What's a Remembrance Reception?

New one to me. A co-worker is going to a funeral and the notice said:

"After the funeral there will be a remembrance reception. Please be determined."

Anyone know what this is? What's expected? What does "be determined" mean?

It sounds like a new PC way to say, "There will be a wake..."

I wonder if the folks that wrote this are from this country...

I would take "be determined" as meaning, "be counted." In other words, RSVP...

In my family, it is common to gather after a service to console each other..this was open to anyone who attended services. we usualy would reserve a banquet facility or a private room in a restaurant.

When I was a kid, I remember going to"old-country" style wakes.

After the funeral service and the interment at the cemetery, people would gather somewhere to have what I can only best describe as a party.

There was lots and lots of good food(usually prepared by the attendees), music, laughter and reminiscing.

It was not a time of sadness.

It was a time of remembering and celebrating the joys that person had brought to the lives of the attendees.

It was a time to move on past the solemness of the interment.

I don't know if that's what this refers to but it reminded me of those "wakes" of days long ago.

When my good friend died a few years ago, his family did the same. Close friends were invited for food and talk. It was a good time.

When Mr. Garden was in college, his elderly mainden lady aunt died. So we went up to the northwest corner of the staet where she had a funeral mass. Then she had stipulated in her will that anyone who came to her funeral got to go to a country club, I believe in St. Mary's, for dinner on her. So off we went. There was an open bar, and I recall some really nice food.

I had never met the lady, but her wake was enjoyed by all.
