Good Times (?) George

When this movie came out, everyone told me "It really makes you think." That is the LAST thing I want in a movie, so I haven't seen it. Action? Yes. Comedy? Yes. Sex? Yes. But "thinking"? No. This is Chrissy Metz's (whoever THAT is) fifth saddest movie of all time. For her role in this film, the star became the one and only Best Actress Oscar winner to produce and direct a Best Picture nominated film. (Taken from IMDb, this statement is awkwardly phrased. The actress won Best Actress for a different film. Though nominated for several, including Best Picture, this movie garnered no Oscars.) One of the main characters is a world class violinist. The actor portraying him did not play violin but watched two professionals perform the piece he would play in the film. Then he "finger-synched" the piece almost perfectly. A week after this movie opened wide in North America on Christmas of 1991, the star phoned a Columbia Pictures executive at 7:00 A.M. New Year's Day demanding that a hedge on Sunset Blvd needed trimming. It wasn't blocking the film title but obscuring her "Directed by" credit on the billboard. Chris O'Donnell, who would soon become a star in Scent of a Woman, won the role of the star's teenage son, Bernard, but Pat Conroy didn't think he was right. Looking through photos of other young actors, he picked one out, telling the star that she should hire him instead. The actor was the star's own son. It's about dealing with suicide. George

I just checked Imdb. They have Steve Carell listed, Fred Willard, Seth Rogen, Ben Stiller, Kathryn Hahn, Will Ferrell, Danny Trejo, and Christina Applegate, but NOT Harrison Ford nor Kristen Wiig. How confident are you that they were in this movie? *checks* Those two were in the sequel, apparently, but Ben Stiller and Danny Trejo weren't at the least.

I have no idea what movie this is. That comment about a star so narcissistic she (we know it's a she) made that phone call makes me think of Barbra Streisand. She has to have an ego big enough to inspire the Streisand Effect, and be big enough she had the phone# of the executive...and maybe to think someone wouldn't just hang up on her with that phone call. If not Streisand, some woman with as big an ego, and that narrows the possibilities considerably. So, I'm thinking Streisand. But that's all I've got. Oh- if I'm right, and Raf came to the same conclusion, then he's thinking it's not "Yentl", and I agree it's not that film.

1) oldiesman started the thread, and had the opening post. You can tell it wasn't me, because it was heavy on the AI content. 2) If, for some reason, someone thinks me and oldies are the same person, we're not. There's still a few people who've met us both (like Raf) and there was a time on this board, long ago, where we tended to be diametrically opposed on many threads, almost to the point of a fist fight. (Had we been in a bar or something, I was sure at least once it would have escalated to the alley outside.) We still disagree on quite a bit, but not to that degree. 3) Actually addressing the question, Although not an official Harvest Festival, I think that the State Fair or County Fair practiced in a number of places acts as a de facto Harvest Festival. The traditional events include judging produce (like pumpkins) and livestock (like hogs) and contests like pie eating and so on. I know the one in Texas, at least, is in early October- possibly to avoid conflicting with Thanksgiving, and with Halloween. But for a place not dependent upon a harvest, it's pretty close to a harvest time. If it's a coincidence, it's an interesting one.

I think U.S. only celebrates Thanksgiving as a national holiday so those who wish to use that day as equivalent to Sukkot/Feast day probably do that...

Do US citizens customarily celebrate Harvest Festival? Would be approximately equivalent to Sukkot/Feast of Ingathering in OT. A celebration of the end of harvest and the year's fruitfulness, and preparation for the longer hungrier winter months. (I know US "thanksgiving" as now practised has a bit of a different history, but even from WW's opening post, it appears that that thanksgiving was based on harvest festival)
