There were three critical threads. The first was a PFAL review that tried to explore all the issues raised by the class. Jerry Barrax gets full credit for starting that one. I came up with the other two: The Blue Book Review was a walk through The Bible Tells Me So, from my perspective. I don't even agree (today) with everything I wrote in that thread (14 or so years ago). But the central idea -- looking at everything and deciding thoughtfully what is right and what is wrong -- is still a good one. The last one was Actual Errors in PFAL, the ultimate exercise in nitpicking that only existed to prove one single point, namely, that PFAL and other writings of VPW do not live up to their own requirements for what it means for something to be God-breathed. Today, I would probably not participate in any of those threads, much less start two of them.

Just got to thinking the other day about the guy who faked sign language next to Obama and all those other speakers at the Mandela memorial celebration this week. All sorts of hand movements pretending to be interpreting what the speaker was saying. But the reality was he was "speaking" nonsense. It wasn't a language. I'm not aware of how many forms of sign language there are, but it's pretty clear he wasn't "speaking" any. Hey, maybe he was free gesticulating -- you know, making hand movements in some long-forgotten form of sign language no longer in use today. That doesn't negate it as a language. Prove he wasn't signing a real language! Go on, prove it! Just... on my mind.

TWI never had a lasting effect on culture. It barely had an effect on American religious history. It was a failed cult movement. If you compare Seventh Day Adventists, Jehovah's Witnesses and the Mormon church to TWI in terms of their impact to TWI, 70+ years into their history, it's no contest. The average person knows who those people are. The average person has never heard of TWI. At all. TWI doesn't even rise to the level of being disrespected by American culture, because to be disrespected, you first have to be acknowledged, and TWI has barely been acknowledged. It could still reignite, of course. But at the moment, its influence on culture is as significant as The Neverending Story II's influence on cinema.

Or just type the words Treasure of the Sierra Madre First one to do it wins. P.S.: I looked it up, and in Stripes, Sgt. Hulka says "I'm getting too old for this sh!t." Close, but not exactly the same line as in Lethal Weapon

Character 1: "There she was, just walking by... you know how I like it when they walk... I couldn't help it... it just sort of slipped out!" Character 2: "Actually, he sort of screamed at her. It was a bit frightening." Character 3: "What did you do then?" Character 1: "What else? I ran for it!"
