You can still report crime without giving your information, even with caller ID. The police understand that some people won't call to report a crime unless they are guaranteed no one will find out who made the call. Lots of police stations have a special number to call if you want to report a crime anonymously. If your police station is online, you can look up how to place an anonymous call. If its not, I'd call the non-emergency number, and ask them if it was possible to report a crime anonymously, and how to do it, before the need came up.

Unless you have been to her neighborhood and know her situation precisely, you are not in any more of a position to give her specifics on what she should do than me. The gangs in Arizona are not the same as the ones in Georgia for the most part. Having lived in both places (although I was in Atlanta rather than Athens), I have seen that many things are different. I think that anyone who has not been to her neighborhood is incapable of offering specific, actionable advice. Making decisions for Dot without much information is just as valid as Bill Frist's "medical diagnosis" of Terri Schiavo.

Also, I believe Dot is probably about my mother's age, and I would not tell my mom to stand up to gangs. If something bad were to happen I would feel guilty for my part in suggesting actions that led to disaster.

NO ONE, young man, was making decisions for Dot.

You presume too much. :nono5:

AND you speak out of turn when suggesting YOU know better than others.

By all means, you are the expert on you. Otherwise, a word to the wise.

All you need to tell the 911 operator is that you do not want or need contact from the officers answering the call. You don't want them coming by your house. That will be passed on to the officers heading to the call and they will go to where you said the trouble was at, but won't stop and check on you. I've done that many times in the past when we had to call for help but didn't want our neighbors knowing it was me that called.

While looking for a new apartment to live in, I was amazed at how many managers were aware of that building I was then living in and the bad reputation it had. I assured them it was all true and I was so happy to be getting out of there. It's nice to not have gang members or at least wannabes hanging out on the street below my window as I tried to sleep. (We were on 2nd floor.) It's nice to not have little kids running wild and screaming 24 hours a day and their parents no where to be found. I can look out my window here and not see drug deals going down on the street corner. I haven't heard a gunshot fired since I moved away from there either! Everyone in the complex I live in now are very friendly and we all look out for each other.

The police actually told us to make sure a report was made for each incident, I asked them again our name and address would be on that -- they said they need it for probable cause. But I think I can call if I see a kid painting a sign, but then the police come out and can't search without probable cause, and they need ME (the eyewitness) to do that....

I guess I can call from the grocery store if I can drive out -- they still have pay phones.

Once, I was in California, I hear a woman screaming for help and looked out the peep hole and couldn't SEE anything but heard voices. I called the police and told them I wanted to remain nameless. I kept my lights off so not to draw attention to me. She was screaming he has a hammer! I thought, do I go out there and both of us get hit? I did not have a gun then or I would have gone out. I looked around for a weapon. What to use? A high heel?

By the time the police came the woman was gone (she fled - not died) and the guy was sitting outside near my apartment. Now, the police, I guess knew where "the call" was made. They knocked on my door and pushed the guys face into my area and said, "You are the one that called? Is this the guy?" I said, "Yes, I did not see him but continued to HEAR him."

The guy was screaming he was not going back to jail...

I called to complain to the police that “this officer” BROUGHT THE CRIMINAL to MY DOOR! The guy was screaming he was not GOING BACK to jail -- I asked why he went to jail before --

It was assault and battery. I said the only difference between THAT and murder would be the tolerance of the person being beaten.

The guy DID beat a woman with a hammer that night and had thrown the hammer through a glass window in another apartment.

I was furious that they brought him to my DOOR. Each day, I came home and opened my door looking for my little peke dog. I figured if she did not come then the guy was IN there.

I hated living like that. I had to move.

Dot,

This may sound personal, but what city do you live in? If this offends you, don't answer it. I'm just trying to find out what city does not take action on these punk juvenile criminals.

If you read Dot's posts... it's IN one of them...

Uh, Rocky. She said she wasn't comfortable posting that information. If you noticed that she slipped and posted it previously, the classy thing to do would have been to NOT bring it up.

And no, I'm not trying to insult you, just an observation.

Rick

NO... NOT "just an observation." A very subjective judgement. A most inappropriate judgement at that. The reason, you ask?

Because there's far more ways of looking at it than just yours.

The fact is there is a plethora of publications available to give you specific guidance on HOW to effectively organize neighborhood groups for political action. And what you have described is a need for organized political action on the neighborhood level.

Perhaps one good place to start would be your local library.

Find a book entitled "Rules for Radicals" by Saul Alinsky. Read it. Do it. It WILL work. Time would fail me to expound on how I know.

The following is from a sidebar to an article I just read on MSNBC (linked from the Drudge Report) at:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17388372/

Alinksi's Rules for Radicals

"Personalize it"

Saul Alinsky's rules of power tactics, excerpted from his 1971 book

"Rules for Radicals: A Practical Primer for Realistic Radicals"

1. Power is not only what you have but what the enemy thinks you have.

2. Never go outside the experience of your people.

3. Whenever possible go outside the experience of the enemy.

4. Make the enemy live up to their own book of rules.

5. Ridicule is man's most potent weapon.

6. A good tactic is one that your people enjoy.

7. A tactic that drags on too long becomes a drag.

8. Keep the pressure on.

9. The threat is usually more terrifying than the thing itself.

10. Maintain a constant pressure upon the opposition.

11. If you push a negative hard and deep enough it will break through into its counterside.

12. The price of a successful attack is a constructive alternative.

13. Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it.

No, if I said "I think Rocky is a pompous foot who is so full of himself that it boggles the mind that he can fit his head through the door", now THAT would be a subjective judgement.

Fact remains that we can not edit our posts after a set number of hours. Dot made a post saying she wasn't comfortable posting certain information. Knowing that, it wasn't real considerate to bring attention to the fact that information she wasn't comfortable posting was already posted elsewhere. That is my point. Want to make a big deal out of it? Fine, won't bother me a bit. You are as insignificant to me and my life as a person could possibly be so no skin off my foot.

Or you COULD just say, hey, maybe that wasn't the right thing to do and be done with it.

I enjoyed reading your thing from Saul Alinsky.

It explains why you post the way you do and why you'd draw attention to Dot the way you did.

You leave normal folks at a disadvantage when you attempt to hold them to their own rules since you make your rules up as you go along and, obviously, have no honor.

It's quite telling that you'd be an admirer of Saul Alinsky, the left-wing granddaddy of contemporary American socialism, and Hillary Clinton's Chicago internship under him.

What did Dot do to deserve your exposing her? Is it that you, with your obscene leftist views, are so vastly superior to the rest of us that the privacy and wishes of normal people are expendable to your grandiose vision of "the greater good"?

Well Ron, there you go again! :eusa_clap:

Hillary interned with Alinski? did you even read the article?

I appreciate your kindness Ron. Really I do.

My "obscene leftist views"? wow. And as much as I appreciate that you respect my views as "so vastly superior" to (well, I know you don't speak for anyone but yourself), your flattery will STILL get you no where.

Tell me, where "is it written" that I am responsible for what someone else said?

It really looks like you could use a good nap. :P

OH NO! Not THAT! ;)

HOWEVER, given the cry of outrage (from not only one poster), I see the error of my ways.

Well... now I know what some of the folks who make public gaffes (misspeak) might feel (not that the situation is comparable, but McCain got jumped on by the media pretty good the other day).

OKAY!

Even though it was right there for anyone to read, it was a mistake for me to point out that Dot had already posted the answer to a question someone asked, even though in response to the question, she declined to subsequently provide the information. She clearly has a right to decline to answer any question posed here, especially when it becomes personal.

I made a mistake. I apologize.

Anything else?

Oh, and not that it matters for anything practical, but Ron, you all knowing sage you...

I first learned of Alinski and his book from a republican activist when we were working together on a common, non-partisan cause related to education issues.... about 16-18 years ago. I learned a great deal from her, and now she is a member of one of the city councils here in the Valley of the Sun.

Though Alinski was indeed a "lefty" his tactics work regardless of political leaning. And I believe you were incorrect on Hillary having worked/interned with Alinski. She interviewed him and wrote her senior thesis on the book.

Nothing to report. Rocky didn't break any rules, which is what the report button is for. (It get's WAY overused in my opinion.)

Rick

That's what I figured also... however, because of the obvious chorus of voices, yours, but not JUST yours, Rick... I see the error I made and have no problem apologizing.

Guys

I posted this is Athens Georgia showing you what a town here is like, that is not where I live. Thanks for the concern.

I have several reasons not to post my exact address, or town.

One of which is an ex-husband who threatened to kill me and followed me around for years. My Dad called me in the corps or when I was WOW or something and told me to never come home at Christmas or around the ROA time as the ex-husband would park up the street and watch the house. This happened for years.

Excathedra and others had to hide me out for a while. Although, I still had his last name I could not use that name and did some other things to "hide".

Once, he came to the ROA looking for me, drinking beer and carrying a gun. God had me dissappear as I never ran into him.

Rottie

I do not recall your name being Rottie Grrrl, that's funny

I thought it was Rottie Girl I never noticed.

To all, I appreciate your watching out for me. I REALLY do. Thanks. It was sweet and I feel as though my big brothers are out there some where making sure I do not get hurt. Thank you

But maybe now that it is not an issue we can move past it, I don't want to fight. I am tired.

Thanks for all of your ideas and advice. Even if they differ, I needed to hear all of it. Even the Doc Holiday things, as my deep inside person does want to be Doc Holiday.... Ya know?
