Well, that kinda stinks.

I'm not impressed with Microsoft's versions of things. If you want to use their firewall and antivirus, they sure beat having none at all. However, I prefer to use other ones on the market- free ones, at that. A 7 year old laptop is slowing down? Yeah, my tip is to replace the laptop. It's at the end of its useful phase of the cycle. Buy a new laptop, and put Linux on the old one, and the smaller operating system will free up resources, thus speeding the machine up. (Windows is bloated.) That will help until the machine drops dead completely. If you use the laptop for web surfing, emails and an office suite, there's Linux versions for all of those. If you install Ubuntu as the O/S and load the Linux versions of your programs, you will probably not miss Windows after a few months, and will appreciate how much faster the machine runs, and how it has fewer crashes and things. Windows is for those of us who use idiosyncratic programs you can't get in Linux, or people who insist computer= Windows. In the meantime, I'd try to empty a big chunk of the data stored on the laptop. If you can clear about 200 GB of space, Windows tends to run a lot better. If you have less than 100 GB of empty space, Windows tends to slow to a crawl, or freeze up. Transfer your data to an external hard drive. Then you still have the data, and your laptop runs faster.
