  1. It would still be the journalistically responsible thing to do.

Not necessarily. If the journalism is limited to "book review" they could easily handle it by just including a disclaimer such as "this is a controversial issue, opposing views may exist."

  2. What a wonderful Baseball Sunday at Chavez Ravine. Of course, I'm happy the Blue Crew won, but it would have been great regardless of the score. Best moment was Nomar spearing a line drive at first for the final out, right after he'd been put there as a defensive replacement.

I'm already feeling the end of the season blues. I may only get to one more game . The playoffs are maddeningly long, yet over much too soon-then we descend into darkness for 6 months.

And thankfully Vin will be back for at least one more year. He has had amazingly good health, and hasn't lost a beat. Here's to another year.

Yeah, you got a good game to be at... maddening/saddening for me however.

Do you get the feeling that Vin perhaps wouldn't know what to do with himself if he didn't have ball games to call? I only mean that figuratively, as I'm sure he could find all sorts of things to do... but if baseball season was on and he wasn't there, perhaps he'd feel as lost as other Los Angelenos' baseball fans.

  3. Well! That should be interesting for WayGB.

In the spirit of fairness, I wonder if Fox will have anyone from TWI to present an alternative point of view/offer comment? Ric0 M@gnelli, for instance, as PR consultant? :biglaugh: Now that would be worth YouTubing.

If Fox was presenting a NEWS item about TWI, they probably would (I don't know enough about them to know with any degree of certainty). But since it's a BOOK promo, no such need for alternative view is necessary.

Anyone with a DVR can set it up to record it... which, since it will be on at 5:40 am, MST, I must do in order to catch it.

  4. The Dodgers are indeed in first place. 2 games over .500 but it's still first place.

Lost in Manny mania is the emergence of Andre Ethier, who's hitting a ton. When asked about the sudden hot bat he said"2 words, Manny Ramirez".

I'm starting to think my tongue in cheek promotion of Manny for mvp, isn't a joke.

The Dbacks have never looked so bad. I have to wonder about one play though. Manny hit a fly to right, that should have been an easy out. The fielder lost it in the sun and it dropped 2 feet next to him and bounced in the stands , scoring 2 runs. It was ruled an ground rule double, instead of an error. That seemed mighty generous to me, since it clearly should have been caught. I guess if his glove had touched the ball it would have been different, but I don't get it.

I'll be in my favorite seat in the loge today for the potential sweep. I was looking forward to Randy Johnson pitching, but he's been scratched with a sore shoulder.

This is true, not necessarily in a literal sense, because they've had some pretty lousy times... but for this year, they looked REALLY bad.

  5. Pardon me while I grumble (and complain)...

Dbacks at the Dodgers tonight, on ESPN in HD.

However, that game is NOT available on ESPN in MY area.

Hence, I'm left to endure it on Fox Sports Net, LOW definition. And FSNs LOW definition SUCKS.

  6. I went and found it--

    RULING

    Nope--No change

    No no-no for C.C.

That's possibly because official scorers generally give the pitcher -- from a fielding perspective -- the benefit of the doubt that it would be very difficult to make plays like that because of how they come off the mound on follow through after releasing the ball. If Greg Maddux was the standard, they'd have given CC the error, BUT... just like you can't assume a double play (and therefore errors are not generally given when the pivot man, be it the SS or 2nd baseman, bobbles instead of making a clean relay throw), you can't assume all pitchers field as well as Maddux.

Btw, Dbacks had another bottom of the 9th comeback win against the Cardinals today. It was VERY exciting. I'm glad I recorded the game... :)

Stephen (I hit for the cycle on Monday) Drew led off the bottom of the inning with a triple (on a magnificient at bat, going from 0-2 to 3-2 and fouling off several more pitches). Eckstein made an out, Conor Jackson singled scoring Drew with the tying run. Next batter -- Big Adam Dunn doubled scoring Jackson from first with only one out.

Big series this weekend with Hiway's Trolley Dodgers... starting Friday.

  7. For those of you who don't know, I work for our County Assessor. He had an opponent this year who is an extremely disgruntled sociopathic ex employee. The voting ends tonight at 7:00 p.m. We are the same time as the Pacific Coast right now.

The opponent used to make up stupid songs for people's birthdays. He actually made snide remarks about people in our office in them. I decided I am going to sing a song for him on his voicemail after he finds out he's not elected. I decided it will be to the tune of "Breaking Up is Hard To Do." That part of the song was "Becoming Assessor wasn't for you."

Anyone who wants to chime in with some lines would be greatly appreciated. He made comments on his radio ad like he would abolish nepotism and get rid of corrosive ethics. He's really extreme in his allegations. I would like to reflect that in my song.

I have to cook dinner now, but I will be thinking about this for the next hour. I appreciate it if you feel the urge to add something.

    Thanks.

Nice idea for your personal mental health... but very much a BAD idea for you to put it on his voice mail at ANY time. VERY BAD idea... WILL cause far more headaches for you and your boss... and could (almost certainly, eventually, if not sooner WOULD) get YOU fired even though your boss is probably going to win...

I STRONGLY advise you to NOT publish or record YOUR voice ANYWHERE at any time with ANY kind of follow up to this. You WILL regret doing so, if you follow through on your idea.

  8. I'll defer to you on that hiway, sounds like he's been on fire and sparked the team as well... but I don't think they'll give it to him for only a partial year...

CC has been killer for the Brewers.. even though he's not an everyday player he has sparked that team... but he probably won't get either the MVP or the CY...

And although Edinson Volquez has been great in Cincy... it's more than likely going to go to Rocky and Simon's boy doncha think? Not many this year have been as strong and consistent as Webb has...

If he regroups and regains his composure to win another couple, it will be a lock.

  9. Then that makes two cycles today... Beltre (so far) has gone 5 for 5 and hit for the cycle here as well... unfortunately he plays for SEA and it's now 12-6 them... :(

Technically, Beltre's was the second of the day... therefore, semantically, your sentence might more correctly read "Then THIS makes two cycles today... Beltre (so far) has gone 5 for 5 and hit for the cycle here as well..."

Okay, you can slap me now.

  10. Game not finished yet, but Dbacks have come back from a 5-1 deficit to now lead 8-6 going into the top of the 9th against Pujols and the Cardinales...

Dbacks' SS Stephen Drew has gone 5 for 5, hit for the cycle with an extra double thrown in for good measure.

  11. I have some idea of what TWI believes about Jesus. It is not quite Arian, nor is it quite Ebionite, and also not Nestorian. Sort of a combination of the three, in some form or another. That is beside the point.

But I have a different question, and I personally find cosmology to be fun to talk about. What does TWI believe about the spirit world? What is it like? I'm talking about things like angels and their hierarchies (such as the nine orders of the holy angels: Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones, Dominions, Virtues, Powers, Principalities, Archangels, and Angels etc), demons (devil-spirits?), the spirits of the departed, saints, heaven and hell, where people go when they die, the final resurrection, and other things.

How does their cosmology tie into their beliefs, especially the Law of Believing, which I'm told is the cornerstone of TWI doctrine?

    ~Phil

    Hey Phil,

I don't understand your use of the word "cosmology." Even metaphysical cosmology is not necessarily about the spirit world.

    from: Wikipedia article on Cosmology

Between the domains of religion and science, stands the philosophical perspective of metaphysical cosmology. This ancient field of study seeks to draw intuitive conclusions about the nature of the universe, man, god and/or their relationships based on the extension of some set of presumed facts borrowed from spiritual experience and/or observation.

But metaphysical cosmology has also been observed as the placing of man in the universe in relationship to all other entities. This is demonstrated by the observation made by Marcus Aurelius of a man's place in that relationship: " “He who does not know what the world is does not know where he is, and he who does not know for what purpose the world exists, does not know who he is, nor what the world is.” This is the purpose of the ancient metaphysical cosmology. However, Stoicism rejected Aristotle's theory of universals as being "in the things themselves," calling them "figments of the mind." Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy adopting the concept of universals as being "concepts," and therefore of the mind, and therefore controllable by free will. Thus, we get the analysis of Aurelius' that the nature of the universe is not from "intuition," but from a free-will, conceptual understanding of the nature of the universe.

Cosmology is often an important aspect of the creation myths of religions that seek to explain the existence and nature of reality. In some cases, views about the creation (cosmogony) and destruction (eschatology) of the universe play a central role in shaping a framework of religious cosmology for understanding humanity's role in the universe.

A more contemporary distinction between religion and philosophy, esoteric cosmology is distinguished from religion in its less tradition-bound construction and reliance on modern "intellectual understanding" rather than faith, and from philosophy in its emphasis on spirituality as a formative concept.

  12. That's not the first time Schilling's been involved in one of those... he had a no-hitter working in San Diego when he was with the Dbacks (I forget which year) and the Padres' catcher put down a bunt that NObody expected, so he got the single. Brenly called it chicken-sNit (with an H), but what can you do. Nobody bobbled the ball, however... and the Dbacks still won that game.

  13. Well, there was a ruling controversy today, and this is now the third time I've seen one man's decision, or play, spoil a no-hitter or a perfect game for a pitcher...The first was way back in about 1970, when with two outs and a 3-2 count on on the 27th batter, the ump called ball 'four' on a borderline pitch, spoiling Milt Pappas' perfect game...He ended up getting the next guy out to complete his no-hitter...Back in the eighties, I was at A WhiteSox game with Lamar Hoyt on the mound against the Yankees on a cold misty May night game at Comiskey Park...Hoyt had been perfect until the seventh--never even reaching ball three on a batter, when a Yankee hit a popup to short left field...In the swirling wind, Ozzie Guillen went out after the ball, then ran in, then left, then right, and the ball finally dropped right where he was standing when the ball was pitched---but he couldn't reach it, and thus, it was ruled a single...The very next pitch, the Yankee batter hit a come-backer to Hoyt, who started a double play to end the inning, and that was the end of the Yankee baserunning for the night...

Sunday, the official scorer's ruling on C. C. Sabbathia's drop on Adam LaRoche's swinging bunt was ruled a hit, and the Brewer's are trying to get the call reversed and award Sabbathia a no-hitter...Personally, I think the official scorer made a bad ruling, but he is the official scorer and he did make the ruling and I think it should stand...The rest of the game would have perhaps played out differently, knowing there was a no-hitter on the line...

Oh come on Simon... you and I have talked about this kind of thing before. Pitchers are typically given the benefit of the doubt in fielding decisions like that... from a fielding perspective that is... it makes perfect sense to me why it should have been ruled a hit.

And Sabathia is okay with the ruling... it's Ned Yost that was whining about it... and Joe Morgan and Jon Miller complained about it several times...

It was a hit as far as I'm concerned.

yeah... there's got to be some sort of review process... one of the Ray's pitchers, I think it was Matt Garza, carried a no hitter into the seventh (I think) and the center fielder ran in to make the catch, got there in time and the ball bounced off the side of his glove... it was a tough play, but he had an easy chance to make it... the OFFICIAL scorer ruled it a hit... Garza was furious... a little later another stRanger got a hit but who knows what would have happened? we were told that you can only appeal to the scorer who made the ruling and it stops with him/her...

With the CF the official scorer has more of a judgment call... however, the pitcher getting bent out of shape about it probably wasn't his best move, especially if it took him a while to regain his composure.

  14. My new job....forgot to tell you...I am teaching in a residential substance abuse facility for adolescent females ages 13 - 21. It will also be where I will do my internship for my masters in mental health counseling. (you have to go through all these sessions and clearances yourself before being able to work with these girls....counseling, lots of counseling and all kinds of drug and alcohol screenings.....it's great!!!! They even caught Listerine on one of the girls in my new employee orientation group....though I think they were just teasing her....) It is more than four times the money I was making at the job I started in September of last year and the people I work with are fantastic. (I no longer have to hide how twisted I am.) <evil grin>

I love the girls.....they have some impulse control issues, some boundary issues, and lots of problems knowing what to do with anger....but I wouldn't be doing anything else even if it paid ten times what I am now making.

Most days so far have been good....challenging, but good....there was a day when one of our girls tried to run...that was kind of intense...took over two hours to get her back in the program at an emotionally functional level.

Bless your heart (and your physical and emotional health all around)! If you can do that without getting burned out, you will add sooooooooo much to the world and to the lives of those girls.

Volunteering at the child crisis shelter, for me is tremendously rewarding... but I only can take one day a week and that's with preschoolers... teen girls are as challenging as life gets.

Bless you, bless you, bless you!!!

    and bless you again.

and btw, what you alluded to at the start of your post (the one this afternoon) is ALSO a key coping mechanism for dealing with stress!!! And don't you forget it! :)

  15. Today around 11 a.m. I went grocery shopping and the young teen who was bagging my groceries was really sad.

So I asked her about what was the matter, etc.

Last night around midnight she lost $100. It fell out of her pocket. So I asked her where this happened, etc., and she told me she thinks it was at or by this park. (When she realized, she couldn't go look because she had to get to work at the store.)

So I told her I would go look. I went to the park -- nothing. But then I decided to walk along a few different streets that led away from the park because I knew she had walked away from the park and also there was a breeze.

Guess what! I found her money -- five $20 bills folded up -- on the street. I brought it back to her at the store. She was so happy. That's a lot of money for that kid and she worked so hard for it.

Happy ending. Made my day! :)

    :eusa_clap::eusa_clap::eusa_clap:

    Made YOUR day?

That little gal will remember this ALL of her life!

  16. Just browsing the assorted responses here, it becomes clear that, like anything else, different things work for different people.

I have a VERY, VERY big yard and mowing does it for me. Whether I'm riding, pushing, using my old manual push mower or pulling my brush hog, I "get it all out" while mowing...or most any kind of yard/outdoor work. My maintained yard has gone from 1/3 acre to a full three acres from reading the posts in the "About The Way" forum and learning all the stuff that was REALLY going on in TWI while I was happily, vapidly and unknowingly saying "God Bless you" and praising the virtues of VPW and his "class" to others back in the day.

Thanks Paw, Groucho, DWBH et al! You guys have opened my eyes. SERIOUSLY!

Working out with weights is also very effective for me. I've gone from 30 curls at 50 lbs to 200 curls at 90 lbs per day just from reading Rocky's posts in the politics forum.

Thanks, Rocky!! Maybe this election year, they'll suspend the election and let you and me arm wrestle to decide the next POTUS. Ya think?

My third favorite is target practice with firearms. I mostly use my muzzleloader for that because it's loud and belches a lot of flame and smoke, is great catharsis and relatively inepensive to play with.

That's reserved for special occasions like when I do a job and have a hard time getting paid.

Glad to be of service... you and I are sooooooo alike in many ways... :biglaugh:
