  1. stRangers pitchers and catchers reported YESTERDAY! (maybe they're trying to get a head start)

...of course, maybe they just show up so early because they miss Rocky and Simon!

that logjam in the Angels outfield could be lightened by GMJ getting popped for roids... no, I haven't heard anything but ya know...

Maybe they're hoping to see the President when he comes to town on Wednesday...

  2. now that I'm a Manny convert, I'll want to read that book.

I heard Jim Bouton speak at the Baseball Reliquary, here in Pasadena a few years ago. He talked about his many 'comebacks', still pitching for Independent leagues well into his 40's. He said he knew it was time to hang it up because he was serving up too many home run pitches to guys named Justin, and Jason.

I just read that the Angels signed Abreu...

  3. well... I'm a little less kind than you guys, I ain't holdin' my breath that Alex learns anything out of this...

as to how I'm passing my time getting ready for opening day?

    1) watched "Pride and Perserverance" on MLBTV... the story of the Negro Leagues and their players. Guys, this is a must see! It'll do your heart good and fill in a lot of blanks for you.

    2) watching Ken Burns' "Baseball" (I'm only near the end of "the fourth inning" but man oh man... how it makes me salivate!)

A couple of "old" books I recommend for your enjoyment if you haven't read them: Number 1 the Billy Martin autobiography by BM and Peter Golenback and The Mick about Mickey. It's been years since I read them but they're both great... of course, I'll always suggest Why Time Begins on Opening Day by Thomas Boswell...

    Anyway... they report soon!

I have Dish Network and have told them I need to have them pick up the MLB channel...

The pitchers and catchers for some teams report on Saturday (THIS WEEK!). :)

I remember reading Sandy Koufax's autobiography when I was a kid... maybe high school...

I also remember reading Ball Four my senior year in HS. Can you imagine what Bouton would have to write about if he had been playing during the last 15-20 years?

  4. Rocky, do mean he posted something here at GSC?

If anyone has an address or phone number, if you would be so kind, contact me via the PM service or email.

    Thanks, Jim.

No... I don't know if he posted anything here or not. If he did, he didn't identify himself.

I meant at another web site.

  5. Just wondering, anyone know or heard anything about Mike & Nancy Blatnik?

Some of us sort of heard from Mike about a year and a half ago... but he didn't have much to say at all...

and it looks to have been a one time contact.

  6. random thoughts-

So Arod tested positive in 2003. My only question is why do we not know until 2009 ? I have no sympathy for him-I do find it interesting that scores of lesser names continue to breathe sighs of relief while the big guns go down.

The stRangers now have Andruw Jones, and good luck to them. I have never seen any player, at any level, perform worse than Jones did last year. Hey-maybe he's healthy and ready to roll. I certainly wasn't walking in his shoes, and don't know why he lost all of his skills.

    -

The Torre book is good, though it's really the Tom Verducci book. Some interesting stuff I'll get to sometime. A lot of my passion for Yankee baseball-especially the Sox rivalry-died that ugly day in 2003 with the playoff brawl, and has never really returned. Reading this book brought it all back. Sometimes I wish I lived in Kansas City, rooting for the Royals, and knowing there are good seats available most of the time.

Very few games at the BOB (aka Chase Field) would find a walk up fan unable to buy very good seats.

Andruw Jones... I know what you mean hiway... but the stRangers aren't really taking any big chances here... a spring training invite is all... and if last year turns out to be a wake up moment for him then good, if it turns out that he's lost it... oh well... we're hearing more about el presidente talking about how things are different with the pitchers now and in the future...

here's something for you all to ponder:

Pitcher: Kevin Brown, First Base: Raffy Palmeiro, Second: Villardi (?), Third: Caminetti, LF: Ruben Sierra, CF: Gary Matthews Jr, RF: Juan Gonzalez, Catcher: Ivan Rodriguez, SS: Alex Rodriguez, DH: Jose Canseco

Quite the lineup isn't it? What made me think of it?

were we the freakin' epicenter of it all? ...or is it just that more of our guys got caught? ...does this take anything away from the "genius" of Rudi Jarramillo? ...I always wondered how he got people to be great hitters after 5 minutes in the bowels of the stadium...

...and I can go watch a game just about any time I think about it! ...but I'd trade that for a pennant! ...and there are three minor league teams in the area! (I like them best)

For once I agree with that big mouth former WS co-MVP with the Dbacks... Curt Schilling, who called for making known ALL of the names of those who've gotten caught using performance enhancing drugs...

  7. Thank you all for your kindness. I can't share al my observations because of sensory overload and lack of sleep. :)

I just wanted to give a public thank you to Rocky, who's been a chat buddy at all hours when I could get my computer to work.

btw, no thanks is necessary. I stay up way too late and am on line usually. It was a joy to share some of my recollections from when my daughter was born. I'm sure we all have the utmost confidence that Raf will be an amazing dad!

  8. What great pictures.

It all brings back so many wonderful memories as though they happened yesterday.

    Ain't THAT the truth!

    WOW! WOW! WOW!

    Congratulations!

Carl Sandburg: "A baby is God's opinion that the world should go on."

    What a blessing!

    I'm kinda choked up here.

    WG

Amen! (to each of your points WG)

  9. Congratulations Raf and Mrs. Raf (more to the latter, since she did the really hard work :) )

Leonardo is gorgeous. And that second photo is spectacular. Tell your wife that few women look that beautiful so soon after giving birth!

Few women, that is, except on TV and in the movies... :)

Linda's right... that second pic is something that would make an incredible painted portrait.

  10. I just learned John Updike died. Maybe I should post this in the In Memoriam thread, I know he was a great writer of novels and essays but I will always remember him best for his famous essay, "Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu", It is his first-hand account of Ted Williams' last game as a Red Sox one of the first real baseball essays i read and one that sticks with me still

    FULL ESSAY IS HERE

I still get a chill down my spine and a tear in my eye when I read his account of the last at-bat...

    Good Stuff

    Very cool. Thanks Mstar!

  11. do yourselves a favor and set "Inside the Moments" on your DVR... also watch or record "Epic Moments"

    ...IF you get MLBTV

    both are very good

we're closer to opening day than we were yesterday...

Well, I FINALLY got an HD DVR (free from Dish Network... for two more years' committment)... but Dish doesn't yet carry the MLB channel.

  12. Wow thats amazing--

Ive been playing with the picture for about 10 minutes-Im not a photo or tech geek but the detail is mindboggling

does anyone know anyone who was there?--It looks like you could find and I identify just about anyone who was there

Yeah... I know people who were there... I'll see if they can find themselves...

  13. Gary's email is on there and I wrote him a letter, a respectful letter, and asked him for LCM's telephone number. And I did, do the right thing, gave him my address and phone number, after all, I do sincerely want to ask LCM if he sexually assaulted women at TWI HQ.

The part that gave me a chuckle was the button over the top of the photo, that says "buy this photo"...ok, ah..

The only email address I saw on the page with the article is for the reporter who wrote the story.

And newspaper websites typically want people to consider buying photos.

  14. Payne Stewarts plane was on auto pilot and went down in S Dakota when it used up all it's fuel. The NTSB concluded lack of cabin pressure as the cause, but no one knows exactly why since all the evidence was destroyed when the plane crashed, they pretty much went straight in at a high rate of speed.

The fighter jet pilot's that were deployed when Air Traffic Control (ATC) discovered there was no response, noted the windows were all glazed over from the inside, which suggests a rapid decompression occurred at altitude, the ATC reported the Lear cruised up to about FL 450, or about 45,000 ft at one point, and if the rapid decompression occured at that altitude or above FL 300, all onboard would be passed out within seconds.

The Lear 35 series jet the crew was flying had known problems with their O2 system and had departed without filling the canisters. This flight became famous because of the relatively small numbers of runaway plane flights and because Payne was a well known golfer. A birdstrike would be an unlikely cause, but it could be possible.

Rocky, I have been to Stellar Airpark, great place, there's a guy there that has a P-51 (WWII fighter plane aka P-51 Mustang) there, awesome plane, very distinct sound to it's piston radial engine, similar to what you might hear on a WWII war movie. Music to the ears of aviators..btw :) .

Also Stellar has a flight training center there, which may be part of the reason you heard low level a/c noise due to student's mistakes, and from the pic, if the school was due north of the runway, it would be in the flight path on approach to land or take off, which may account for low level flying by some. There are notices to all airman that fly in or out of that airport to be aware of overflight of residential areas and noise, so those should have been observed. Noise is a big problem due to urban sprawl and the fact that when alot of these airparks, airports, and runways were built, there were few houses there at the time. Too bad not everyone likes that sound .. :love3:

No, noise wasn't/isn't the problem. There are property tax issues that would bore people for me to go into here (and it's not pertinent to this discussion)... otherwise, it was an interesting addition to the neighborhood.

My daughter (now 19) went to school, from Kindergarten through 5th grade at the school with the playground that pilots sometimes buzzed... yes, they have a flight school and several other businesses on the East side of the runway... and homeowners, some of whom have hangers attached to their homes, on the West side.

And my understanding of the Payne Stewart incident is that when the cabin depressurized, the oxygen supply system didn't kick in... and everyone was dead within minutes (asphixiation) while the autopilot flew until it ran out of fuel.

  15. LOL!!!! Some people gladly pay hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars to live next to airports. :)

I used to live less than a mile from one of those airports (Stellar Airpark, Chandler, AZ)... but noise isn't as much of a problem there... I used to live only a couple of blocks to the west (to the right of the area pictured) from here... click this link to read the captions where the pic is actually posted.

well... it didn't like my pic URL so it wouldn't post... but you can see it if you click the link above...

And Linda... that's why I mentioned about having something to block the noise...

this pic was taken directly above a school... which arrogant pilots often buzzed... but that's a different issue altogether.

  16. Huh, so we have trucker expressions filtered through footballers'/jocks' comprehension and turned out as a spiritual statement? And used to terrify believers?

Sirguessalot: hadn't heard that later qualifier, must have come along some time after I was already a grease spot (M&A'd).

WW: before my time. If he stated this on a 1980 SNT, he probably practiced on the Corps before that. Any offers, anyone?

The 9th corps was in residence before 1980 and I believe I had heard it from Loy's mouth before 1980... but can't be sure.
