Michael was studying to be a lawyer, and was in the "Lawyers of Tomorrow" program or something. This did nothing to help when something happened and he was arrested. (I forget why.) The desk sergeant introduced a dose of reality to the situation by finding it irrelevant in getting Michael out of a jail cell. (Probably very accurate for desk sergeants.)
