Well, first... that's not a P & L. It's a non-profit balance sheet. IF we knew the composition of the investments, we could reasonably test the assumptions. Do we know what has happened with Lucent over the last year or so? It didn't necessarily match the overall performance of the stock market.... but I don't know. Also, we don't know what they did as far as changes in operating expenses.

Well, as much as I'd like to say that's good news, the economy has been down the tubes (do you really think most twi slaves make their money in the stock market?) and $6,000 (approximate difference between the two years) is not a material change when compared to $49 million. My point is that this report does not tell us that they have taken a nose dive in followers.

Ok, I found the original complaint filing, as posted at excultworld.com Basically, there are several causes of action with familiar themes to most GSers. Fraud, misrepresentation, psychological manipulation and emotional distress, but one alleges violation of Tennessee comsumer protection laws. Now, as a "church" I agree, it will be extremely difficult to obtain a favorable judgement for the plaintiffs. It would seem that one cannot simply say they have been distressed, but actually must prove psychological injury. Intuitively, that would seem next to impossible to prove in tangible terms. However, fraud and violation of consumer protection laws is an angle I figure few of us are familiar with such suits. It still seems like a tough case to prove, more so than the obvious sexual harrassment of employees things that may have been at issue in the other suits we know about. But, because this is new ground, I won't rain on the Peeler's parade, but still think it's a long shot. The precedent would be very powerful if Peeler's win. And not just for twi. So, on issues apart from fraud and consumer protection law violations, I would bet that twi would get help from other religious groups with appeals to any hypothetical judgement.

I've read through this thread and cannot find anywhere anyone saying what the Peeler's complaint claims. I have read where several people say they don't believe the Peelers will prevail. How can one even guess unless we know what the suit charges and asks for? Does anyone know this information?

And a jury trial is not mandatory. It is something Doug could have waived the right to. So, I agree with Radar that this is to Doug's advantage. Frankly, this appears to be an effort to force twi's hand. Because otherwise, the most that probably would have happened is Doug agree to pay a fine and go home.
