  5. Rhino, Dow told me in January that I was retiring in June. But, there's a good separation package and a partial pension, so we're not hurting. I just don't feel like really retiring yet. A few more years in industry, and then maybe "retiring" to teach at a junior college or small university. If you took color film to a fast-film developer, they probably used Photo Chelate in their process, and I've worked on that. Also a number of food items (mostly soft drinks and sauces) contain calcium disodium EDTA (or calcium disudium edetate), another compound I worked on. I did not invent these compounds, I just improved Dow's processes to make them. George
  6. "Electricity use is the main source of mercury emissions in the U.S. CFLs use less electricity than incandescent lights, meaning CFLs reduce the amount of mercury into the environment. As shown in the table below, a 13-watt, 8,000-rated-hour-life CFL (60-watt equivalent; a common light bulb type) will save 376 kWh over its lifetime, thus avoiding 4.5 mg of mercury. If the bulb goes to a landfill, overall emissions savings would drop a little, to 4.2 mg. EPA recommends that CFLs are recycled where possible, to maximize mercury savings." Actually, electricity USE is not a source of mercury emissions at all. (What? When I turn on a switch, mercury magically appears?) Coal-fired electricity GENERATION may well be the major source of mercury emissions, due to traces of mercury in the coal. (In other countries, mercury is still used in gold mining, so that's a MAJOR local mercury emission source.) The answer, of course, is either better mercury recovery (and many technologies are now in place), or go to non-coal power sources (nuclear, wind, solar -- natural gas works, too; but that's better as a chemical raw material). 7. We're definitely staying in the Houston area to be near the kids and grandkids. Had my retirement party this evening. It was a fun time, with co-workers, local friends, family, and friends from Houston (and essentially no bosses). George

  11. Since no one picked up on Raf's clue, I'll continue, "Marry Freddy!? What an infantile idea, what a heartless, wicked, brainless thing to do. She'll regret it. She'll regret it! It's doomed before they even take the vow." "Why can't a woman be more like a man?" "You're magnificent. Five minutes ago, you were a millstone around my neck, and now you're a tower of strength, a consort battleship. I like you this way." "She's so deliciously low. So horribly dirty." "It's the new small talk. You do it so awfully well." George
  12. WW? Steve!? Anyone? Hint: it was one of those weird third-season OS episodes. George

    Busy day

Today promises to be a busy one for me. I retire from Dow after 26.5 years, so I've got to finish cleaning out my lab, my office, my computer, etc. Although I don't have a new job lined up yet (though Celanese seems likely), we know we'll be leaving the Freeport area, so we close on the sale of our house today. The contract stipulates that we don't have to leave until at least Aug. 1. I'm performing in a jazz concert tonight. Busy, busy, busy... George
  14. Truly a "classic" show. Let's see if anyone else can get it. George
  15. You got it. waysider. If you don't want to post one, make it a free one! George
  16. Indeed. PERI Gilpin (who was smoking hot on "Frazier," IMHO) MAZE N Hit it, NIS! George
  17. WordWolf was the other person I thought might get it. Yes, it's not "Super Friends," which starred Earthlings Wendy and Marvin. I was really looking for "The All-New Super Friends Hour," but all the follow-up versions, including "Challenge of the Super Friends," featured the Exxorian siblings Zan and Jayna (and their Monkey, Gleek). We wait with bated breath, O lupine one! George
  18. I'll be amazed if anyone else gets it accurately. George
  19. I hope someone gets this on the first quote. (Actually, I'm sure hiway would, if he's looking.) "Wonder Twin powers: ACTIVATE!" George
