And now for a word from our Congress:

From MLB.com:

Roger Clemens, the seven-time Cy Young Award winner and current active leader with 353 victories, has been called to testify on Jan. 16 in front of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, along with the personal trainer, Brian McNamee, who told federal investigators and former Sen. George Mitchell that he injected Clemens with performance-enhancing substances numerous times from 1998 to 2001.

Andy Pettitte and Chuck Knoblauch, other players who McNamee named in the Mitchell Report last month, were also called to testify, as well as Kirk Radomski, the former Mets clubhouse employee, who supplied McNamee with the drugs. Radomski said in the report that he supplied at least 51 players with drugs over a 10-year period.

..and another thing....why do you keep calling me Nick??

......Im having trouble seeing your pictures, but I have some ideas who you may have ....I'll get to see it in a few days when i get home........

Perhaps the best pitcher of all time. No longevity though. Sadly. The only reason I wished (as a kid) to live in Los Angeles so that I could see him.

I was looking at Koufax's record a few months ago ( i dont have it in front of me right now) and I have to wonder how long he would have lasted if he was in todays market where players are treated with a little more care. In 65 and 66 when he was known to have an arthritic elbow he pitched well over 300 innings in both seasons and pitched several times on two days rest. He was incredible but I have to wonder how much longer he would have been around if the Dodgers werent so shortsighted about his career............

I am curious, have the stRangers evereven made the playoffs?, I had assumed that they had, they always seem to be pretty good, well--most years anyway-- but thinking back on it Im not really that sure, Yikes --does this stretch back into the Senators days? that cant be right can it?

Its time----Im gonna root for the stRangers ------- enough is enough

.................................................

It ought to be interesting to have both Mcnamee and Rog testifying to Congress--

anyone taking bets who gets charged with perjury

The Rangers made the playoffs at least a couple of times in the late 90's, only to run up against a Yankee team that could do no wrong for a few years.

The Dodgers have a history of burning out pitchers, and Koufax came before Tommy Lasorda, who was merciless on pitchers.

It was probably wise of Koufax to retire before his arm was shot. I don't think anyone would have wanted to see a watered down Koufax getting shelled. Better to leave in a blaze of glory.

I just saw Koufax 'face to face'( well, sort of-he was on the Dodger float at the Rose Parade and I got within a few feet of him) Darned if doesn't still look like he could pitch a few innings.

I just read where Mcnamee doesn't want to appear before congress. His lawyer says he's tired of the publicity and wants to 'move on' with his life.

I'm not reading that as an indicator of truth or anything, but it struck me as 'funny'.

Hey, I know I set fire to your house, but please don't ask me to talk about it. I'd rather move on, if that's alright.

Who calls you 'Nick'?

From Toms sig line:

Hey look, mister - we serve hard drinks in here for men who want to get drunk fast, and we don't need any characters around to give the joint "atmosphere".

is from Nick the bartender--

One of the next lines in that movie , if not the very next line is what I wrote-I figured Tom might get it

shhh... I'm gonna use that movie in the "name that flick" thread if I ever get another one right...

That's funny hiway, I could've sworn that at the same time that I saw the news about the congressional subpeona there was a blurb about McNamee saying that if Clemens didn't quit calling him a liar he was going to sue him "settle it in court"... oh well, looks like we're gonna get to hear RC say "I was told it was B-12"... wonder if he'll wag his finger like Raffy.

starman, stRangers made the postseason in 95,98 & 99. Faced the evil empire all three times. Won the first game of the series in 95 then lost 9 straight to them.

:biglaugh: It always cracked me up hearing Mr Viagra saying he had never used performance Enhancing Drugs... :biglaugh: --yea Ok Raf...........

Rog has already changed his story from Mcnamee never injecting him with drugs (on that video) to a few weeks later injecting him with lidocaine and B12.

Isnt lidocaine a drug Rog??

Mcnamee has a masters degree in sports medicine, he knows the difference between testosterone and B12.

I dont know how far Roger's, Oh my God! those were steroids??? defense will fly

mstar, what do you think about everything going on with clemens now ?

did you see the interview, do you see he's filed suit (i think that's how you say it) ?

i'm sorry if this has been covered already

no need to apologize... those questions are most appropriate. :eusa_clap:

I'm not mstar, but I did see the interview and that he has now filed suit against the trainer guy.

It will be interesting to see how it all plays out for Monsuier Clemens.

Goddammit, this is the start of page 163...I'm sure this means the Cubs won't win the World Series this year...

simonzeebro: I always thought it was:

"I took my troubles down to Madam Rue

You know that gypsy with the gold tattoo"

but it turns out it's a combination of both of your lyrics...

"I took my troubles down to Madame Rue

You know that Gypsy with the gold capped tooth"

...glad to help out any way I can, it seems that we need Madame Rue to help us figure out the McNamee/Clemens fiasco... I wonder if she'll be in the congressional chambers that day? ...maybe ESPN can bring her on as a cosultant!

Good for the Goose !

A truly awesome 'closer' who seemed to usually come in with the bases loaded and no outs-often in the 7th, and then pitch the rest of the game.

My personal favorite memory is the '78 playoff game between the Yanks-Sox, where he pitched the last 2+innings. That was some game.

Yea congratulations to the Goose.

Relievers are becoming an accepted part of the hall which is a good thing....Thats about 5 now. Good for Mr. Fu Manchu

My memories of that game are a little foggy but he did pitch the last 2 or 3, He did get hit pretty good (about 5 or 6 hits and 2 runs) and Lou Pinella made two miraculous plays in the "sun field"; in right to save runs ( the last a deep liner by Jim Rice to right center directly in the sun in the ninth with one out and runners on.

After Gossage got Yastrzemski to pop to Nettles(?) at third for the final out I sat motionless in stunned silence

(That moment could be in a 'deafening silence ' thread...) along with the rest of Fenway for a good 20 minutes before I could reorient myself enough to stand up and walk out.

That sukked.... but i have to admit Goosage did do his job well with alittle help from Sweet Lou

Guidry (if i remember correctly) who had a phenomenal year got the win and Gossage the long save....

To me it is sort of curious that Jim Rice missed by just an inch in his vote for the hall just as he did in the ninth on that October afternoon off of Gossage.

:biglaugh:

All these years later --I wonder what things (if any) would be different if that one hit had gone a few inches further

Baseball is full of what if's.

The Yankees were just about to close out the Sox in '94 when a ball was fair within inches, then the train derailed.

That '78 game was amazing from every angle. Of course my feelings were the opposite of Mstar's. He's had his revenge since then.

The Goose was in trouble with every batter, yet kept his composure, which is the difference between a 'winner' and 'loser'. The play by Piniella where he lost the ball in the sun, but 'faked' that he had it, holding the runner, was classic.

In 'the Bronx Zoo'-the Sparky Lyle book-he describes the series against the Dodgers as anti-climactic, saying that the Red Sox had the Dodgers beat as a team in every way. I'd agree with him that year.

well i was musing on the Rice drive in the ninth earlier and you have to wonder "what if" it did sail over Lou's head in that brilliant sun that day and the Red Sox had scored in the ninth then went on to beat the Dodgers......no one may have ever heard of the "Curse Of The Bambino" for one thing which wasnt launched until the late 80's,

I know of at least a few people who moved during 86, uprooting families, lives and careers to watch the Red Sox win it all in 86 which of course never happened but they did move ---changing somewhat of their destinies alomg the way, How many lives did that effect?

Would those who own the team now, have been so interested, if the Red Sox were just another franchise? Would there be a Fenway Park if there were different owners? Would there be a "Red Sox Nation" or even aneed for one today?

Would Jim Rice have been elected instead of Goassage the other day?

Who knows?...these winter days get long to wonder on things ....time perpetually changes on a dime -- which baseball illustrates for us over and over hundreds of times each year ..all it is is one fly ball, in one half inning of one game that is over 29 years past.

what an amazing game is baseball

Those questions can be asked for alot of teams-teams who also feel they're not 'just another franchise'.

I have to say that if someone uproots their family and career for a baseball game, then baseball has become an unhealthy and damaging hobby. I also don't think it means the Sox are more 'special' because some people are screwed up.

I also think Jim Rice belongs in the Hall, whatever 'need' there was for a 'nation' is moot at this point, and that it's good that Fenway is still around.
