  1. As far as I see it.. the ball is now in the fundamentalist's court. I haven't seen a reply yet.. maybe they have, I just haven't found it. I'd like to see a reasonable reply framed.. maybe find something else in the human genome.. assassinating the character, or the motives of one whom one is debating to soften the relevance of some proposed facts.. I mean, that's Congress. not a debate..
  2. I think the most interesting part of this presentation- well, given he is convinced that there is scientific evidence that supports the idea of evolution- is that it fundamentally does not effect his spirituality. He still practices Roman Catholicism. Still believes in a creator, God.. on the other hand- the "opposition" with bible literacy and inerrancy, and so on would consider their very existence to be threatened if what he says is true. At least that's my impression of the situation.
  3. A few personal thoughts about this- I don't take this presentation like what he's saying is "see, see, you're WRONG, you dumb intelligent creationists.." I think the intelligent design camp views this as a chess game, and suddenly they have been issued a check, which very well might be checkmate.. maybe the assertion is that the "intelligent design" people don't exactly have all of the facts straight.. maybe things got intelligently designed slightly a different way than they think.
  4. I didn't choose the name of the video. Ignoring the title-which could have been stamped on it by somebody else- who knows. And ignoring the religious or lack of religious inclinations or faulty methods, assuming there are some, of the speaker- what about the DNA? So we find two less pairs of chromosomes in man. They can be shown to be a fused set from a simian neighbor- and they show "end pieces" in between the two ends where they have been fused together. Has anyone found a good, solid counter-argument to the claim that this is proof that man evolved from the simians by sharing a mutated version of the DNA? And the argument he puts forward seems to rely on being able to find the exact site on the chromosome where the fusion occurred. Are there any thoughts, disclaimers or valid counter-arguments to this?
  5. but what about the fused chromosome? I mean.. to have two chromosomes fused together that are separated in the other species.. and end markers showing up in the middle. You can argue about this character's particular bias and such.. but what about the chromosomes?
  6. :) from the comments.. even atheists like this character.. I'm not an atheist. I just don't think I'm intelligent enough to define Deity. Through texts and contrived means..
  7. Is this relevant to the discussion.. I think so. I think it is on topic. You are the best math instructor I have ever had.. I have a couple of well considered replies here.. 1. I'm sorry. There are a lot better I've known. I started as a graduate teaching assistant, and we all that did so were just, plain awful. I'm glad I've gotten a little better. 2. maybe it is because I've only been doing this for three years, and I'm not burned out yet..
  8. More thoughts. Sometimes, one is given a gift. That is, insight and understanding without any personal effort. Its a gift. One of my lack of given a gift.. in a mathematical sense was 7 x 8. even into recent years.. there was a hole in my head the answer would not fit. I'd have to compute it.. knew 7 x 8 was the same as 7 x 4 x 2. I could do that.. So in one sense, I'm Brilliant. In another sense, I'm a moron.
  9. consider this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-actualization The danger (in my opinion) of realizing one's full potential is ripe with the possibility of receiving worship.. which must be refused. just a thought..
  10. Praise and worship can be addictive to the recipient. Not to mention, it can have a corrosive effect.. or cause corruption in the object of one's praise.. Not cause.. maybe that's not exactly right.. that would be blaming the to be victim bestowing such praise..
  11. I know about all of the thank you cards filled with lavish praise and gifts to Martinfale. I just wondered it the same kind of praise and financial renumeration were sent to the vicmeister back in the day.
  12. I wonder how that works for him now..
  13. I was never a class instructor. I was aware of the first eleven points, but who paid for, and sent the card? And was there any cash gift included?
  14. Eventually, we will meet as equals..
  15. How "big" is da way. There might be a few ways to answer this question.. Very, very small. In fact, in a desperate need of Viagra, Cialis. or the current drug of choice. I hear some offer herbal alternatives. Small.. enough to drown in a bathtub, thanks to reducing it by over fifty percent within twenty years. By those "in charge". I'll think of a third way to answer this question eventually..
  16. They went nutzo with this. Not only buying tapes, but high speed tape duplicators. The one corpse guy I knew who bought one also bought a closet or two of cheap sixty minute cassette tapes, bulk, without cases. They were not good enough quality to record music on.. When the hoopla settled down, he was trying to figure out how to sell a couple closets full of useless, cheap sixty minute cassettes..
  17. Too much oil with an unknown source for me.. I prefer *something* baked.
  18. Hands rarely fit into gloves. Unless one has an expensive tailor.
  19. Sometimes I think the Secrets of the Universe lie buried, in the bottom of a landfill somewhere.. Hey.. even rotten hard drives. I've harvested the magnets they use in the voice coil r/w arm.. they are incredibly strong. Rare earth magnets.
  20. God Bless you friend. I think I am trying to do the same thing..
  21. I think that model appealed to us when we were immature minds. Now the difference seems to be welcomed. Weird.. In a strange way.. sowy. I'm looking for something different.. maybe it could be a path out of this madness..
  22. Ever think.. at birth, one is predestined to be conformed to the image of his son.. then *we* have to sort through all kinds of strange, unbecoming, and evil s*it.
  23. I like the idea of recycling "old stuff". I picked up and old usb 2.0 external CD writer from the Salvation Army resale store: Two Bucks. The CD was broken, no good. Ah.. but I had a 200 GB hard drive I harvested out of an old computer the local computer shop tossed out. So out goes the rotten IDE CD.. in goes the hard drive. No special power supplies needed.. a standard computer power cord powers the now external hard drive unit.. its only half full.. videos, movies, music.. old and new windows drivers for every bit of hardware I come across.. old papers.. tons of pdf files from scans.. its like a flash drive on steroids. The read and write time is about five times faster (or more) than that of a usb flash drive. And it plugs into any usb port, and is readable on any computer..
