  1. It was a David Bowie album/movie from the 1970's.
  2. The Danbury Baptist Association of Danbury, Connecticut sent a letter, dated October 7, 1801, to the newly elected President Thomas Jefferson, expressing concern over the lack in their state constitution of explicit protection of religious liberty, and against a government establishment of religion. In their letter to the President, the Danbury Baptists affirmed that "Our Sentiments are uniformly on the side of Religious Liberty — That Religion is at all times and places a matter between God and individuals — That no man ought to suffer in name, person, or effects on account of his religious Opinions - That the legitimate Power of civil government extends no further than to punish the man who works ill to his neighbor..."[5] As a religious minority in Connecticut, the Danbury Baptists were concerned that a religious majority might "reproach their chief Magistrate... because he will not, dare not assume the prerogatives of Jehovah and make Laws to govern the Kingdom of Christ," thus establishing a state religion at the cost of the liberties of religious minorities. [edit] Wall of separation Thomas Jefferson's response, dated January 1, 1802, concurs with the Danbury Baptists' views on religious liberty, and the accompanying separation of civil government from concerns of religious doctrine and practice. Jefferson writes: "...I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should 'make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,' thus building a wall of separation between Church & State." 3. soul searcher The Way was very big on teaching "predestination". You will find a good deal about it in Ephesians, which is in (surprise, surprise)-----the epistles. "Thus Saith Paul."
  4. I'm not a lawyer. Don't know much about the legal aspects of all this. One thing that does separate John Lynn from Chris Geer , Vince Finnegan, etc. is that John Lynn has come here, pitched his products and used his own name. So, I guess I'm saying that if the guy is willing to openly use his own name, himself, it should, therefore, be ok for us to use it openly in a post. And the converse would apply, as well. Just my opinion.
  5. Hmmmm----I guess I never gave much thought as to why they were called the "groovy" Christians of Rye.
  6. If they heard it in The Way, I'm not surprised. EVERYTHING was supposed to have some "secret" meaning.
  7. Dave's not here. (He tripped out, Man.)
  8. If you wish to retain the "tree" analogy, perhaps it would be best described as a pollard.

  10. I disagree with your conclusion. This is what penworks said: ---- inerrancy is a premise that disallows genuine research to be done. Why? Because a person who thinks the scriptures must be perfect will only look at evidence to back up their claim. She did not say that "all research has to be based on provable premises". If one were to begin their research with the notion that all scripture is inerrant and that it must all fit together perfectly, one would really be looking for confirmation of what they already believed to be true. That's not "research", that's rationalization, coupled with cognitive dissonance.
  11. Seems to me that we looked up the weather data for that particular time and place on another thread. If I remember correctly, not only did it not snow that day, it never snowed that entire month.
  12. I used to believe The Tooth Fairy left money under my pillow.

  14. I'll never know whether it helped convince anyone I "witnessed to" to sign The Green Card. I do think, though, that it helped ME to convince MYSELF that I was following someone with legitimate credentials.
  15. Thanks, erkjohn, but I seriously doubt it had anything to do with me. In the corporate world of The Way, I never rose above the position of "mail-boy". A later teaching I heard explained that God could put spirit "on" you if the need existed, just like He did in the OT. ----That still doesn't fully explain the contradiction.

    what is sex?

According to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, it's one of the most basic of all human needs.
  17. Well said, Roy. At the AC in 1973, during one of our afternoon twig meetings, I questioned the contradictory nature of this very topic. You know what I was told? "If you would speak in tongues more on a daily basis, stay in fellowship and operate the other two utterance manifestations with greater frequency, God could talk to you and answer that question."
  18. Also Notice the contradiction in "the great principle"? If you are severely "out of fellowship", God can then talk to your mind by virtue of dreams. Seems like you would have a better chance of hearing from God if you were out of fellowship. At least that way, He could bypass your spirit and talk directly to your mind. EXCEPT, "God, being spirit, can only speak to that which He is---spirit."
  19. "God, being spirit, can only speak to that which He is----spirit." "God's spirit speaks to your spirit which speaks to your mind." -----VPW (The Great Principle) Or, as VPW stated elsewhere: God cannot speak to you directly (via your spirit, not your mind) unless: 1. You are "born-again" 2. Speak in tongues MUCH on a daily basis. EXCEPTION: God may speak to you in a dream or vision if you are so far out of fellowship that you can't receive revelation.
  20. Nonsense! The Grateful Dead were still in Jr. High in the first century.
