Diets that work... Got any?
Wacky Funster replied to Dot Matrix's topic in Health, Wellness, and Fitness
Hey Dot. I am approaching the 3 week mark today...and got on the scale. I've lost 12 pounds now...and rarely have carbo cravings. But, having a broken foot, I haven't exercised, except sit ups, and my tummy looks like goey's hailstorm --> I have been very strict on this diet. Last week, I started putting about 6 raspberries in diet jello...and took one leaf of fresh spinach that I feed my lops (lopped earred bunny rabbits)...my pee sticks are deep purple (the good sign). As of today, Monday, I will begin bigger, more nutritious organic salads...stay on the 6 berries, and gradually add more carbos, check the pee sticks, until I lose 18 more pounds. I go to the doc again today for x-rays, and hopefully my foot is better, so I can walk a tad...and tone the bod. Exercise is major importance lest we be lumpy people. I hope you are doing well on this diet. Some people can't handle it, physically. I have clients who lose remarkably on WW. Not all body types are alike. Because I am hypoglycemic, this diet seems to work for me most excellently. How are you doing? Just wondering. :)--> -

krysilis...good deal...smart woman :)--> I thought of you today. I am naming our workshop after you..."Krysilis"...I guess it means the cocoon from which the butterfly emerges. I've been asked to run a workshop with a local psychotherapist...for 8 women... The money is great...and...it's the work that I'm best at doing. It's March 22nd...first day of Spring too :)--> I guess that's another way to make extra money... -

Hawkeye...that reminds me... When growing up, my best friend across the street...her dad was the head of the science dept. at the college behind our houses. Her mom, raised and cultivated fruit flies in her basement. I kid you not. All different breeds of them...she would keep them separated... She made bundles, selling vials of these fruit flies to colleges all over the country. Apparently, they use them for teaching genetics and cross breeding purposes. They are easy to keep, and breed quickly for students to collect data. (Good idea with the worms...I think I'd leave the fireflies alone tho) :)--> -
Thanks Wild Thang... More home grown being sent your way ;)-->

Great idea Rottiegirl ;)--> Well...I have a few businesses going...but, recently was asked by the local organic farm to teach a few classes: indoor wreath making (using self grown dried stuff), jewelry making (made easy) and Ukrainian Egg Decorating- from now til Easter. Don't know if I'll make much...but, it'll get me out and about networking... This is a Brainstorming Thread... Let 'er rip :)-->

Diets that work... Got any?

Have you actually READ the Atkins book? He doesn't advocate NO carbos...you build them in as you go along...with leafy veggies and berries. My mom was a nutritionist and basically raised me on the Zone type diet. My health is excellent. The "flu" and "common cold" isn't even in my repetoire...I'm never sick...and have had awesome building blocks for my body. I still think that everyone's body is different. When I wasn't dieting...and just working out 2 hours a day (which I did for 10 years after abandoning my cigarettes and coffee) I didn't lose an ounce of weight. I do believe the saunas I took helped bleed the disgusting nicotine residue out of my pores, but, other than that, I toned...didn't lose a pound. My metabolism has always been slow...runs in the family. Exercise is fantastic, but alone it doesn't work for everyone...especially women. As we all know, mens' metabolisms are always faster and most lose weight with less effort than women. Dot. I have lost 7 pounds...it's been 10 days. However, I am not exercising (except a few sit ups) due to my sprained foot, which I need to get an x-ray for tomorrow, because it isn't healing and is still swollen. :(--> I hesitate losing anymore, due to the "hail storm" effect goey was talking about ;)-->. So, I may increase some veggies, just to slow the process. My pee sticks? I covet Sudo's sticks. Mine are NEVER deep purple, but still a light plum. That's ok tho...the slower the weight loss, the better overall...so, I'm not complaining. At least I am building some better eating habits then sitting here in GS eating ice cream and/or cheez-its. How are you doing? Hey...today's the super bowl...and I'm craving something different...may get me some fried chicken wings...as a special treat, but, I won't veer that far from the basic diet. Happy Eating!!! P.S. After losing, I plan on more organic salads with my protein...and keep the carbs whole grains. Atkins isn't forever...but, it sure helps find the balance or protein/carbs for me. P.P.S. I also take the special vitamins Atkins promotes. They seem to help. I feel pretty perky and healthy. -

NOOOOOOOOO...NO PILLS!!!! They'll kill ya, I tell ya!!! Dot...don't lose heart...those last 10 pounds are the hardest...You're doing good if you lose 1/2 pound a week for that. Sorry, Zix...balanced diets don't work for alot of women. I hear ya, but, it just doesn't work. You may wanna break up that salad... Are you exercising too? Don't lose heart, Dot, or slit your wrists...actually, the slower you lose, the better it is for you anyways, and the more likely you'll be able to keep it off. What's your hurry? ;)--> -

Golly Gee, Dot...I just lost 6 pounds in 6 days!!! I'm sure it's all water, and I can't exercise at the moment, but, I have 15 to go...the toning is the key, for me. I find the longer I eat meat, the less I crave food period. Today I had cream with diet polar double chocolate fudge soda. It's a real treat and zero carbs. Anyone have any special food concoctions to help us through the tough times? Keep doing, Dot...one day at a time. Have you done ham and swiss cheese roll ups yet? Yummmm -
Words of Wisdom-Martin Luther King, Jr.

Thanks Golfie...went great with my morning coffee :)--> -
Being Martin Luther King Day, I came across this quote: "If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music, or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well." Whatever you do, be a good one :D--> [This message was edited by Wacky Funster on January 20, 2003 at 16:38.]

Diets that work... Got any?

Sure, Dot...you're gonna have to sacrifice your smoothies... In fact, that smoothie is probably 4x the intact of carbos you need for one day, not to mention all the sugar!!! Fruit is nice...but...it's fattening for certain body types. pee sticks = urine reagent strips You can get those at any local pharmacy. They're rather expensive, about $12 for a month or 2 suppy. It measures the ketone in your urine. The darker the color of the stick (after you've peed on it), the more fat you are burning... When you start to add the carbos slowly, it will register EXACTLY what amount of carbo intact you can take in and not gain weight. They are the key to this diet, if you make this diet (which eventually turns into the Zone diet) a way of life. Atkins teaches you how to stay in YOUR zone. Everyone's zone is different, that's why the strips are so valuable. I, for one, feel much more vital and happy when I eat high protein. Starch seems to weight me down. Atkins in a minute: (plus mega liters of water) Phase 1: 2 weeks- below 20 grams of net carbs per day. Eat lots of meat and fats. Phas 2: Ongoing weight loss- gradually increase your carbo intake in increments of 5 grams (non starchy veggies, berries) The first week here, moveup to 25 grams of net carbs per day. If the strips tell you you are still losing weight, increase to 30 grams and so forth until weight loss stops for a few days in a row. Stay at this level until 5-10 pounds from your target weight. Phase 3: Pre Maintenance. When within 5-10 pounds of your target weight, each week, add more grams (as much as 10 carbs)...gradually introduce other fruits, grapefruit, kiwi, melon, whole grains and yams... Maintain this for a month til you have gradually lost those last few pounds. Phase 4: Stay within this 40-120 gram range as a way of life. Increased physical activity will allow you to raise the amount. I am on day 5 right now...the first few days are murder, because you crave carbos mucho. But, today I'm barely hungry. Just had a can of white albacore tuna and mayo...yummmmmmm :)--> I have sprained my foot, so can't exercise along with it. The strips aren't measuring me losing weight yet, but...it's coming. -

Hi Dot. I've never found in my reading that Atkins doesn't promote veggies and fruits!!! That is a misconception. The first 2 weeks are strict on proteins and fats, but, then starting the 3rd week he advocates adding green leafy veggies...pee on the pee sticks (so you know what the safe carbo intake for YOUR body is)...then from the 4th week on, it's maintenance and FINDING THE BALANCE of protein and carbs for YOUR PARTICULAR BODY. People read him wrong. And...recent research has praised him...and he's been on all the talk shows recently readvocating his findings. He's not unhealthy. Atkins is no different from the zone...it just gives you a jump start. I am on day 3. I'm getting the carbo cravings now, and am resisting like all get out. Did anyone mention the 10 glasses of water a day? Aerobic exercise is needed too...and anaerobic so all the inchage of skin doesn't turn to a flabby muck...heheheheheh Those pee sticks are the trick tho. They make or break the diet for me. Happy Eating!!! -
