Baseball (the talkin' sport)

Looks like the Phillies are off to an early lead... 3-0 middle of the fifth...

Danks looked pretty good last night... we follow him here because he was part of 'the future' at one time... they called it "DVD" (Danks, Volquez, Diamond)... Danks is pitching in the bigs for the WS (we got McCarthy who can't seem to get healthy), Volquez is tearing up the NL with the Redlegs (we got Roy Hobbs, no complaints but we kinda need pitching) and Diamond still hasn't busted through...

But we have a lot of highly talented young arms in the system with great potential... we can only hope that 1) we don't trade them away and 2) El Presidente can change the culture/luck around here when it comes to grooming pitching talent...

I wish I were sitting in the front row at Wrigley...I'd like to grab at some of those fouls.......

I have to ask you as an ump and Simon who probably sees him alot--That weird glove twirly thing that Dempsters doing--does he always do that Simon?

Is it a legal move Mr Ump?

Ive never seen anything like that before...

Well I guess I have missed it...can you ( or Simon) give a more complete description of the act? Otherwise, I haven't found anything in the rules about being weird; though at the kids level, we do frown on deliberate distractions.

Watch Dempsters glove when he pitches from the windup--Where most guys will keep the hand in the glove and the glove will raise straight up (or whatever) during the windup he puts the hand in the glove as he goes into the windup then twists the glove left right left right left as he lifts it about chest high before he stops the glove gyrations then delivers the pitch.

maybe its nothing rules wise--but its a very strange quirk-- I have never seen anything like it before.

That 10 pm start time is brutal. I remember staying up late on school nights to watch Yankee-Angels games. It seemed almost surreal then. Now it just seems exhausting.

Yea all these weird playoff start times PLUS the fact that Im way more up in the pins and needles category for these games makes for an exhausting October---but--Im not complainin' the late games are a pain but its worth it..

EDIT: Slam Loney 4-2 Dodgers

7 walks from Dempster in 4 2/3rds??

He might want to work on his command just a little....

All I could find about Dempster was that he said "it helped him with his rhythm"...

There's someone in the AL that does a weird glove thing as well... he said he does it to keep from tipping his pitches...

Here's a video I found... it's not Dempster but a kid acting like him... is it close?

Yeah, that's what he does, Tom...Except that kid appeared to have more control and command of his pitches than Dempster did tonight...

Yea Jon Lester doesnt have his good command tonight either. Hes tough ---but if he's not throwing first pitch strikes he may not go deep into the game.

Lowrie at short looks like he has some rookie jitters to me tonight--he normally looks as surehanded as anyone in the league, he didnt look like himself on that error that lead to a run

Based on the first games, we may be seeing Manny back at Fenway.

The thing I dislike most about playoff coverage is the obsessive focus on fans of losing teams. It's only game one, but already, the camera was finding the most depressed Cub fans at Wrigley, and sullen Angels fans in Anaheim.

It will only get worse as the series progress.

Unless, of course, teams win on their home field.

But I really tire of close ups of fans ringing hands, staring at nothing.

I'm ringing my hands over the financial crisis and upcoming election. If my baseball team loses, I'll feel bad for a little while then move on and wait til next year.

I still have to feel for the Cubs fans about now--They still are in a good position and I actually think their chances are pretty good--but there is no way Id want to relive being a pre 2004 red sox fan, where the team fills you with hopes all season and then pulls them away at the last minute--but worse yet its the mental replaying of every past failure and the expection of loss again that makes it a nailbiting and high anxiety time ---It is a very empty and frustrating feeling.

Emotions are heightened for fans during October baseball, the highs are higher and the lows are lower--Its difficult, and not for everybody, but its part of what makes it very exciting....and very disappointing...

There's a long long way to go yet....one down but no one knows what tomorrow brings--Ive been on both sides--the hopeful side is much better and that still can be nervewracking

If they would do away with anything I wish it would be those ^%$# FrankTV ads and the Viagra commercials that are on every half inning! Im already sick of Frank Caliendo and Ive only been through one day.

EDIT:

Im watching Mike and Mike on ESPN they have Obama on--

If the White Sox and Cubs get to the series I'll have to suspend the last week of the campaign, to let the american people know that I have my priorities in order --Barack Obama

Well, I'm sure the switchboards are lighting up in the crisis hotlines in Wrigleyville...." Sir, don't do anything drastic...It's only one game....You wouldn't want your grandkids to grow up being Sox fans, now would you?"....I hope that old adage rings true: " 'tis better to have loved and lost, than to never have loved at all"....

I can feel---especially for the Cubs fans--After having 2 in the last few years Im not nearly as nervous as I once was going into the playoffs--and I know Hiway has told us that he has experienced a championship (was it eight times in your life?).

Its a much different scenario if you never have experienced it than if you have-- if only for the hunger to taste what it feels like just once.

I think everyone should get to experince at least one--it is exhilirating to hang with a team for years and years and watch them fight and finally put all the pieces together..

I do think that people can be very passionate and emotionally connected to a team without being morons about it. In some sense it can be like a love relationship, where you get a sense of fulfillment out of seeing your 'loved ones' succeed.

Good game in St. Pete right now....I have to call this series for the Rays, who seem to be the team of destiny so far this year, but Im hoping its the White Sox if only so if the Red Sox advance they wont have to face them

4-3 Tampa in the 5th

Yes, I've enjoyed 8 championships in my conscious lifetime. The most rewarding being '77 , and '96, coming off periods of ineptness. So, I have no complaints.

Of course it's never 'enough', and you want more.

I do enjoy seeing teams that have never won, or won for a long time, make it. Here in LA, there are college grads with families who have never seen the Dodgers win. Texas hasn't hosted a Series in any city. There are several others.

Hang in there Simon! Breathe deep! Keep the Faith! Im running out of cliches!

(o yea) Anything can happen! Its not over til its over!

The cubs gotta play loose and be Ok with a split, if they split in LA , then who knows about Game 5? (Well aside from the coronaries happening all over Chicago)

Ok end of cliches although I think it is essentially all true ...and....

The Rays just won their first post season game ever---

Well, it won't be long before the Cubs hand over the Dodgers their lunch money...What is it about Manny, anyway?...I know he's a great hitter with a great career and all, but if he could have just played the Cubs in the playoffs every day in his career he'd have about two thousand homers...Don't Cub hitters know that the Dodger infielders already have old coaches to hit them infield practice?...Lou just signed a contract extension...I'm wondering if he's thinking of tearing it up about know...

I did get to experience it one time... sort of... I was in LA on business and the LAD were in the series, I decided to go to a local bar to watch the game to "feel the atmosphere"... it was the game where Gibson hit that home run and limped around the bases...

it was electric... it was something I want to feel here...

(picked a pretty good game to see at the bar with the locals didn't I?)
