I was looking for a thread just like this one tonight. While the roast and cassaroles are in the oven, I've taken a moment to come upstairs to post to the Greasespot and say hi.

A Merry Christmas everyone. I'm blessed to have all my kids still living at home. Both parents still alive AND in good health. Life is good and believe me I know it and am thankful. It's truely a special time of year. We've been snowed and iced in the last couple of days so I'm including a pic of our house I took just as it was getting light this morning... I'm an early riser icon_smile.gif:)-->

The song you hear playing is the Austrian Christmas carol Still, Still, Still. Again.. Merry Christmas to each of you!

I first heard "Still, Still, Still" in German class, many years ago, and still remember some of the words (from the chorus);

"Still, still, still,

weils Kindlein schlafen will!

Maria tut es niedersingen,

ihre keusche Brust darbringen,

still, still, still,

weils Kindlein schlafen will."

I don't remember all of the word's meaning now (from the German), but that is a great tune. Thank you!

The english translation of the traditional Austrian Christmas lullaby:

(3 VERSES)

Still, still, still

One can hear the falling snow.

For all is hushed,

The world is sleeping,

Holy Star its vigil keeping.

Still, still, still,

One can hear the falling snow.

Sleep, sleep, sleep,

'Tis the eve of our Saviour's birth.

The night is peaceful all around you,

Close your eyes,

Let sleep surround you.

Sleep, sleep, sleep

'Tis the eve of our Saviour's birth.

Dream, dream, dream,

Of the joyous day to come.

While guardian angels without number

Watch you as you sweetly slumber.

Dream, dream, dream,

Of the joyous day to come.

The German version has 5 verses, and its translation is different. (I will be back when I find the translation from German- some of the words do not seem to mesh with my translation program, or my limited German either)

Still, still, still, weil's Kindlein schlafen will!

Maria tut es niedersingen,

ihre ganze Lieb' darbringen.

Still, still, still, weil's Kindlein schlafen will.

Schlaf, schlaf, schlaf, mein liebes Kindlein, schlaf!

Die Engel tun sch?usizieren,

vor dem Kindlein jubilieren.

Schlaf, schlaf, schlaf, mein liebes Kindlein, schlaf!

Gro? gro? gro? die Lieb ist ?gro?

Gott hat den Himmelsthron verlassen

und mu?reisen auf der Stra?n.

Gro? gro? gro? die Lieb ist ?gro?

Auf, auf, auf, ihr Adamskinder, auf!

Fallet Jesu all zu F?,

ok, I give up, there are more versions of words to this beautiful melody than I knew could exist. the melody itself was originally Austrian (1819?)

ANYWAY,- Merry Christmas to All and peace be upon you and your families.

Beautiful house and beautiful song...thanks, Sudo.

I only have a minute. My son, our two dogs, and my cat are patiently waiting to open their gifts and have breakfast.

I'm thankful to have my son living nearby for the first time in 14 years...I was especially thankful last night when I saw all the traffic backed up trying to get into the airport as over the river and past the woods we went to grandmother's (and grandfather's) house.

I'm thankful that after calling about 20 snow removal companies yesterday, none of whom answered their phones or couldn't come out if they did, that a good samaritan in a pickup truck with a plow came along and dug out our two cars that had been buried in glacial boulders by the city snow plows. After the guy left, my son looked at me and grinned and said, "A Christmas miracle, Mom."

Much to be thankful for this Christmas.

May you all have a blessed and joyous and safe, warm Christmas. You all (even the ones I argue politics with icon_biggrin.gif:D-->) mean a lot to me, and my life is richer because of you!
