  1. Have a wonderful day... It's always nice to chat with you! HAPPY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!color>size>face> Hope R. color>size>face> "Don't let the past remind us of what we are not now" - Stephen Stills
  2. I haven't read the whole thread - but has anyone mentioned Motown? I was watching TV and saw Stevie Wonder doing a Target commercial and remembered how much I love his music. "Songs in the Key of Life" came out my interim year and it kept me going for much of it! He was so amazing - still is. I've always wanted to see him in concert but always seemed to miss him when he came around. I don't think he's toured in years. And then there are the Four Tops, The Drifters, Smokey Robinson, Diana Ross and the Supremes, Aretha... I know most of Motown's early material was written from the Brill Building in NYC by Gerry Goffin and Carole King as well as Leiber and Stoller. The Brill Building is another fogotten topic here in the music history thread. (history of the Brill Building). It's amazing how much music was written there in the 60's. Some of the greatest songs I remember from my childhood came from there. I don't think there's anyplace like that in the world anymore. 4. P.S. When Mozart was very ill, only days before death, he told Constanze that he believed he had been poisoned with a slow Italian poison and that Salieri had been the one who poisoned him. In letters to his father, his sister and a friend, he said he believed that Salieri had been against him since he arrived in Vienna. In 1829, in an interview with his younger son, he told the interviewer that his father was the originator of that accusation, though the did not believe it himself. After he died, a collegue of the physicians who treated Mozart wrote letters describing Mozart's death in order to refute the rumors that Mozart had been poisoned by Salieri. Though Shaffer's play and Forman's film contain an awful lot of speculation, it is all based on fact. So even though "Amadeus" is an exaggerated biography of Mozart - especially the personalities of the characters, there is a lot of factual information woven into the script. 5. Keynote, Thank you for your kind words. I recently bought the complete set of Mozart Symphonies on 12 CD's. The two conductors are Sir Neville Marriner, who also conducted the orchestra for "Amadeus", and Josef Krips, who many people think is THEEEE most accurate Mozart conductor. I always have preferred The Academy of St. Martins in the Fields versions of Mozart than any other orchestra I have heard. I have 4 bios on Mozart and I agree; while "Amadeus" is a wonderful movie (my favorite), Mozart was not as one dimensional as he was portrayed in the film. Tom Hulce was brilliant and, IMO, deserved the Academy Award as much as F. Murray Abraham did. I recently bought the extended DVD edition. The on-screen commentary by Milos Forman and Peter Shaffer is wonderful. I already had the VHS version, but this was well worth buying twice! I am slowly trying to collect his complete works. There are a few out there, but they are very expensive. I'm shooting for the complete piano concertos next time around. Heck, I've still got a lot of symphonies to listen to. But I keep playing my favorites, the "Jupiter" (41), the "Linz" (36) and Symphony 39 in E flat major.... ahhhhhh. And, believe it or not, I will never, ever get sick of "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik". When my kids were babies and couldn't sleep, I would play the andante for them and they'd be out in 5 minutes. I can also listen to the overtures to "The Magic Flute" or "Le nozzi di Figaro" over and over again. There is no opera here in Tampa - and I'd be hard-pressed to find someone to go with me if there was one. Like I said, Mozart is one of the first people I want to meet when and if I get to heaven! I want to give him a big hug and thank him for his music. Hope R. color>size>face> "Don't let the past remind us of what we are not now" - Stephen Stills
  6. Oh... and Mozart's music is the closest thing to what I believe God would write... If there is a heaven, and I end up there, he's one of the first people I want to meet. Hope R. color>size>face> "Don't let the past remind us of what we are not now" - Stephen Stills
  7. I'm still stuck in the 60's (and early 70's). I'd rather listen to James Taylor, Jackson Browne or Paul Simon than anything I've heard on my daughters' radios. Guess I'm an old fogy. When I pick up my guitar, I usually start off playing something by James Taylor or Paul Simon. Great acoustic guitar players (along with Jorma Kaukonen) and wonderful tune-smiths. I used to kid around and say that those 2 taught me how to play guitar, because all I did (pre-TWI) was listen to their records over and over again and try to do what they were doing. No such think as downloading tab back then. I will always love the Beatles. John was my favorite. I used to think I was the only person in TWI who wept bitterly when he was killed almost 22 years ago. I always try to remember to light a candle every December 8th. Our NPR station here usually does a great tribute, too. Paul is wonderful - I realized just recently that he is truly a happy guy. It's natural - real. Not an act. You don't write a songs "When I'm 64" or "Ob-la-da Ob-la-da" if your a pessimest. Kaisersushiverbalsoze84 did me a great favor a little over a year ago and turned me on to the folk circuit world via Christine Lavin. She's been around since the mid 80's, great voice, great acoustic guitar, great lyrics. She's what I would have wanted to be had TWI not come along. She's wonderful, funny, bright, talented... There's a whole world of folk music out there that has been mostly ignored by record companies. The Indigo Girls were the closest to being a little famous, but not for long. There's also Julie Gold, Nancy Griffith, The Roche Sisters, Four Bitchin' Babes and the late great Dave Van Ronk. Lots more I haven't had time to explore. Here are the lyrics from Christine's latest album titled "I Was In Love with a Difficult Man". The song is called "Wind Chimes"... Wind Chimes by Christine Lavin This island is so beautiful this must be paradise the hotel is lovely, the staff is super nice my room has a terrace that overlooks the sea the sun is bouncing on the water - lucky, lucky me I close my eyes for a minute in the distance I hear the whispering of wind chimes so far and yet so near the sound perfumes the air, the ocean sighs below a perfect moment here on earth I don?t want to let it go wind chimes floating on the breeze wind chimes wafting through the trees wind chimes the sound of angels cloud dancing wind chimes there is nothing as entrancing I'm swimming in the ocean, I'm lying on the beach I'm reading a good thick book, I'm eating a peach I'm walking on the shoreline, I'm picking up pink shells the whole time somewhere out there is that the sound of tiny bells? No, it's wind chimes floating on the breeze wind chimes wafting through the trees wind chimes the sound of angels . . . ballet dancing wind chimes there is nothing as enchanting I eat my dinner on the terrace, watch the burning sun extinguished by the ocean, evening has begun I turn down the blankets, climb into my feather bed but something?s keeping me awake, is it deep thoughts in my head? No, it?s . . . wind chimes floating on the breeze wind chimes wafting through the trees wind chimes the sound of angels . . . polka dancing wind chimes once I thought were so entrancing I close all the windows but that tinkling sound comes through I put a pillow over my head I put in earplugs, too I open up the minibar - drink tiny vodka, tiny gin but nothing helps I?m trapped here with the incessant din of wind chimes clanging on the breeze wind chimes annoying all the trees wind chimes a sound I once thought life enhancing wind chimes angels Irish stepdancing Too much of a good thing is too much, simply that. At times like this I'm glad I travel with a baseball bat Now I'm knocking down the wind chimes within a square mile of this place Now I'm going back to bed with a smile on my face Crickets cricking in the night crickets cricking with all their might crickets a dull yet monstrous roar crickets a sound that makes me long for Wind chimes floating on the breeze wind chimes killing all the trees wind chimes the sound of angels . . . belly dancing wind chimes there is nothing more entrancing than wind chimes (the sound of the wind chimes gets louder and louder at each chorus... the crickets, well... you'll have to hear it ) Hope R. color>size>face> "Don't let the past remind us of what we are not now" - Stephen Stills
  8. Mr. P-Mosh... Your insight is wonderful. I got into TWI when I was 16, but it was my choice, not because my parents were involved. I have always appreciated posts by you "kids" who were way-born and bred. I wonder how many 2nd generation Wayfers still stand with TWI, especially the ones in their late teens and 20's who are out from under their parents' roofs? I'd bet money that it's less than half of those who were born into it. Thanks again for sharing your story. I wish you all the best in life! 9. [spoken:] There's an old Australian stockman, lying, dying, and he gets himself up on one elbow, and he turns to his mates, who are gathered 'round him and he says: Watch me wallabys feed mate. Watch me wallabys feed. They're a dangerous breed mate. So watch me wallabys feed. Altogether now! [CHORUS] Tie me kangaroo down sport, tie me kangaroo down. Tie me kangaroo down sport, tie me kangaroo down. Keep me cockatoo cool, Curl, keep me cockatoo cool. Don't go acting the fool, Curl, just keep me cockatoo cool. Altogether now! Take me koala back, Jack, take me koala back. He lives somewhere out on the track, Mac, so take me koala back. Altogether now! Mind me platypus duck, Bill, mind me platypus duck. 12. Linda Z... BNL are a LOT more fun than many of the bands that are around today. My 15 year old considers them to be an "old" band, though! LOL - I think any band that's more than a year old is now considered passé by a teenager. As I said earlier - we just went to see Springsteen. I haven't seen anyone connect with an audience as well as he does for years and years. We had really close seats, but they were BEHIND the stage! The concert was sold out, so every seat behind the stage was taken on 3 levels. I never felt like I missed out because Bruce, as well as the rest of the band, made sure that we had at least one of them facing us throughout the night. Bruce also turns around a lot to jam with Max, so I probably got to see as much of his face as the people out front! He's in his 50's and still slides around the stage and jumps up on the piano and does all the things he did when he was in his 20's & 30's. I really appreciate performers who go the extra mile to not only play the music, but to let you know that they're there for you. I haven't seen anyone like him for a long time. 14. bowtwi... I LOVE PUBLIX!!! Didja get the two for $5.00 pumpkin pies? They look great. I bought a can of Readi-whip because they had it in the same case as the pies. I got everything from Publix... the turkey, the ham, the side dishes. We're having another ex-TWI family over tomorrow. This is the first time we've been home in a few years. We usually go to my mom's in S. Fla. BTW - I don't think I'm doing the Christmas party this year. I will let you know if I change my mind. If I do, it'll be smaller than last year's. Happy Thanksgiving to All!! Hope R. color>size>face> "Don't let the past remind us of what we are not now" - Stephen Stills
  15. Ahhhh - Thanks Ted - that's better! As far as Sammy P. goes - I haven't seen or heard from him since the late 80's, after PoP. I occasionally hear from his ex-wife who was one of my best friend in HS. Next time I hear from her I will ask her about him. Hopper - I would NEVER replace my old Martin! It's a part of me! However, I did buy a new Taylor last summer and am enjoying it very much. It's body is much smaller than the Martin and has a very rich sound for such a small guitar. I keep it out on a stand in my bedroom so when I get the whim, I can just pick it up and play it. (which was great advice from the guys at my local Sam Ash!) I most fun I have playing now a days is when my 15 year old and I "jam" together. It really lights up my heart. 16. Well, John beat me to the punch and told you we took our 15 year old to see Springsteen the other night. He played for 2 1/2 hours! The E Street Band is as good as ever. Steve Van Zandt made a comment about staying late because we'd already missed "The Sopranos". My daughter enjoyed the concert for the most part. Very few people her age attended. Her observances of the audience were interesting ("Mom, there is not ONE black person here!" I replied, "Yes there is, he's on stage, playing the sax.") I'm glad I decided to get the extra ticket for her. When she's older, and finally realizes how good he is, she can say she saw The Boss when she was a kid. I WANT music to influence my kids. I have friends who don't play music in their homes. The only time they listen to it is on the radio in their mini-vans! No wonder their kids like Brittney Spears and N'Sync. My kids know the difference between Mozart and Bach when they hear it. My oldest knows how to play "Blackbird" and Led Zepplin's "Over the Hills and Far Away" (and now wants a 12-string!). We have thousands of downloads from Napster and the like. There's always music playing in our house, or one of us is playing music. I have told my Way Prod story before and will not go into the whole mess again. I will say that being a part of Way Prod did more to hurt my self-esteem and bruise my ego than anything I ever participated in while I was in TWI. The good news is that I'm not in TWI anymore! But I still have no desire to play for anyone other than myself or my family sometimes. One of the best things I've done since leaving TWI was to buy a new guitar. It's a really lovely instrument. My only regret is that I didn't think I deserved one of the better models at the time I bought it and stuck with the mid-range priced one. Woulda, shoulda, coulda... Anyway that's my 5¢... Hope R. color>size>face> "Don't let the past remind us of what we are not now" - Stephen Stills P.S. Ted - ya know I love ya - but could you please separate your paragraphs when you post. It's easier to read them in smaller pieces than in one big lump! Thankee!
  17. PAW!!!! I hope you're where you're supposed to be!!! I hope you're not too cold! I hope you had a good birthday party! I hope you get back here soon! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! Hope R. color>size>face> "Don't let the past remind us of what we are not now" - Stephen Stills

  20. He called me yesterday (11/19). He was in the midwest heading towards New England. Bad weather slowed him down a bit so he could not make all the stops he wanted to make. Those of you who have posts in the queue or are waiting for registration approval... hang in there. I'm sure he'll get to a computer as soon as he is able. 21. I also read that James Cromwell is being considered. He was the actor who played Farmer Hoggett in "Babe" and the warden in "The Green Mile". Christopher Lee doesn't have that mischievous look in his eye like Richard Harris did. I think Cromwell would be the perfect replacement. Lee is 80 years old and I don't think he will be able to be in 5 more HP films. Cromwell is only 64 - I hope they give him a chance. 22. Yeah - After I'd already seen it, I read in the newpaper that there is a surprise when the NINE minutes of credits are over and done. Oh well, guess I'll just HAVE to go see it again... I hope my youngin' doesn't mind! It was much darker than the "Sorcerer's Stone" - which makes me wonder what's going to happen as the films progress. Who do you think will take Richard Harris' place as Dumbledore? Perhaps one of the "Lord of the Rings" wizards can step in! Hope R. color>size>face> "Don't let the past remind us of what we are not now" - Stephen Stills
  23. I pulled my 12 year old out of the last 2 periods of school today and took her to see the latest HP movie. It was GREAT! Very true to the book - even the dialog is word-for-word in most places. Of course, even at 161 minutes, there were some scenes left out that I would have LOVED to have seen done (Nearly-Headless Nick's deathday party isn't in there ) Warning: If you have children younger than 7 or 8 years old, I would not recommend it. There are two very frightening scenes that could cause nightmares, and a bunch of less frightening incidents that even made me jump a few times. The actor who plays Lucius Malfoy is just mahvelous. And Kenneth Branagh as Gilderoy Lockhart was PERFECT casting. Whaddya think Zix? Hope R. color>size>face> "Don't let the past remind us of what we are not now" - Stephen Stills

  25. The Marciano's left TWI shortly before we did. The last time I spoke to him, he mentioned that he would like to move his family to S. Florida. Don't know if he and Pauline & the twins ever did. They decided to break contact with ANYONE they knew from TWI, friend or foe. Got a nasty email from him that sounded much like Chris Geer's "have no further contact" letter. Oh well... (shakes head while rolling eyes). Hope R. color>size>face> "Don't let the past remind us of what we are not now" - Stephen Stills
