, the post is a commercial. Generally speaking, they tend to get it from every direction, and so they leave. (Which is what we wanted in the first place. We don't like ads here.)
  24. I'm bothered that some non-Christians have to, for lack of a better word, characterize all Christians as uneducated knuckle-dragging Luddites who have no understanding of how the world works and are incapable of linear thought. I'm bothered that some Christians feel the need to oversimplify their positions and not have intelligent discourse with more polite seekers and dissenters. No, I'm not thinking of anyone at the GSC. I've seen worse out there, actually. Some people are quite eager to level blanket insults at the opposing POV. (Well, I'm not thinking PRIMARILY of the GSC, anyway.)
