    Upgrading

Posters cannot change their own Display Name. That is the handle you chose to use. But you can change your User Name. That is the name you log-in with. When we move to the new forums, the name that will transfer as your handle is your User Name, NOT your Display Name, which is your handle here. If your User Name, which you CAN change, is something other than your handle, please change it so it is the same as your handle. Some people have used their own names as their User Name. If you don't want your name as your handle, then please change it so that your User Name is the same as your Display Name.

    Naming Names.

I'll start with where we agree. 3. Absolutely. No exceptions. 2. Tough call. It might be time to go over personal safety precautions like being careful not to post too much private information that others can use against you. It's nice to think that we are among friends but too often we are not. When you say 'hurt someone else' if the 'hurt' is something real, like threats of injury, they should be banned. What are you thinking of as far as hurting someone else? 1. Maybe the person never reads grease spot so how do they know? When they sometimes do read grease spot and read about themselves they send an email and ask us to delete all the references to them which is very time consuming to find the posts. I would rather they not be named to begin with. I would also like to add that even though there has been some controversy over using the moderator alert, it is very helpful to the moderators when a potential problem is pointed out. No one has time to read all the threads. Steve, I was going to answer your question but Krysilis already did. Raf, Thank you for expanding on some very valid reasons for keeping names to a minimum. Someone once suggested that it is wise not to post anything that you do not want read back to you in court. I don't think any of us wants the hassle of defending ourselves in court. Linda, Good points.

Cindy! Those are good points, and your not making trouble. That's part of why we want it discussed. It's hard to separate out issues of privacy from telling the "other side of the story," which is where the moderators are getting a headache. If someone else's "other side of the story" includes things that happened with/to you, and they have an axe to grind, should it be aired out here? That's what we're trying to figure out. Also Greasespot has a long tradition of "protecting the victim." If so, then where does the "victim's" privacy fit in. Like maybe they don't want their names announced if something happened years ago with them and a TWI leader. That's why we're putting it out here. Where is the line?
  7. Please do not identify victims by name unless they have identified themselves.

    Naming Names.

What names are acceptable to be printed in full: All Trustees/Directors, past & present "Disguised" names, meaning using initials or asterisks: Current - cabinet members corps coordinators spokesmen region coordinators leaders of offshoots For Anyone Else: Use title or position (no names, even disguised). I have a real problem seeing some joe-blow low level branch leader or WOW family coordinator lambasted or humiliated by name in a thread when this person may be long out of TWI. Substituting an asterisk for a vowel does little to hide who we are talking about. Frankly, there are people out there who could tell horror stories about most any of us. The purpose of GreaseSpot first and foremost is a place to tell YOUR story. In doing so, do we need to dig up everyone else's garbage? This is up for discussion. Where do you think the boundaries should be?

    Main Site.

All of the current moderators have opted to be anonymous, that is, we use one handle when posting, and a different one when moderating. This allows us to separate our duties as moderators from our posting. Generally, a moderator has "mod" prefixed to the rest of the handle, like this one: MODdishwasher. Moderators have the ability to edit other peoples' posts. As pawtucket stated, we are volunteers. Each of us is a long-standing GS posters who has donated part of his/her time to helping keep GS up and running.
  10. Well, Vickles, if you are ever the subject of one of these threads, I'll know not to edit it then.
  11. Jim, Yes at GS personal issues can be discussed anonymously. As soon as names are known, the responsibility shifts. Do you use your last name here? I do not know. If you do, and if your wife used her name too and came here to post "potentially embarrassing, sexual issues of a personal nature" would you want that thread on the Open Forum? If BOTH of the people want to discuss their sex lives here at GS, fine. But I want to hear from BOTH. Then they can say whatever they want and whoever wants to at GS can give their advice and opinions. But if ONE of them wants any privacy, the moderators will try to make sure they have it. Their names are known. Their situation is known. If they BOTH want it discussed openly here, use the Contact Us feature, or a PM to let me know.
  12. I wasn't trying to hide anything. I pulled the thread, and explained why in a new thread. It takes time to go through a thread and weed out offending posts, let alone sentences or words. I was using a meat cleaver and not a scalpel because I didn't have time to go through each post and I wanted to get the thread back up so yall could keep it going, without drawing too much attention to anybodies personal situation. It's always a judgement call and in my judgement, too many personal details were being dragged in. We can agree to disagree.
  13. Valuable learning? The only thing missing from the thread now is the gossip.
  14. And we do. I disagree. This thread violated the privacy of another poster.
  15. Several posts have been deleted that refer to a specific situation involving GS posters. If your post contained other information that did not pertain to this situation, or if an innocent post was accidently axed, we apologize. Please do not use the GS public forums to air your private matters. For those who are not directly involved, pease do not use the GS public forums to discuss the private lives of GSers. Thanks you

    where did it go?

The thread has temporaily been moved to an undisclosed location. We are cleaning up some posts that contain personal information. The thread will return shortly
  17. I have removed all personal references. LDO USN and coolchef1248, please take this to Private Message.

    Naming Names.

When to use the moderator alert (that little yellow triangle with a !): When privacy is being violated. When something is being revealed about you or another person that has not been revealed on these forums by the person being talked about, i.e. any identifying information, including names, locations, workplaces, and any other dirt or old baggage. When threats are being made. Definition of threat: "1. a declaration of an intention to inflict punishment, injury, etc., as in retaliation for, or conditionally upon, some action or course. 2. an indication or warning of probable trouble." When you or someone else is being harassed. Definition: "to disturb persistently; torment; pester; persecute." At GreaseSpot, the operative word is persistently. When you see vulgar and abusive language, unless you enjoy that type of thing. In which case, join into any of our colorful discussion in the Tacks forum. If it offends you, kindly alert GreaseSpot Cafe and we will assist you by altering your profile so you can no longer access that forum. What you don't read won't disturb you. However, the personal attacks there are not acceptable in any other forum. There are filters here for pornography and profanity, but if something slips through, let us know. When not to alert the moderator: When the person you hate the most at GreaseSpot posts on 'your' thread. When someone posts an opinion that is different from your own. When you don't like the thread you are reading, but you don't have the self-control to turn off your computer. More thoughts: The moderators are a cyber police force. We have night sticks, riot gear, and ammunition. Our job is to control the riff raff. If you call on us, help us out by giving as much information in the alert as you can. Maybe you've been following the thread, but the moderator has not. Moderators are GS posters, and only have so much time, just like you. So when you send one of us to a six page thread, and the offense is on page 5 1/2, give us a summary. What is the nature of the dispute? Did an infraction really take place? By and to whom? Maybe by writing it out yourself you can judge whether this is something that really needs attention.

We've been wondering the same thing. Any ideas?
  20. def59, I sent you a PM as a test and didn't have any trouble getting through. Let me know if you get it. Your PM feature should be functioning.

A reminder to all: The In Memoriam forum is a place to say goodbye. That is all. Any discussions about the deceased belong in the Open Forum. We would rather have many threads regarding a death rather than start a discussion in the memorial section. The same goes for the Prayer Forum. Both of these are quiet forums. They aren't designed for debates and discussions, but for quiet and reflection. Thank you.
